Lipscomb women’s soccer defeats Jacksonville State 3-0

The Lipscomb women’s soccer team (2-0-2) secured a 3-0 win over Jacksonville State (1-3) at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex Sunday night. Senior Alex Hickey was able to finish off an assist from sophomores Natalie DuBoise and Jade Abarca, then nine minutes later, freshman Maycie McKay capitalized on a poor throw by the Jacksonville State goalie. Head coach Kevin O’Brien said he was proud of the girls for playing so well on a short turnaround from last Thursday’s match against Cincinnati. “We dug in and continued to defend well,” O’Brien said. “Counting exhibition games, we are at six shutouts in a row, which is a pretty long run.” DuBoise scored to seal the game in the 80th minute. “We really wanted to press them and get a couple of early goals, and that’s what we did in the first half — that way we could come out a little more confident going into the second half,” DuBoise said. However, there were no yellow cards awarded and only a handful of free kicks. “There were a couple of late challenges, but again part of that is fatigue,” O’Brien said. “I don’t think it is a malicious intent from players on the ball — it is just [that] they are a little bit late with tired legs and they are not getting there as quickly as they would on a mid-week game.” “Non-conference games are basically to try and fine tune your teams to try and make a run in the conference,” O’Brien said. “It’s been great — we’ve been building a lot of confidence and self-belief.” The Lady Bisons will return to the...

Flying Colours brings anthemic pop sounds to Shamblin for SGA’s fall concert

The band Flying Colours made its way from Jackson, Tenn. to Nashville this Saturday to rock SGA’s fall concert. The band is made up of a group of Union University students who have known each other since high school. Flying Colours’ full-length album, All the Answers, was released in early 2013. The follow-up EP, Resist, was released in July of 2014. The band performed songs from both albums, and the first 40 students got a free copy of the full-length album. The band’s sound blends the sounds of anthemic pop and soft rock. “I like to say that it is pop, but I don’t know if many people would agree with that just because it is kind of like nerdy pop. So I call it Sci-Fi Rock,” said lead singer Rob Griffith. Fans from Jackson and Lipscomb students also got to hear opening acts Sam Mcleod, a Nashville based alternative artist and The Pandoras, a group made up of Lipscomb students. Previous SGA concerts for the student body have included Dave Barnes, The Civil Wars and Judah & the...

Cracker Barrel communications representative Maria Janella Escobar shares insight on corporate communication

Cracker Barrel communications representative Maria Janella Escobar spoke to the importance of corporate communication at November’s installment of Media Masters Monday night in the Ezell Center. Escobar is the director and head of corporate communications at the restaurant. She worked with FedEx, Hilton Hotels and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital before joining Cracker Barrel’s communications team. Corporate communication is a multi-faceted field, mixing various elements of the business world into relaying a message to those in the public. Part of Escobar’s work involves communicating the Cracker Barrel brand to the company’s audience. Those duties include refining the marketing campaign. She explained that businesses have to find a way to relate to their customers through marketing. “It’s just talking to people, and that is how people relate to companies and brands.” Escobar said. Escobar also explained the difference between a crisis and an issue in the corporate communications world. A crisis is an unexpected event that cannot be prepared for. An issue is a reoccurring problem that can be prepared for. She said that accountability is a must when working in communications. “When you make a mistake, you have to admit you made a mistake,” Escobar said. A big part of any company is working in the present to ensure a bright future. Escobar said she hopes the popular country-themed restaurant’s reputation can grow while still maintaining the brand’s timeless value. To Escobar, the company needs to remain true to its traditional values and atmosphere, opposed to rebranding campaigns that many restaurants are undergoing. The communications expert took questions from the audience, sharing her knowledge with the communication-minded crowd of...
