Ostrom begins training for U.S. Collegiate National Volleyball Team

Incoming senior volleyball player Kayla Ostrom begins training and competing this week for the 2016 U.S. Collegiate National Team – Indianapolis program June 21-30 in Indianapolis. In February, Ostrom attended the USAV Women’s National Team Open Tryout in Colorado Springs at the Olympic Training Center and made the team — one of only 36 women chosen. The program will be divided into three teams, each consisting of 12-players. Those teams, chosen during training, will compete in a round-robin tournament June 26-29 at the USA Volleyball Girl’s National Championships. It will serve as a second tryout for the USA National Team. This is the same tryout that Lipscomb volleyball alumni Jewell Dobson and Lauren Ford attended two years before. Ostrom was presented with the opportunity over winter break by head coach Brandon Rosenthal. “I was on the fence about going, but after talking with many people and praying for direction, I decided to go. I am so thankful I did,” Ostrom said.  Ostrom flew out to Denver for the tryout with Associate Head Coach Billy Ebel, who was working the tryout. After they landed, they hopped in a car and drove to Colorado Springs for the first session the same afternoon.  “Playing with girls from all over the country was way more fun than I expected. There was so much positive energy in the gym. Everyone brought their best effort,” Ostrom said. She said the drills were sometimes crazy; setting 6’5’’middles was a little tricky at first, but she said that, overall, competing in the drills was freeing and exhilarating.  She added that she approached the weekend with the mindset that she was going to have...
New ‘fast-casual’ restaurant led by Lipscomb alumnus

New ‘fast-casual’ restaurant led by Lipscomb alumnus

Located on 8th Avenue South, The Hook is a fast-casual restaurant, providing customers with chicken, seafood and more. The Reed family (Colin Reed, Brenda Reed, Ed Reed and Sam Reed), who is the owner of the Nashville fine-dining restaurant Sinema, started the latest restaurant concept of “fast-casual” dining. The Reed family’s newest restaurant, The Hook, has also embraced this dining concept.   The manager of The Hook is Jesse Fraser, a Lipscomb alumnus who graduated with a mass communication degree. Fraser said the degree has really helped him excel in the restaurant business. “I am definitely communicating with the masses in this industry.”   Fraser said some of his favorite memories during his years at Lipscomb come from times with his brothers in the social club Delta Tau. “We formed amazing friendships that still last to this day,” said Fraser. “Bowling with other social clubs, formals, intramural football games, throwing water balloons at people coming out of the library, BBQs at the pool, playing Goldeneye on the Nintendo 64 till all hours of the morning; these are just a handful of the amazing times we shared.” After graduating from Lipscomb, Fraser worked with talented chefs such as Neal Fraser (no relation), John Besh, Alon Shava and the Boka Group. Fraser has dabbled in careers other than the food industry, though. He said his most rewarding job was when he was a teacher to Autistic kindergarten students in Los Angeles. After a decade of working in various areas, he decided it was time to go back home to Nashville. Fraser bartended at Sinema for a couple of years and said he loved working with the Reed family so...

Lipscomb baseball loses 4-3 to WKU

The Lipscomb baseball team lost 4-3 against Western Kentucky University Tuesday night at Ken Dugan Field. It was a back and forth game, but runners left on base and hitting mistakes late in the game cost Lipscomb the win. The Hilltoppers scored early in the second inning starting off with a double from Steven Kraft. A fake bunt from Harrison Scanlon moved Kraft to third, before Paul Murray hit a flair single to right field to score Kraft. The Bisons gained momentum in the bottom of the third inning on Lee Solomon’s solo homerun. In the top of the sixth inning, a single by Western Kentucky’s Kraft turned into what would be déjà vu for Lipscomb. Scanlon hit a double to right field, and Murray followed up with a two-run RBI single, making it 4-3. Lipscomb made seven pitching changes throughout the night making Western Kentucky unable to get comfortable in the seventh through the ninth innings. “If you look at how they scored and how we scored, they had three hits after two quick outs to score in the sixth, and we left men in scoring position with opportunities,” head coach Jeff Forehand said. The pitching staff combined allowed one walk and had eight strike outs. “Defensively, that’s the kind of game we are looking for,” Solomon said. “We had some good plays — we just have to execute, get counts and put people away. We can’t leave pitches over the plate. I think that’s what really hurt us tonight.” The Bisons fall 20-21 on the season. Michael Gigliotti is still out with a hand injury and will not...

Lipscomb baseball team beats Middle Tennessee 6-1

Despite the two hour and forty minute weather delay, the Lipscomb baseball team picked up a 6-1 victory over Middle Tennessee State University on Tuesday night at Ken Dugan field. Freshman Adam Stewart from Homewood, Alabama made his first career start Tuesday night. Stewart pitched five innings and struck out seven batters. He allowed four hits, two walks and one run. “For Stewart’s first start as a freshman, I just can’t be more proud of him,” head coach Jeff Forehand said. “He commanded the game from the start and it was just fun to watch.” Middle Tennessee’s Jack Wyrick started on the mound for the Raider’s. Wyrick struck out six out of the first seven batters. The Bisons got on the board in the bottom of the third, after two walks. Freshman Von Watson hit a single up the middle to score two. Watson finished the night leading the Bisons 2-4 with three RBIs. “Von is getting pitched pretty tough and MTSU’s guy today was pretty good to start off,” Forehand said. “To get that big hit right there with two outs to break the ice in the scoring, it put us in a spot where we can breathe a little bit and Stewart can get into his rhythm.” In the top of the fifth, Middle Tennessee rallied with a double scored by Chaz Vesser, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Bisons. “We had a mistake on the double where we threw a ball wide into the dugout that cost us a run, but just a solid start for Stewart’s first outing.” Forehand said. Freshman Tevin Symonette scored in the bottom...

Men’s basketball loses to Atlantic Sun newcomer NJIT

The Lipscomb men’s basketball team fell 90-78 to NJIT Monday night in Allen Arena. NJIT pressed a hard defense and relied on sinking three-point shots. “The reason they were 16-of-29 is because we allowed them to get clean looks and they got in rhythm,” head coach Casey Alexander said. The Highlanders caused the Bisons to reach a season high of 23 turnovers. Throughout the night, senior David Wishon scored a team high of 24 points. Joining Wishon in the double digits was junior J.C. Hampton with 18 points, sophomore George Brammeier with 12 points and sophomore Nathan Moran with 11 points. “NJIT took our three-point shooters away and they just let us throw it in there [down low],” Alexander said. “Thankfully, our guys had nice games.” The Highlanders were led by Damon Lynn, who scored 26 points and added five assists. The Bisons’ next game will be at 1 p.m. Saturday against USC Upstate. Photo courtesy of Lipscomb...
