Bisons fall to Bruins in season’s first Battle of the Boulevard

In the 135th iteration of the Battle of the Boulevard, the Bisons lost to their same-street rival Belmont for the sixth consecutive time 87-62. Sophomore Josh Williams was one of the few bright spots for the Bisons. He scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds. The Bruins started off the game scorching with a pair of quick baskets from Junior Craig Bradshaw and Senior Reece Chamberlain in front of the raucous Lipscomb crowd. The baskets helped spark a 19-5 to begin the game for Belmont. By the halfway point of the first half, the Bisons cut the lead down to single digits, 24-16 thanks to the trio of senior Martin Smith, sophomore J.C. Hampton and Williams. In what was a game of streaks, the Bruins responded with another hot streak of their own. Belmont held a commanding 40-26 lead with less than three minutes left to play before halftime. “When we go on a run, it just takes one simple thing like a missed rotation or a breakdown just to stop the run,” Smith said, “We just got to get the little things right.” Smith scored surpassed 1,000 points for his career on the night, joining his brother Malcolm who surpassed the milestone in the 2014 Atlantic Sun Tournament. “It feels pretty good, wish we could’ve got the win though.” Smith said. Had it not been for a pair of three point plays, one traditional and one the hard way, from Williams and another three from freshman Nate Moran in the final moments of the half, the halftime deficit may have been insurmountable. The Bisons, however, only trailed by...

Bisons cap busy sports day with opening night win

On a day that saw the Lipscomb men’s and women’s basketball, men’s soccer and volleyball teams all play home games, the Bisons almost finished the marathon undefeated. The men’s basketball team provided the nightcap for the day, taking down Berry College 91-70 in their season opener. Head coach Casey Alexander played everyone on the roster early and often, including the four freshmen and one transfer new to the team. Even with usual starter Malcolm Smith not dressing out, the Bisons had more than enough players to go around. “We went into the game with the intention of giving everybody as many minutes as we could and spreading those out, and we were able to stick with it” Alexander said, “it wasn’t nearly as pretty as we wanted it to be, but that [the subbing strategy] was by design.” With many players subbing in and out throughout the game, the Bisons were able to keep fresh bodies in the game constantly in an effort to keep their pace at a high level. Lipscomb was forcing turnovers and scoring off of fast breaks all night, especially during an 11-5 run to start the second half. Berry College was never able to recover from the Bisons run to begin the first half. Lipscomb continued to push the ball, and the quick pace resulted in two big breakaway dunks from Josh Williams, the night’s leading scorer with 32 points on 9-15 shooting. Senior Martin Smith filled up the stat sheet in the win. Smith finished with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Out of all the Bisons debuting on the night, freshman...

Lumination’s 2014 Dove Awards preview: Best Artist

In less than a week, the 45th annual Dove Awards will be taking place in Allen Arena. With Lumination’s final installment of our Dove Awards preview series, I will be breaking down the Best Artist category. This year’s nominees for Best Artist are: Casting Crowns 2 Hillsong United 5 Lecrae 4 Mandisa 5 NEEDTOBREATHE 3 Switchfoot 4 The lineup is full of heavy hitters in the world of Christian music. All of the artists up for this award earned nominations in multiple categories. The Casting Crowns notched two nominations, NEEDTOBREATHE earned three, Switchfoot and Lecrae received four each and Mandisa and Hillsong United lead the pack with five. Hillsong United have to be considered the favorite in this category. Their smash hit “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)” earned nominations in the categories of Song of the Year, Worship Song of the Year, Contemporary Christian Performance of the Year and Pop/Contemporary Song of the Year, and it is the favorite to take home most of them. “Oceans” and the band in general have been everywhere this year, so I would not be surprised if they ended up going home with a wheelbarrow full of trophies. Switchfoot, NEEDTOBREATHE and Casting Crowns are always formidable foes when it comes to Chrsitian music awards, but I do not think they can stop the momentum Hillsong has built up. Mandisa is another strong opponent. Her song “Overcomer” was nominated for four awards as well. Keep her in mind as a potential dark horse candidate if she begins to pick up awards throughout the show. However, I think the true threat to Hillsong’s night of...

Men’s soccer nets last minute win in A-Sun opener

The men’s soccer team notched a win in the final moments of their first Atlantic Sun Conference game of the season Wednesday night. The Bisons came back from a 1-0 deficit to win 2-1 in the 87 minute. Junior Matt Kerridge scored off of an assist from Senior Omar Djabi to give the Bisons the lead in the waning moments. Although Lipscomb dominated ball possession for most of the game, USC Upstate held the league for the game’s first 65 minutes. The Spartans earned a penalty kick in the 32 minute, and junior Marvin Schmiege converted to give them the 1-0 lead. Senior Luke Gearin headed the ball into the back of the net to tie the game up at one. Gearin scored off of a free kick from Djabi, one of his two assists in the game. The goal was Gearin’s six for the season, putting him in first place in the A-Sun. Djabi also moved into first place in an A-Sun category thanks to his two assists. He now has five assists on the season, enough to tie him with fellow Bison, freshman Ivan Alvarado, for first in the conference. Lipscomb outshot the Spartans 30-7 on the night, including 15-3 in the second half. Despite the two goals allowed, Upstate’s sophomore goalkeeper Hassan Haddad had a strong showing with seven saves on the barrage of Bison...

Men’s soccer earns first home loss of season

After winning their first two home games of the season, the Lipscomb men’s soccer team earned their first home loss on Friday night against Georgia State 3-1. With less than ten minutes having elapsed from the game clock, the Panthers struck early thanks to a goal from freshman Rashid Alarape. Georgia State clung on to their 1-0 lead for the rest of the half with continuous ball possession. The Bisons came close to scoring late in the first half when senior Luke Gearin headed the ball just wide of the net off of a corner kick. The Panthers struck early again in the second half, this time less than two minutes after kickoff. Senior Stephen McGill scored the goal. Less than two minutes later, McGill scored again. McGill’s second score came from the penalty spot after the Panthers drew a foul in the goal box. In the 17th minute, the Bisons got on the scoreboard. In a play that echoed the missed goal opportunity in the first half, Gearin headed the ball into the the net off of a corner kick from freshman Ivan Alvarado. A re-energized Bison squad attacked the net constantly in the final fifteen minutes, but could never find the back of the net.
