Men’s soccer wins big in home opener

The Lipscomb men’s soccer team took a commanding 4-1 victory over Houston Baptist on Wednesday night in their regular season home opener. The Bisons got out to a quick start thanks to a leaping header from junior Anthony Cedano in the 15th minute. Freshman Ivan Alvarado got the assist off of a long, arching cross. In the 23rd minute, senior Omar Djabi rocketed in a shot from outside the box to give Lipscomb a 2-0 lead. After thwarting away many attempts from the Huskies, Lipscomb finally allowed a goal in the 31st minute from Houston Baptist sophomore Tobenna Uzo. The Bisons ended the first half with a 2-1 lead. In the second half, Alvarado scored off an assist from Djabi in the 74th minute, giving each player both a goal and an assist for the game. Less than two minutes later Lipscomb earned a penalty kick. May 2013 graduate Meghan Day dies suddenly Wednesday; celebration of life set

The Lipscomb community is mourning the death of recent Lipscomb graduate Meghan Day. Day, a May 2013 graduate and fashion merchandising major, died suddenly on Wednesday. a May 2013 graduate and fashion merchandising major Day was active in campus events as a member of social club Delta Omega. She also participated in the 2010 Lipscomb in Vienna Global Learning program. The Lipscomb community came together Thursday night in Ezell’s Swang Chapel for a time of prayer and remembrance. In a message to the student body, Senior Vice President for Student Life Scott McDowell said to “please lift this family up in your prayers.” To honor Day, a celebration of life will take place at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga’s Patten Chapel on Sunday, Aug. 31, at 2 p.m. Additional reporting by Cory...

Former Lipscomb academic pioneer died Monday

Longtime faculty member Earl Dennis, 88, passed away on Monday. Dennis began working at Lipscomb in 1960 for the mathematics faculty and stayed at the university for over 30 years. In 1977, he was appointed to the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs underneath President Willard Collins. He took over as the dean of faculty in 1988, and stayed in that position until his retirement in 1992. Despite spending such a large percentage of his life in the academic field Dennis originally began working as a control engineer for National Carbon Company in Columbia, Tenn. after receiving a bachelor’s degree in engineering at Vanderbilt. Dennis used this experience outside of education to bring in a unique and innovative approach to academics at the university. “Dr. Dennis was always trying to improve,” executive assistant to the provost Mary Bouldin said to Lipscomb University, “Each year he would have the faculty evaluate how he was doing as a leader. He was forward thinking and very interested in people. He and his wife, Pearl, regularly had students and faculty in their home.” While at Lipscomb, the school changed its status from college to university, helped begin the school’s first graduate program, added many undergraduate programs, and even led the school’s change from a Monday-Friday system for classes to the current schedule of Monday-Wednesday-Friday and Tuesday-Thursday. During this period, the school also transitioned from a quarter system to a semester system. “He worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure faculty had the tools and resources they needed to be successful,” current Chief Academic Officer W.
