Lipscomb baseball sweeps Alabama A&M in weekend series

The Lipscomb baseball team defeated Alabama A&M 5-4, 14-5 and 10-3 to extend record to 9-3 for the season. In the first game, the Bisons defeated the Bulldogs 5-4. The Bulldogs were down 5-1 going into the ninth and scored three consecutive runs at the top of the inning. Junior Dalton Curtis stopped the rally to pick up his fourth save of the season. The Bisons beat the Bulldogs 14-5 in the second game and a grand slam from freshman Tevin Symonette was part of a six run streak during the third inning. This was the second homerun in two games for Symonette. “He works hard at take advantage of good pitches to hit at the plate,” head baseball coach Jeff Forehand. “I don’t think he intentionally goes up to the plate looking for a homerun, but he has put some good swings at the plate, which has led to being able to hit the ball over the wall.” Lipscomb continued its scoring streak by earning ten runs in the final game and winning 10-3. “I think it is always a combination of being good at bat and getting the count in your favor,” Forehand said. “We were able to take advantage of some opportunities, but I felt like we missed out on some others.” For sophomore pitcher Brady Puckett, this was his third win of the season. Puckett is tied with sophomore Jeffrey Passantino for most wins scored by a starting pitcher. “I think the key for him has been the eight strikeouts and no walks,” Forehand said. “When you are not walking guys, you give yourself the opportunity to have a lot of success.”...

Lipscomb men’s basketball falls in A-Sun semifinal 96-75

The Lipscomb men’s basketball team fell in Atlantic Sun semifinal 96-75 to Stetson Thursday night in Allen Arena. The Bisons had trouble from the free throw line in the first half, as they shot 33 percent from the field. The leading scorer for Lipscomb in the first half was sophomore George Brammeier with nine points. Freshman Garrison Mathews lead all scorers with 27 points — a career high for him on the year. “I went through a six or seven game slump were it was just hard for me to make three pointers, but thanks to my coaches I was able to break out of it this season,” Mathews said. “I cannot wait to get back and continue to get some work on my three-point shot in the offseason.” Stetson had an impressive shooting display, scoring 44 points in the first half. The leading scorer for the Hatters in the first half was Derick Newton with 12 points. Newton finished with 25 points, which led Stetson for the entire game. Newton was one of four players in double figures for the Hatters. Stetson finished the game as a team scoring 96 points. “We did not have a great game,” said Casey Alexander, Lipscomb men’s head basketball coach. “I have to give credit to Stetson, though — they played a lot better than we did tonight. We never got in a defensive rhythm and they were able to take advantage of it.” Lipscomb finished the season at 12-21 with a 7-7 record in the conference. “I am a little disappointed the way we played this season,” Alexander said. “I feel like this...
Mule Mix Classic gives Forehand 250th win as baseball head coach

Mule Mix Classic gives Forehand 250th win as baseball head coach

Coach Jeff Forehand has set numerous records during his 10 seasons as baseball head coach and this weekend he added another record to his list. After defeating Western Michigan 1-0 in the final game of the Mule Mix Classic, Forehand received his 250th win as head coach. “This win is a tribute to all the players that have played baseball since I have been here,” Forehand said. “I am just glad that I can be a part of that success.” Lipscomb swept the three-game tournament 13-6, 8-6 and 1-0 to extend their record to 5-2 for the season. In the first game, Lipscomb defeated Miami-Ohio 13-6. Lipscomb’s biggest hit of the game came on a grand slam by freshman Zeke Dodson. “That was fun to watch. I think the reason he got the grand slam was his patience at the plate,” Forehand said. “He was able to get a 3-1 count and get a fastball that he liked and put it over the left field wall.” In the second game, the Bisons defeated Army West Point 8-6. The Black Knights scored four runs in the sixth inning, but the Bisons had a strong relief performance that gave them the win. Sophomore Jeffrey Passantino picked up his second win of the season in the game against Army West Point. The last game of the Mule Mix Classic was a low scoring game as the Bisons defeated Western Michigan 1-0. Sophomore Brady Puckett pitched seven innings, giving up no runs to record his second win of the year. “I started out trying to find the zone early,” Puckett said. “I threw mostly hard stuff...
Men’s basketball prepares for playoff tournament line-up

Men’s basketball prepares for playoff tournament line-up

The Bisons sit at fifth place in the Atlantic Sun conference, having won seven of the last 10 games. If the team defeats Kennesaw State on Thursday, and if North Florida beats Jacksonville on Thursday, the Bisons will be guaranteed a top four seed in the playoffs, possibly being seeded as the number two team in the tournament. The Atlantic Sun men’s basketball tournament features a new format this year. The top four seeds in the conference will host the first round of the tournament at their respective gymnasium. The top two seeds of each round will host a round in the tournament as well. Because of this, Lipscomb could possibly host more than one playoff round at home. In the event of a tie, there are four ways to determine which team advances in the tournament, according to Atlantic Sun representative Patrick McCoy. First, the season record of all teams involved will be weighed against one another. The win/loss record between the two teams would determine which team moves on. Second, the winning percentage of all teams involved will be taken under advisement. The team with the highest winning percentage would receive the highest seed placement. Third, if the seeds are not determined by one of the preceding two tie-breakers, all tied teams will compare winning percentages against the highest seeded team that is not part of the tie. In this case, all teams would compare win/loss records with the number one seeded team, North Florida. If the first three possible tie-breakers fail to select the seed placement, the ratings power index (RPI) of each team will be taken into consideration. This is a ranking system based on a team’s...

Women’s basketball earns first A-Sun victory against NJIT

The Lady Bisons defeated NJIT 63-49 Wednesday night in Allen Arena, ending a 17-game losing streak with the return of senior Ashley Southern after an injury. “I think it was good for our team that they worked so hard and have done all the little things to make this win possible,” head basketball coach Greg Brown said. “They have shown so much improvement individually, it just hasn’t manifested itself to wins. It is great for our team to be rewarded for their hard work.” Lipscomb out-rebounded NJIT 40-30 and forced 15 turnovers. “We did a great job staying in front of the ball,” Brown said. “I think we did a great job rebounding the ball.  It was a huge key for us in the game. It was also important that we scored 22 points off of turnovers.” Southern led the Bisons with 18 points and nine rebounds. “I think she was able to stay in the game mentally during rehab,” Brown said. “She was able to get a little work in last week. Being a senior she was able to play with a sense of urgency.” Lipscomb’s bench outscored NJIT 26-14. One of the big contributions from the bench other than Southern came from sophomore Riley Northway with eight points. Lipscomb will take on North Florida on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in Allen Arena. “I will be looking for consistency from our team when we take on North Florida,” Brown said. “So far we have done that throughout the year. We will look to continue to develop and get more used to having Ashley Southern back. We also need to keep...
