Bisons struggle during second half in loss to North Florida

It was Star Wars night Saturday in Allen Arena, but the Force was not with the Bisons. Lipscomb lost 75-66 to North Florida, with first place in the Atlantic Sun Conference on the line. This game brought in over 3,000 fans — one of the largest crowds of the season. The Bisons entered the first half strong, with forward Malcolm Smith scoring the first goal of the game. The Bisons ended the first half with a 29-19 lead. “The first 20 minutes are easily the best 20 minutes we’ve played all year on both ends of the floor,” head coach Casey Alexander said. “We made very few mistakes in the first half.” In the second half, North Florida led by 13 points, sparked by 24 from Beau Beech in the second half. Beech led all scorers with 27 points. The Bisons did not go down easily, cutting the UNF lead to single figures. Guard Josh Williams led the team with 21 points. He has double figures in 21 of his last 22 games. “Josh is playing so hard,” Alexander said. “He wants the ball. He wants to be the guy and deliver.” Also in double figures for the Bisons were Smith with 13, followed by guard J.C. Hampton with 12 and forward Talbott Denny with 11. The men’s basketball team was 0-4 in the Atlantic Sun Conference at the beginning of the 2013-2014 season, but this year the team is 4-1 — the best conference start in the history of the program. “Nobody’s happy about the result by any stretch, but this loss is better than several of the wins we’ve...

Men’s soccer looks ahead after concluding first place season

Lipscomb’s men’s soccer team ended its season Friday night in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, but despite the loss the team did finish with a successful season. The Bisons had the home field advantage for the tournament after they earned the right by tying for first place in the A-Sun regular season with a 4-1-1 record, 12-4-1 overall. It was the first ever regular season championship for the men’s  team since joining the conference. Not only did the Bisons receive team acknowledgements, but also individual players were recognized by the Atlantic Sun. Senior Luke Gearin was named the Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Year, and freshman Ivan Alvarado was Freshman of the Year. The team had five players on the Atlantic Sun All-Conference team. The Bisons entered the tournament with high expectations based on their season record, but unfortunately they couldn’t pull through. The men lost 3-0 to North Florida who eventually won the tournament championship. The Bisons matched up against the Ospreys on a freezing evening this past Friday. The weather was easily one of the biggest challenges that each competing team faced during the tournament weekend. Despite the below freezing temperature, fans showed up to support the Bisons and cheer them on. “The weather was definitely something to deal with for all of the teams,” senior Zander El-Hindi said. “It speaks volumes to us as a team that our fans cheered us on for ninety minutes in twenty-degree weather.” UNF took the lead early on in the game scoring their first goal only nine minutes in. The Bisons worked hard to catch up and take the lead,...

Men’s golf prepares for spring season after successful fall campaign

The men’s golf team at Lipscomb put the finishing touches on the most successful fall season since the athletic program made the move to NCAA Division I. Will Brewer, director of golf and the head coach of the men’s golf team, was impressed with the fall as the team met most of his expectations including winning a tournament as a team and also having an individual player win as well. But the team is still planning on improving by working on the basic fundamentals, and making sure that all of the players are in the right mindset during each match. “We continue to talk about process,” Brewer said. “How you think, how you prepare for a particular shot. It allows you to swing unimpeded and helps you take a better shot.” By focusing on the process, it allows for the players to gain confidence and produce a better shot. Brewer said maintaining concentration during a golf game is important. “We’ll continue to work on the fundamentals and the things that we have to do to get better.” Brewer said. The top finishes for the men in the fall included a first place finish at the Kenny Perry Invitational hosted by Western Kentucky, a third place finish at the Pinetree Intercollegiate hosted by Kennesaw State and a sixth place finish at The Grove Invitational, co-hosted by Lipscomb and Middle Tennessee State, in College Grove. The Bisons had an outstanding recruiting class for the 2014 season, and that showed out on the golf course. Freshman Dawson Armstrong was a standout new team member. Armstrong was the MVP of the season despite...

Phi Sigma Date Auction provides fun, charitable night

90s singers, gods and goddesses and even Miley Cyrus were present on the Lipscomb University campus the night of Oct. 23. Phi Sigma hosted its 10th annual Phi Sigma Date Auction, and students were excited about the night. The event is hosted with a charity in mind, and this year the proceeds from the event went to Thistle Farms. Thistle Farms is a social enterprise group that is run by the women that stay in the Magdalene House. The women create natural body and bath products and sell them. They create products that are both good for the environment and for the people that use the products. “We were able to do a great thing for a great cause,” Sarah Robertson, the date auction director, said. Robertson was in charge of the event, and is very involved with the mission of Thistle Farms. Thistle Farms ultimate goal is to give women who are on the streets a second chance by providing a healthy place to stay and work. The money made on the products goes directly back to the women who made them. Thistle Farms products are now sold in over 200 stores around Tennessee. Phi Sigma puts on the date auction in hopes of raising money to help other women be added into Thistle Farms. They do so in a fun way, with each group dressing up in a different theme, and then members of the audience bid on the participants. “Date auction is fun because all of the social clubs come out and support,” Savannah Pickens, the host for the evening, said. “The process of being host...

IDEAL program forms bond between students and peer mentors

The IDEAL program is still a relatively new program on campus and is constantly growing. The program has already grown from three students to 11 in only a semester. As a result of that, the need for peer mentors to spend time with the IDEAL students has also grown. Lipscomb students have stepped up to the task. As of right now, IDEAL has around 50 peer mentors in rotation. The responsibilities of the mentors vary. They help IDEAL students with homework and teaching study skills, help run workouts in the SAC, and even join the IDEAL students for lunch. “My favorite part about being a peer mentor is building individual relationships and being able to experience the joy and perspective they bring to campus nonstop.” said Meghan Anglim, a senior peer mentor. “It’s great to have genuine friends.” Peer mentors also are given the opportunity to attend mentoring workshops. The workshops offer the volunteers the chance to get further insight into the program and help them learn how to go about different scenarios. The workshops also give the mentors time to get to know one another and meet new people. The peer mentor group has grown so large that the chapel office created a breakout chapel devoted to IDEAL. The IDEAL breakout is a six week series that focuses on topics related to disability and faith. The chapel also gives the mentors and IDEAL students the opportunity to share their testimonies and converse with one another. “For me, one of the best things about the IDEAL chapel is that it’s helping the Lipscomb community understand that our students want...
