Bison volleyball players Lauren Ford and Jewell Dobson attended the U.S. Olympic Volleyball tryouts late last month and came home with memories and important lessons. The two juniors were selected to represent Lipscomb at the tryout and said the atmosphere was almost unreal. “It really didn’t hit me; it really didn’t set in with me until I walked in,” middle blocker Jewell Dobson said. The women said the tryouts were fast-paced and constant. Each session was two hours and consisted mostly of drills. “The style of play was just different. It was very intense. We were always running around playing [volleyball], so in a way that was fast paced,” Dobson said. “It seemed surreal to us that we were playing with the best of the best,”outside hitter Ford added. Through those drills, outside hitter Lauren Ford says she learned valuable lessons that she plans on taking into her senior year. “One thing I saw was just a passion from the defenders. They always had this ridiculous energy that you don’t normally see in a lot of defenders,” Ford said. She also explained that she wants to be more vocal with that passion as well. Dobson agreed saying she wants to carry that same passion into the aspects of her play and also highlighted the value of teamwork. “We both have more of this appreciation for our own team; more so than we even did before. The only way a team is great is if everyone’s connecting and working together,” Dobson said. The 50s may be long gone, but Lipscomb’s own social clubs, Theta Psi and Delta Omega, are revisiting the era. The clubs will hold the school’s first Full Moon Festival, scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 8, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the Student Activities Center. Theta Psi’s president, Zach Bowen, had the idea for a 50s/60s prom dance, and the idea evolved into a festival with plenty of attractions such as swing dancing, a live band, ice cream floats, a soda station, photo booth and corn hole. The live band consists of all Theta Psi members, split into two separate bands. They will performing songs from the fifties and sixties, as well some songs from the seventies, eighties and nineties. The festival has a specific purpose, as Theta Psi social planner Everett Davis explained. “We’re trying to unite everybody in our good, clean fun event,” Davis said. The event also has an important mission at its core involving the university’s drug and alcohol awareness policy. “We want to stand in support of the drug and alcohol awareness policy of our school in a way that shows we can all have a great time while still keeping in step with the mission,” the event’s Facebook page reads. Theta Psi had partnered with Delta Omega for the event. The girls’ club has helping financially, as well as helping set up the event and paying for some things. “We’ve done a few things with [Delta Omega] before, and we thought that they’d want to be a part of it,” Davis said. Allen Arena hosted another exciting game on Thursday night as the Bisons’ basketball team topped Florida Gulf Coast University 92-71 with the help of sharp 3-point shooting. From the tip-off, the Eagles of FGCU scored two points to lead 2-0, but the Bisons answered, scoring six straight three-pointers. From there, Lipscomb never looked back, leading by 20 at the half. Bisons head coach Casey Alexander said that the shooting helped lead the team to victory. “We shot the ball great the whole night, and making our first six was a huge lift for us…confidence wise, and we held the lead from there,” Alexander said. In the second half, the Bisons cooled off, but they stayed consistent and continued to be aggressive, take shots and most importantly, make the shots. In total, Lipscomb scored fifteen three’s, six from junior forward Martin Smith, one from senior guard/forward Khion Sankey, three from freshman guard Josh Williams and three from redshirt freshman guard J.C. Hampton. Martin Smith and Hampton tied for 21 points to lead the team. Junior forward Malcolm Smith and sophomore guard Talbott Denny also scored double digits with 20 points and 11, respectively. As good as the shooting was, Alexander said that the perimeter shooting was not necessarily part of the plan on Thursday. “We just took the shots that came to us,” Alexander said. “We didn’t come out here trying to shoot a lot of three’s; that wasn’t really part of the game plan.” FGCU responded to Lipscomb’s shooting, as junior guard Brett Comer lead the charge with 27 points. Junior volleyball players Lauren Ford and Jewell Dobson will represent Lipscomb University in the tryouts for the United States Volleyball Team, an honor given to only two other athletes in school history. The others, Jake Pease and Alex Kelly, played together from the 2007-08 season to the 2010-11 season. “I grew up looking up to Alex Kelly and Jake Pease, who have been in this position before,” outside hitter Lauren Ford said. “I would look up to [Pease and Kelly], hoping to be as good as them.” “They’re the type of players who have left a legacy at Lipscomb, and to be in the same position they have been in says a lot,” middle blocker Jewell Dobson said. “It just says a lot about our success and the success that the program has had.” The tryouts begin Feb. 21 and go until Feb. 23 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Volleyball head coach Brandon Rosenthal said that the difference between Pease and Kelly and Dobson and Ford is that the girls this year are going together. In the past, Pease and Kelly traveled separately to the tryouts. This time around, Dobson and Ford will travel together, although Rosenthal doesn’t know if they’ll room together. “I just want them to go and have a great time and just do their best,” Rosenthal said. While there were plenty of pitches thrown at Dugan Field this past weekend, one of the most special was thrown by Lipscomb baseball’s most recent addition to the roster. Brooks Russell, the five-year-old recruit who was signed to the team by baseball coach Jeff Forehand on Feb. 5., was given the honor of throwing the season-opening pitch for the Bisons on Saturday in their season opener against Evansville. Standing halfway between the pitcher’s mound and home plate, Brooks delivered a toss that received a round of applause. Kari Russell, Brooks’ mother, said that Brooks is very excited for the upcoming season. “He’s been super excited, asking about coming to the games,” Kari Russell said. “He really feels like he’s a part of the team.” “It’s totally boosted his confidence; some of it’s gone to his head a little,” she joked. While the team battled Evansville, Brooks sat right above Lipscomb’s dugout for much of the game. The Bisons, however, fell to the Purple Aces 8-2 on Saturday and also lost in their double-header on Sunday, 10-7 and 3-2. Despite the losses, Kari Russell says that Brooks will forever hold on to the memory of getting to be a part of the Bisons’ team. “I’m very sure that he’ll remember this for the rest of his life,” Kari Russell said. The Bisons begin their season 0-3 at Dugan Field, a downgrade from last season’s series opener when the team won two games out of three against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
