Lipscomb men’s soccer (4-8-0, 3-1-0 ASUN) secured its spot in the ASUN Championship Saturday, defeating the Liberty Flames 3-1 in the Bisons’ first home game in two weeks. Star forward Logan Paynter called it a “little bit of a weird game.” “The other team takes a red card, and they become very defensive,” Paynter said. “We had to be very patient and wait for those opportunities. We had quite a few; we took three of them and that was enough.” The ASUN’s leading scorer, Tresor Mbuyu, intercepted a pass meant for Lipscomb’s goalkeeper and tucked it away in the 11th minute to give the Flames an early lead. Then the Bisons got on the board when Paynter was dragged down in the box in the 28th minute, drawing a red card and a penalty kick. Ryan Birchfield sent the penalty shot home to tie the game. In the 39th minute, Daniel Muhlbauer scored the first goal of his Lipscomb career to give the Bisons the lead. “I waited way too long for it, and now finally scoring… it’s a pretty big moment for me, and I’m really happy about it,” said Muhlbauer. Paynter’s goal in the 67th minute put the nail in the coffin. “We lost a lot of very, very close games [this season],” Paynter said. “A lot of one-goal games, overtime games, maybe games we should’ve won, but didn’t take our chances, and that just taught us how to win.” All proceeds from ticket sales and a charity raffle for a framed jersey went to the American Cancer Society. Months of hard work finally paid off for Tau Phi, as the men in the social club showcased their skills in the 39th annual Cowboy Show. Directed by Tau Phi member Jonathan Flatt and assistant director Wyatt Eaton, the show featured both new and classical country hits. “This has been two months of work,” Eaton said. “I know personally. I was at rehearsal five nights a week for five hours. I think everybody together just putting in time outside of it, and inside of it took a lot of time . . . days and days and days of preparation.” Eaton said he would describe himself as “the man-power behind the show.” Act 1 started off with a bang when members of Tau Phi sang, “John Deere (Tau Phi) Green.” The show featured a lot of variety, with solo, group and medley acts. The covers ranged from George Strait to Maddie & Tae. Collins Alumni Auditorium was a packed house, with students, alumni and parents here for Lipscomb parents weekend filling the audience. “The show was funny, but it also had some great vocalists,” student Kenan Sakic said. “I enjoyed it all the way through.” The show also incorporates female vocalists on Lipscomb’s campus. “I think we are all really proud of what we were able to put out there,” Pi Delta member Cassie Beth said. The show always closes with “Cowboys Like Us” by George Strait. The Lipscomb men’s soccer team was defeated in overtime by No. 6 Kentucky by a score of 3-2. The team is now on a five-game losing streak before heading into conference play. “Another tough loss; this one is especially tough,” head coach Charles Morrow said. “Disappointed in the results certainly, but really proud of the guys and the way we played. “I think today was a step forward in the season, even though it was a loss. Sometimes it’s hard to see the positives with losses mounting up.” Kentucky came into the game strong when midfielder, Kalil Elmedkhar, scored the first goal just over the minute mark. This was Elmedkhar’s second goal of the season. The score remained 1-0 at halftime. Kentucky scored again in the fifty-second minute. Aime Mabika secured the goal by a penalty kick, to put the Wildcats up 2-0. One minute later, the Bisons started to find their momentum when Ryan Birchfield scored a minute later, in the fifty-third minute, on a penalty kick. This is the first goal Kentucky has let up all season. Birchfield helped the Bisons again to tie the game by assisting a goal in the seventy-fourth minute, made by Logan Paynter. Regulation ended with the score 2-2, sending the game into overtime. Kentucky’s Jj Williams scored in the ninety-fifth minute. Bison goalkeeper, Luke Wilson came out, and the ball found an empty net.
