Students experienced yet another day off from school due to inclement weather after having the Friday before off due to winter weather and yesterday off due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day. In The Gathering today, SGA President Carson Panovec announced that classes after 3 p.m. were officially cancelled, and classes before 10 a.m. on Wednesday morning were also cancelled. To enjoy the snow day, students and people from surrounding neighborhoods used makeshift sleds to slide down the hill of the Lipscomb soccer field....

Friends, family, students and alumni gathered in front of Lipscomb’s bell tower to usher in the Christmas spirit at this year’s Lighting of the Green Tuesday night. Spectators traveled from near and far to witness the annual festivities. Some students simply left their dorms; other families drove across the state. Former Bison Riley Adkisson’s family traveled from St. Louis, Missouri, to come watch Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith perform alongside Lipscomb’s choirs. “My family drove for five hours for this,” Adkisson said while looking for them through the crowd. Upon arrival, guests were greeted with twinkling lights and free hot chocolate. On the upper level of the Allen Arena parking garage, clips from family-favorite Christmas movies played in the background while visitors “ice skated.” The holiday concert kicked off at 5:30 p.m. with a performance from Lipscomb Academy’s elementary choir, followed by Grant and Smith, who sang both original and traditional Christmas carols. One of Grant’s originals included, “To Be Together,” a song she wrote about the presence of loved ones during the winter season. “It’s a song about being together, which is what matters most,” Grant said. “As I get older, I realize that’s what it’s all about.” Grant and Smith stopped in Nashville mid-tour. “We’re going to 19 different cities,” Grant said, “but now we’re at Lipscomb!” Other performances took place from winner of season nine of The Voice, Jordan Smith to Lipscomb University’s student choir. The audience sang “Silent Night” as the final song of the evening. Tuesday night outside Allen Arena, artists in the Christian and gospel genre gathered in celebration of their work. The red carpet for the annual GMA Dove Awards started at 3:30 p.m., and by 6:00 p.m., all gathered had seen filmmakers and musicians, including headlining artist Reba McEntire. In response to President Trump’s announced plan to phase out the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), Lipscomb University’s Office of Intercultural Development believed it necessary to confront the controversy. In Thursday’s Multicultural Awareness, Skills and Knowledge, or MASK, chapel, Assistant Dean of Intercultural Development, Lisa Steele, addressed the overwhelming audience in Ezell Chapel. “DREAMers,” she said, referring to the student-recipients of DACA, “are just like you. They’re fellow human beings.” She went on to explain what DACA is and some of its limitations. DACA is an immigration policy brought forth by the Obama administration that grants children of undocumented immigrants the opportunity to pursue an education, free from the fear of deportation. It grants recipients protection, temporary licenses and social security cards so that the students can drive and hold down jobs. “They still have to pay taxes,” Steele said, confronting a common misconception. “Many people ask, ‘Why don’t they just apply for citizenship,'” Steele said. “They would love to, but there is no path to get there through DACA.” There are currently 800,000 DREAMers in the United States. Steele passed the microphone to some DREAMers enrolled at Lipscomb University in hopes that hearing their stories would help the campus sympathize. “When you put a face to a story,” she said, “it changes everything. DREAMers are some of the bravest and most courageous students I know.” One such student is Juan Gonzalez. Gonzalez is currently enrolled in his fifth year at Lipscomb University.
