Lipscomb alumni made their way back to campus for Tau Phi’s 35th annual Cowboy Show on Saturday night. This year’s show was a reunion of current and former social club members to put on an entertaining performance. Tau Phi senior Jesse Taylor said they wanted to get everyone involved to create a fun atmosphere. “We wanted to bring back all the tradition and everything everybody has experienced in the past,” Taylor said. While members of Tau Phi headlined the show, many female social clubs participated in the show as well. Pi Delta senior Anna Claire Temple was pleased with the energy in Collins. “We had connections with the alumni and older people who were in the crowd, so I thought that helped a lot,” Temple said. The show featured a live band, choreographed dances, covers of popular country songs and original performances from students. It’s rare that a “villain” crosses over to the good side; however, for one Lipscomb student, the choice was easy. Chad Lang is a recent graduate of Belmont University, and was also on the Bruin basketball team. With another year of NCAA eligibility left, Lang decided to transfer to Lipscomb to play ball and work on his Master’s in Management (Entrepreneurship). Standing 6’11”, Lang is a perfect fit for the Bisons, who were in need of some size in the low-post. “I’ve known Casey [Alexander] since I was 17, and the graduate program was a perfect fit for what I want to do,” he said. “I can work, play and get my master’s.” Coach Alexander recruited Lang out of high school while he was an assistant at Belmont. “While this is a new team, basketball spirits are high, and there’s great team chemistry, Lang added. “So it’s been a great transition from where I was, to where I am now.” Coming from Belmont, Lang is no stranger to winning. He was a part of teams that won four conference championships and made three NCAA Tournament appearances. “More than anything, I think I bring leadership and experience,” Lang said. “I already know what to expect from Coach Alexander and what it takes to win a championship.” Lang admits that it took some time getting used to being at this end of the Boulevard, but everybody has been welcoming. “At first, it was kinda weird being over here, but everybody has been very friendly,” he said. The Lady Bisons volleyball team struggled to keep pace with the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in their home opener, resulting in a three-set loss. After a slow start, the Purple and Gold showed some promise in the last two sets, but ultimately it was not enough to overcome. The loss ended the Lady Bisons six-game winning streak. Head coach Brandon Rosenthal was disappointed with his team’s lack of focus and passion. “I didn’t think we came with that same drive and passion,” Rosenthal said. “I felt like tonight we were trying to manufacture it (energy), instead of it coming from the heart.” While Rosenthal was not happy with the playing of his team, he did recognize the strong play from the Hilltoppers. “More than anything, it’s a matter of playing our brand of volleyball, we didn’t do that tonight,” Rosenthal added. “A lot of that had to do with what Western Kentucky did.” Western Kentucky blitzed Lipscomb in the first set, 25 to 11, then went on to take the final two sets, 25 to 20. “Western Kentucky is a good team,” Rosenthal said. “They played some disciplined volleyball and unfortunately we paid for it.” Already without middle blocker Jewell Dobson, LUV was also without libero Bri McCombs. McCombs was a game-time decision. “Any time you are filling in for multiple players it makes it tough,” Rosenthal said. “But by the same token it gives other players opportunities.” The Lady Bisons return to Allen Arena this weekend to host the Lipscomb Invitational. With temperatures threatening triple-digits and thunderstorms in the forecast, Lipscomb students still came out to participate in the annual kickball tournament on Saturday. SAC intramural graduate assistant Kyle Erickson was very pleased with the attendance despite the extreme conditions. “It’s been a great day so far, we’ve had a pretty good turnout. It’s been hot, but it’s been a lot of fun,” Erickson said. The first pitch was delayed after the tournament had to be moved from the intramural fields to Draper Diamond due to the field conditions. Eight teams competed in the single-elimination format with one winner being declared in the end. The tournament featured a dunk tank (which was very beneficial considering the heat), hot dogs and hamburgers, and many laughs to go along. Freshman Danny Marsh enjoyed his first kickball experience, and was very optimistic about his team’s chances. “We’re going in with high hopes, coming back with this championship team from last year. We have huge expectations, and we’re looking for good results,” Marsh said. Participants did admit that the humidity did have some effect on them, and it was crucial to stay hydrated. “I definitely think it’s going to take a bit of a toll on us, but I think these boys are ready to push through,” Marsh said. In what was the second meeting between the teams this season, the Lipscomb softball team split in their doubleheader with UAB on Wednesday at Draper Diamond. In the first game, the Purple and Gold used its defense to propel them to a 2-1 victory. Sophomore Brittany Elmore drove in the two runs on a walk-off double in the first game. However, in the second game, they struggled to keep the Blazers off the base, resulting in a 5-3 loss. “Getting the win the first game was huge for us,” Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. “Obviously, we wanted the sweep…we thought we had a chance to win it, but UAB did a really great job of coming back with two runs late.” The Lady Bisons came into the contest ranked 35th in the nation and with a record of 28-8, so, on paper, they are the better team, but UAB, a member of the Conference USA, has had the upper-hand in the series since the “rivalry” began in 2010. The Lady Bisons defeated the Blazers 9-5 in February during the Getterman Classic in Waco, Texas. To Lipscomb’s credit, they earned the Atlantic Sun’s 24th win against a 2013 NCAA Tournament team with the win. Coming off weekend losses to conference rival USC Upstate, the Lady Bisons wanted to regain some of their confidence against UAB. “I thought we played well, and we attacked the ball better than we did last weekend,” Ryman said. “That was good to see.” Coach Ryman gave a lot of credit to the team’s pitching for its win in the first game and added if they had kept...
