Lady Bisons dominate Rhodes in final exhibition game

Coach Greg Brown and his team got a different outcome in their final exhibition game on Saturday than the one they had a week ago. Lipscomb’s women’s basketball team controlled the game from start to finish for a 83-45 drubbing of Rhodes college in Allen Arena. Lipscomb suffered an exhibition loss last week to Freed-Hardman, an NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) school, but the outcome was never doubted on Saturday. Brown helped the Lady Bisons improve during practice and noticed their advancement at the game. “There was a lot of excitement and enthusiasm about the things we have been working on in practice defensively,” Brown said after the win. “That’s what you’re looking for is to get carryover from the exhibition games to the next week at practice and then to the first game. I liked our positioning and our ball pressure was much better.” The Bisons used a balanced attack to overwhelm the Lynx, with five players scoring in double figures, led by point guard Loren Cagle who brought in 16 points for the Bisons. Alex Banks and Loshaveon Jones both scored 12 for Lipscomb, followed by Meredith Lovelady’s 11 and Laure Assena’s 10 points. “That’s how we recruit, and thats the depth that we’re looking for, and it shows that we’ve got unselfish players,” Brown said. Cagle was the picture of efficiency in the contest, shooting 6-7 from the floor, including a perfect 4-4 from the three-point line to go along with four rebounds and three assists. She was recently named on the Nancy Lieberman watch list, an award that goes to the nation’s top point guards who exhibit leadership,...

Historic World Series draws mixed opinions from Lipscomb students

The Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians have split the first two games in one of the most intriguing World Series match-ups in recent memory. The student body at Lipscomb has a range of differing predictions about the outcome, some coming from a hometown influence. Lee Solomon, a junior outfielder on the baseball team, is from Columbus, Ohio, and he has cheered for the Indians for most of his life. Solomon said that the Cleveland Cavaliers championship earlier this year gave fans new hope. “Everyone back home is super excited right now, especially with the Cavs starting their season back up,” Solomon said. “People have been super optimistic this whole year. Since the Cavs won their Championship, people don’t think there’s any way the Indians will lose.” Junior Erin Telfer is from the Chicago area and saw the celebrations of many friends through social media. “The night they (the Cubs) made it to the World Series, my Facebook feed was literally full of dads crying because they finally did it,” Telfer said. “I’m not really a baseball fan, but I’m definitely happy for the Cubs.” An unofficial poll of Lipscomb students as to which team would be victorious was virtually split, but some students were more confident in their picks than others. Sophomore Sy Taylor is a Nashville native but picked Chicago to win without hesitation. “I can just feel it,” Taylor said. “They haven’t won one in a while; it’s just their time.” The story-lines surrounding this year’s Fall Classic are endless, but here are a few to keep an eye on in the next week: 1. Cubs’ bats...

Volleyball shakes off slow start, sweeps NJIT

Lipscomb returned to its winning ways Friday night in Allen Arena by defeating NJIT in straight sets, but it wasn’t the performance coach Brandon Rosenthal was looking for. The Bisons needed a 6-0 run to sneak out a first-set win after falling behind 19-22. The second set also saw Lipscomb fall behind early before a 17-4 run to finish gave them an easy 25-16 win. The third set was never close as the Bisons cruised to a 25-13 victory to sweep the Highlanders, who are winless in conference play. “Unfortunately, it has been challenging for us this year to come out with more of a sense of urgency,” Rosenthal said after the win. “That’s just something we need to continue to get better at. There’s no doubt I was a little frustrated, but we found a way to get it done at the end of the (first) set. I wasn’t terribly pleased with the next set either. I liked what I saw in the third set.” Coach Rosenthal referenced some recent words from sophomore Jenny Phelan when talking about the Bisons. “Jenny said it best the other day saying that they (players) have to do more so that we can do less. They have to go out and execute and that is hard sometimes, but the difference between good and great teams is great teams find a way to make that happen. My message to the team was that we have to learn from these experiences throughout the year.” Chloe Rodgers led the Bisons with nine kills in the match, followed by Taylor Racich, who tallied eight kills. Lipscomb’s duo of...

Bisons start fast, cruise to victory against Bruins in ‘Battle of the Boulevard’

The men’s soccer squad scored a 4-2 victory against its school rivalry, Belmont, on Monday night in front of an energetic crowd at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Bisons and improved their record to 3-2-0 on the season. Although the annual “Battle of the Boulevard” match was highly anticipated, Coach Charles Morrow said he wanted to treat it just like any other game. “Getting back on the right side of things and putting in a good performance was most important,” Morrow said. “It’s not that we downplayed the rivalry because this game is always special, but tonight was more about us taking a step forward as a group and trying to get ready for conference play.” The Bisons struck early and often in the match. Freshman Javier Leija converted a header on a beautiful cross from sophomore Logan Paynter in the 12th minute, and Lipscomb extended the lead to 2-0 just one minute later when junior Ivan Sauko found the back of the net. Belmont seemed to be back in the game when the Bruins’ Stephen Bailey snuck a header in the top-left corner of the goal early in the second half, but Lipscomb quickly answered when senior Josue Chavez found senior Daniel Vieira, bringing in another goal for the Bisons in the 51st minute. Paynter then tacked on an insurance goal for the Bisons with a dart from the right-side in the 83rd minute. Belmont’s Elliot Jones added a score in the 87th minute, but it was too little too late for the Bruins. Lipscomb dominated in every facet of...

Lady Bisons defeat Wright State, remain undefeated at home

The Lipscomb women’s soccer team maintained its spotless home record on Sunday, earning a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Wright State, a member of the Horizon League. The win improved the Bisons’ record to 6-1-1 on the season, including a 4-0-1 home record. “Sunday games are always tough,” coach Kevin O’Brien said after the contest. “We’ve got girls that played 90 minutes on Friday and then 90 more today, so it was really gritty for us to get the win.” After a scoreless first 45 minutes, things quickly got exciting during the second half of play.  Lipscomb broke the 0-0 tie when sophomore Brooke Brenner’s shot found the back of the net in the 57th minute. Wright State’s Niki Romero answered with a goal of her own in the 80th minute, but the Bisons quickly took the permanent lead just two minutes later with a goal by sophomore Lindsay Brent, who was assisted by Emily Rogers. In a hectic final eight minutes, Lipscomb was able to hold the Raiders scoreless and hold the victory. “Wright St. was one overtime away from going to the NCAA tournament last season, and they had some really special players that were tough to cover,” O’Brien said. “I was especially proud of the way we rebounded so quickly after they tied the game. We didn’t hang our heads, and I think that says a lot about us as a team.” Lipscomb and Wright St. both had five shots on target in the match. Both teams put significant pressure on the opposing defenses, especially in the second half. The Bisons have a busy week on the soccer pitch as...
