Freshman Ellen Lundy has already recorded big accomplishments and made several memories during her first season on the Lady Bisons soccer team. Lundy finished the regular season as the Atlantic Sun co-leader in points with 31. The freshman standout scored 14 goals overall, setting a Lipscomb record for most goals in a season. She was also recently ranked number 68 on Top Drawer Soccer’s top 100 freshman list. And, this past weekend, she had a major role in helping the Lady Bison reach their first appearance in the conference tournament in school history. Lundy hails from Rogers, Ark. She says her decision to come to Lipscomb was an easy one. “When I came on my visit, I loved the culture and community of the school,” Lundy said. “Then, I met the girls and coaches, who were so awesome. It was just encouraging and easy.” Entering the biggest stage of her career yet, Lundy wanted to prove she belonged at the collegiate level. “I didn’t know what to expect coming in, but I just wanted to prove I could play at the Division I level and accomplish my goal of helping contribute to the team anyway I could. I feel like I did that,” Lundy said. One of Lundy’s favorite moments of the season was the Lady Bison big 2-1 win over Mercer, who is the defending A-Sun champion. Lundy scored both goals with the game-winner coming in the 83rd minute. “Looking back, when we beat Mercer was a huge win for us that kick started our season and gave us energy and hope that we could make the tournament,” Lundy said. By Brianne Welch and Jesica Parsley Four transfers and five freshman bring a new dynamic to the Lady Bison Basketball team’s 2013-2014 season. Beginning his second year as head coach, Greg Brown has seen great development in the young team during the pre-season while teaching the four transfers and five freshmen the Lady Bison dynamics. “We are teaching the basic dynamics and breaking habits of the new girls,” Brown said. “But we have seen all the players develop to what we are trying to do across the board.” With so many new faces on the court, the team dynamic is different, but the players are embracing the new team. “I think we’re definitely clicking,” redshirt sophomore Danay Fothergill said. “Coming from the summer to now we know each other’s tendencies and strong points. We are getting to know each other on the floor better.” The flow between the girls as well as the team connection will drive them through a season that has already deemed the Lady Bisons the “underdog”. “I think it’s cool to be the underdog,” Fothergill said. “Our mindset is, you all have no idea what we’re about to do.” Coach Brown says he is pushing the team to be a little better every day in order to be in the best position to perform well and come out on the winning side. “We always tell them we can prepare you but then competing is what you do in the game,” Brown said. “We have to get better every day, play hard and play smart. Helping the environment and saving people money with a new type of crocheting is Accounts Payable Clerk Ginger Santiago’s passion. Santiago acquired her crafting skills from family tradition and began crocheting in high school. Her mother paints and her grandmother knits, so Santiago picked up on crocheting. Santiago found a new form of crafting, called plarning, from searching on the internet. She thought it would help her create things for her grandchildren. “I knew I was going to make the grandkids stuff often, but I didn’t want to spend all the money at one time,” Santiago said. “Plarning is a free way for me to make whatever I want.” Plarning involves cutting plastic grocery bags into strings similar to yarn and then crocheting them together. Santiago says she has received many bags from her coworkers. “I got everyone in the office to bring me their grocery bags, which is when I really started having fun,” she said. Santiago says she did not realize until she made several items that she was recycling in a fun way. “Plarning is a free hobby that helps the environment as well, and it can’t get much better than that,” Santiago said. Santiago’s plarning helps save the environment and helps her customers save money. Santiago’s mother sells her own paintings, as well as Santiago’s plarning items. “Since the plastic bags are free, the items sell for just a few dollars, which helps a lot in today’s world,” Santiago said. New Artist of the Year is one of the top awards to be given away at the Dove Awards. The 2013 nominees include Capital Kings, Colton Dixon, for King & Country, Rhett Walker Band and Tasha Cobbs. Capital Kings is a Christian pop band of Gotee Records. Their debut album was released in January 2013 and entered the Billboard Christian Albums Chart Top 5. Colton Dixon is from Murfreesboro and with Sparrow Records. His debut single, “You Are”, was released in October 2012. A Messenger, his second album, was released in January 2013 and hit number one on the U.S. Christian and Gospel Charts. For King & Country is a Christian rock band composed of Australian-born brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone. The band is signed with Fervent label. The band’s debut album, Crave, was released in February 2012, and it hit number four on Billboard’s Christian Albums Chart. The Rhett Walker Band is a Christian rock band from Nashville and signed with Essential Records. The band’s debut album,Come to the River, was released in July 2012. The band’s debut single, “When Mercy Found Me,” was Grammy nominated. Tasha Cobbs is from Atlanta signed with EMI Gospel. Her major-label debut album, Grace, was released in February 2013. Lipscomb students and gospel music fans alike were tuned in during the first week of classes when the nominations for the Dove Awards were announced in the Hall of Fame room at Allen Arena. Chris Tomlin and Matt Redman led the way in nominations with eight each. Tomlin will be going up against Francesca Battistelli, Lecrae, Tamela Mann and TobyMac for Artist of the Year. The nominations came as no surprise to Kelsey Turner, a junior business major from Smyrna. “When I looked at the nominations online, I wasn’t surprised with one nominee because I thought they all fit perfectly,” Turner said. Lumination Co-Managing Editor Brianne Welch personally knows Dove nominee Cliff Duren. “He was the assistant music director at my home church in Georgia and moved to Nashville to further his music career,” Welch said. Duren received a Choral Collection of the Year nod for Carry Your Name. “I am really happy for him.” Welch said. “I feel like I know somebody famous.” Some students were excited to see the nominees because they set the stage for the actual awards show, which is set to take place on Oct. 15 in Allen Arena. “I really like the lineup and am excited to see what each artist brings to the stage,” said Emily Townsend, a junior children’s ministry major from Chattanooga. “After the nominations, I realized that there is so much talent within the Christian genre,” Townsend said. “It’s a growing industry.” A couple of classes in the Communication department got the chance to cover the press conference for the nominations.
