Men’s basketball can’t complete comeback, topped by Hatters

The Lipscomb men’s basketball team lost to the Stetson Hatters 77-71 Thursday night in an aggressive, defense-heavy battle at Allen Arena, the home of the Bisons.  A key player for the Bisons was freshman guard Will Pruitt who hails from Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. He scored his career-high with 22 points, knocking in multiple clutch shots for Lipscomb while also taking down 6 rebounds. Pruitt spent 33 minutes on the court, making 7-12 of his shots.  “I didn’t think it was gonna be a career night,” Will Pruitt said in a post-game interview, regarding his career-high that took place in the game against the Hatters.  Ahsan Asadullah, an Atlanta-born junior center, made a total of 13 points for the team in the 33 minutes he played. Right behind him in scoring at 12 points was freshman shooting guard Trae Benham. There was a great atmosphere from the students who attended to represent their social clubs. To start the game, Stetson won the tipoff and got the first two points within 15 seconds. The Bisons and Hatters both excelled on the defensive end, getting up in each other’s space. Asadullah pulled through on multiple occasions with slick and creative ways to get around players and pull down rebounds. The offense started off well for the Bisons, leading 16-15 with 12:15 on the clock.  After that, it went downhill for the home team. The Hatters went on an 11-point streak, putting them ten points ahead of the Bisons at 26-16. Four of those points were made by Stetson’s Aubin Gateretse, a freshman center from Charleroi, Belgium. With only playing on the court...
Dr. Jan Harris releases poetry book on life, love and the end of the world

Dr. Jan Harris releases poetry book on life, love and the end of the world

Lipscomb’s very own associate professor, Dr. Jan Harris, released a book of poetry last fall titled “Isolating One’s Priority in a Time of Crisis“. With themes of love in the time of disaster, Harris’s free-verse poetry book covers the subject of life after the end of the world. That made me curious to see who Dr. Harris was and what her process was to create such art and where inspiration comes from.  “I think for me inspiration comes in a lot of ways,” Dr. Harris said. “It’s really language. I start with a phrase or maybe an image that I want to return to and try to form words around it. Thinking about a topic and idea and trying to find an image that allows the expression of that in a way that creates space for a lot of people to engage.” Harris stresses the importance of making sure the poem was able to let the audiences’ experiences find the emotional center of the poem no matter what their experience was. Dr. Harris said, “That’s where it’s different than fiction since you need to give it an emotional resonance with your audience.” Dr. Harris has been writing most of her life. When she was an undergrad there wasn’t a creative writing program, but she did participate in the school magazine in which she published some poetry. Though she graduated grad school with an unrelated degree, she always felt drawn back to writing and poetry.  “Like most people who are writers, I kept trying to do things more practical,” Dr. Harris said, before telling me she went back into writing...

Men’s basketball weathers unexpected challenge, staves off one-win Bulldogs at home

The Lipscomb men’s basketball team won to the Alabama A&M’s Bulldogs 66-63 Thursday night in a close whiplash of a battle at Allen Arena, home of the Bisons. A principal player for the night was freshman forward Jacob Ognacevic, spending 29 minutes on the court and making 16 points for the Bisons. Not only did he lead the team in points, but he also lead them in rebounds, producing 8 of them.  Sophomore guard KJ Johnson made 12 points for the Bisons, including 6-7 free throw shooting at crucial times in the game. Freshman guard Will Pruitt got 7 rebounds as well as made 3-4 three-pointers, gathering a total of 11 points for the team. A highlight of the night was seeing junior center Ahsan Asadullah join the court for the first time since his injury, playing a total of 17 minutes. Atlanta-born Asadullah stepped onto the court for the first time in over a month due to his leg injury, getting cheers from the sidelines and spectators, especially when he scored his first 7 points for the team since November.  Alabama A&M led off with the ball, but it was quickly turned over to Lipscomb and back again to the Bulldogs in which EJ Williams scored the first two points for Alabama with a layup.  Johnson missed an attempt to respond, and freshman point guard Will Pruitt made a jumper on an offensive rebound, bringing them even with Alabama A&M early. Pruitt added a 3-pointer on the next possession, but the Bulldogs quickly pulled a 3-pointer back thanks to Garrett Hicks, who led the visitors with 19 points....
Bisons fall one point short of late-game comeback, lose to Tigers

Bisons fall one point short of late-game comeback, lose to Tigers

The Lipscomb women’s basketball team suffered an agonizing loss to the Tennessee State Tigers 50-49 Wednesday night at Allen Arena. Sophomore guard Blythe Pearson scored 20 points for the Bisons, adding 7 rebounds as well. Pearson went 7-11 from the field, shooting 64%.  Senior center Dorie Harrison added 11 points for Lipscomb. The Kentucky transfer pulled down 16 rebounds, a season high.  “Honestly, we kinda got rattled by the press,” assistant coach Colsten Thompson said. “They’re super athletic with a type of defense we haven’t really seen yet.”  The first quarter was a close battle on the court, both teams swinging back and forth with baskets, ending at 8-8. Cook led off with 4 points for the team, Collier and Hemphill both adding two for the team. Defense played fantastically on both teams, putting up a fight for anyone to make an easy shot.  In the second quarter the Bisons fell behind at 15-14, Tennessee State making a big run at the start, but Lipscomb pulled ahead making a series of shots to catch up. Harrison made 6 of the 14 shots for the Bisons, Vinson coming in second with five for her team, Pearson making three points. Static energy enveloped the court as our team was one point behind at 23-22 for halftime.  “Once we got settled into the rhythm coming out into the second half, we were able to kinda get going defensively a bit,” Thompson said.  Starting off with a three-pointer, Pearson made another and ended with a three-pointer, giving her team 9 points in the third quarter. Jordan Peete blew out her shoes, needing a...
