Sanderson, Bisons set for rematch at Mercer

The Bisons opening round matchup in the A-Sun tournament is a familiar one– the host team, the Mercer Bears. Mercer comes off a season finale win over the Bisons 68-67, but the Bisons got the better of Mercer on Dec. 4 in Allen Arena with a 77-65 win. Each team won the regular season matchup on their home court, but Coach Sanderson knows there is much more to winning than just home court advantage. “It’s more about us,” Sanderson said. “It’s not necessarily about Mercer, it’s more about what we do. I think we have won the last four times at Mercer besides our last game in which we were only beat by 1, so I think it’s more about what we do and how we prepare. “We just have to be more focused and know that we have been successful down [at Mercer] before.” Seniors Josh Slater and Adnan Hodzic get much of the attention from opposing teams, and rightfully so. Adnan leads the team in points per game (18) and rebounds (7.5). While Slater leads the team in assists per game (4.7) and is second in points per game (16.5). A big key to the game and tournament is balance. “We just need to be more balanced,” Sanderson said. “If those two guys (Hodzic and Slater) have career nights there is a chance we still may not win, so we have to have balance throughout our roster. We have to have everyone step up and do the things we ask them to do, both offensively and defensively, to take the pressure off of Adnan and Josh as...

Bisons drop season opener to Dayton 8-3

The much anticipated baseball season got underway on Friday at Ken Dugan field as the Dayton Flyers took on the Lipscomb Bisons. Vanderbilt transfer Richie Goodenow got the start for the Bisons but was overshadowed by Flyers pitcher Michael Hauschild. Hauschild pitched a complete game for the Flyers while giving up 8 hits, 3 runs and striking out 8 Bison batters. The Bisons struck first in the bottom of the first inning after Tennyson Dodd reached base off an errant throw. One batter later, Josh Chism singled to right field to bring Dodd home for the 1-0 Bison lead. The Flyers shook off the rust in the top of the second when Zach Stewart singled to right field followed by a Mike Coughlin single that defelcted off of Bison pitcher Goodenow’s foot. Robby Sunderman followed his teammates with a single to left field that loaded the bases. A base clearing double to straight-away center by Bobby Glover was just what the Flyers needed to get the ball rolling. Up 3-1, the Flyers never looked back. The Bisons struggled to get back on the board until the bottom of the sixth when Ricky Coleman hit a two run homer to tie the game 3-3. Senior Chad Fromm relieved Goodenow in the seventh inning. Fromm walked Sunderman to start the inning followed by an Ian Hundley double to right center. Bobby Glover sent Sunderman home off of a sacrifice ground out to put the Flyers back on top 4-3. With seven homeruns his junior year, Castine got off to a good start against the Bisons. In the top of the eighth...

Superstitious students prepare to perform rituals during Super Bowl XLV

The Packers and Steelers are two of the most storied franchises in all of football. On Sunday the teams will meet for the biggest prize in the NFL, and the right to say their team is the best. The Packers haven’t won the Super Bowl since 1996. On the other side of the ball, the Steelers are familiar with the big stage and were crowned world champions twice during the last decade. Aaron Rodgers and the cheese heads come into the game as the sixth seed, but they didn’t mind that at all. They won three games on the road to claim their spot in Dallas, including a 48-21 trouncing of the number one seeded Atlanta Falcons. Big Ben and the Steelers had an easier road to Super Bowl XLV, and it’s not like they haven’t done it before. The Steelers had two wins at home, one against their division rivals the Ravens and the other against Rex Ryan’s Jets. Packers and Steelers fans began showing their teams colors on the Lipscomb campus this week in preparation for Sunday’s big matchup. For sophomore Ryan Nowers it’s a family affair. “My grandfather is from the North and has always been a big Packers fan,” Nowers said. “My dad became a Packers fan when he was younger because of my grandfather and I guess when I was born I just took it to a new level.” Lindsay Trucksis, sophomore vocal performance major from Cincinnati, Ohio, is certain who her favorite Packers player is. “Aaron Rodgers, because he’s better than Brett Favre,” Trucksis said. Annie Thompson, a junior and Pennsylvania native, has...

Baseball’s inter-squad battles set up drive for A-Sun glory

Only three weeks separate the Bisons from their first home game of the 2011 baseball season. But right now the Bisons are excited to take the field for inter-squad games. After weeks of workouts, the players are glad to get in some game-like hitting. “[The workouts] have been tough but they have been productive,” said Brett Teschner, a sophomore catcher. “We really spent a lot of time on what we needed to work on, and we have everyone in as good of season shape as we could with the weather we’ve had to deal with.” All the players were excited to see the throwing of Vanderbilt transfer Richie Goodenow, Connor Sinclair, Mike Grace, Ben Johnson and Chris Nunn during the first inter-squads. But looking from the other end of the battery, Teschner knows he’s in a battle for starting time behind the plate. Senior Matt Brewer, redshirt sophomore Bennett Smith and junior Logan Hostettler will be Teschner’s competition. “[As far as] the catching spot this year, no one has anything won,” Teschner said. “Any one of us can play at any moment. I just think now it will come down to who is the most consistent along with driving in runs and good, productive at bats.” Coach Jeff Forehand says the proof will come both behind the plate and with a bat. “All four of them do some good things,” Forehand said. “We want one guy but right now I can’t say that one guy has won the job. “Hostettler has been back there for a lot of innings. Teschner swings the bat with a lot of pop. Brewer...

Pitching takes backseat to hitting as Bisons defeat Eagles 10-8

The Bisons earned a hard fought victory over Florida Gulf Coast Friday night at Ken Dugan Field. The Bisons faced Florida Gulf Coast’s pitcher Chris Sale, who has been getting much attention from pro scouts after being named MVP of the Cape Cod League. Sale came into the game with a 5-0 record and a 1.41 ERA on the season, however, the Bisons were not intimidated. Senior Tyler Wilson was the early contributor for the Bisons with a single in the bottom of the first. Two batters later he would score on a Cory Hale sac fly that put the Bisons on top early 1-0. In the bottom of the third Wilson continued to lead the Bisons with a solo homerun that put the Bisons up 2-0. In the bottom of the fourth Zach Messer wanted in on some of the action as he homered over the left field fence to increase the Bisons lead to 3-0. Tyler Wilson continued his dominance with another base hit in the bottom of the fifth. He advanced to second base on an errant pitch by Sale, and then scored on a single by his brother Lee Wilson that put the Bisons up 4-0. Cory Hale, who also had a great night at bat going 2 for 3, singled to advance Wilson to third. Zach Messer then hit a triple that brought both Wilson and Hale across the plate. Messer would score on an errant pitch, and the Bisons ended the inning with the score 7-0. However, the Eagles did not come into the game with a 21-12 record for nothing. In the...
