‘Ready’ wins theme category, ‘Set’ wins music category in opening Singarama show

Though snow and ice scattered the ground, Lipscomb students glided across the stage in Singarama’s opening night.  The 52nd anniversary of Singarama kicked off in Collins Alumni Auditorium on Friday following a cancellation of Thursday’s original opening night. Because of the cancellation on Thursday, the teams, following the themes of “Ready,” “Set,” and “Go,” were judged in the categories of theme and music during the same night. The three shows were Ready or Not, directed by Anne Claire Smith, Back on Set, directed by Carolanne Deaton and Go For Your Dreams, directed by John Alex Foster. Ready or Not and Back on Set won the awards for best theme and best music respectively. Deaton said that Thursday’s cancellation actually helped the group. “We got more time to practice, so I think it got us better prepared for tonight,” Deaton said. Savannah Pickens, a member of the group Ready or Not, also explained that, at first, the cancellation was a “bummer,” but the group was able to work on small details of the show during the extra time. She also said that the crowd had more energy. “It ended up being good because the crowd had more energy tonight, and we did too,” Pickens said. The next show will be a matinee on Saturday at 2 p.m. followed by the final show at 7:30 p.m. Photo gallery by Erin...

Over 200 graduate at December 2014 ceremony

A new class of alumni took the first step into the next phase of their lives this Saturday in Allen Arena. Over 200 students graduated, including doctoral students, masters students and undergraduate students. Lipscomb president Randy Lowry spoke at the ceremony, sharing his hopes for each graduate’s future. “It’s your job to out into the world and take the sense of confidence and take the sense of character that has been developed here, and literally go change the world,” said Lowry. Lowry also spoke about the community Lipscomb alumni are a part of. Even now that they have graduated, Lowry hopes they will be a part of future projects. “We want you to realize that you will always be a part of the Bison herd,” said Lowry. Concluding the ceremony, Lipscomb’s alma mater was performed by Christon Carney, a member of the graduating class. A few Lumination staff members received their diplomas, including Kage Sanderson, Travis Byrd and former editors-in-cheif, Logan Butts and Cory Woodroof. Woodroof served as editor-in-chief for a year and a half, then passed the torch to Butts, who served from summer 2014 up until his graduation in December...

Lipscomb volleyball remains focused despite high expectations

Lipscomb Volleyball is set to begin a highly anticipated season, and the Lady Bisons, despite a high preseason ranking, are looking beyond the honor to focus on the bigger task at hand, as coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “For us, the end goal is a championship,” said Rosenthal, who is entering his twelfth season as head coach of the Lady Bisons. He mentioned that while being voted as the top team in the Atlantic Sun conference is quite the honor, it is simply an honor. Lipscomb is returning six of seven starters from last year, and of those players, Bri McCombs, Jewell Dobson and Lauren Ford all won preseason awards. McCombs earned preseason Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Year, Dobson was voted Atlantic Sun preseason Player of the Year and Ford received a place on the All-Conference team. The Lady Bisons will get an opportunity to cash in on the predictions, as they face four top 25 ranked teams during the season. Their schedule kicks off with back-to-back ranked opponents, Creighton and Kansas ranked 23 and 22 respectively, on the first day of the season. Matchups with no. 15 ranked Missouri and no. 19 ranked Kentucky will be happening on Sept. 5 and 19. When scheduling these matchups, Rosenthal is only thinking about one thing: winning. He has great confidence in the team and thinks highly of its capability. “We’re [playing top schools] because I feel like that’s the group that we’re in,” said Rosenthal. He also talked about the team being historically a “slower-starting team, so we’re always looking to buck the trend.” Slow start or no, Rosenthal...

SAB debuts new weekly event Tuesday Night Treats

Tuesday nights on Lipscomb’s campus have gotten tastier, as the Student Activities Board announced and has already held a new event called “Tuesday Night Treats”, or TNT. The event, as Director of Student Activities Louis Nelms said, is SAB’s weekly event, held every Tuesday night from nine to ten and will feature a variety of food choices.” Nelms said that SAB was looking for new ideas for the upcoming school year when someone mentioned hosting a weekly event. SAB looked at other weekly events hosted on campus: Coffeehouse, Wednesday Night We Eat, Wednesday Night Devo, and found something doable that hopefully, as Nelms mentioned, would not create as much conflict with other events on campus or in the area—thus Tuesday Night Treats. Nelms also said that the future is bright for TNT. He hopes to partner with others for the event, whether it be a social club promoting a fundraiser, a Lipscomb sports team promoting a game or a local church. Tuesday Night Treats will be in its second week on Aug. 26, and if you want to check out the menu ahead of time visit lipscombsab.com. Under the TNT events, the menu will be...
