Bison baseball snuffs out No. 8 Vanderbilt at First Tennessee Park

Lipscomb took down the eighth-best college baseball team in the country Tuesday night. In a neutral-site game played at the minor-league First Tennessee Park, the Bisons (11-13) used a three-run triple and impeccable bullpen pitching to take down the No. 8 Vanderbilt Commodores (17-9) by a final score of 5-1. “Any win at any time is so vital,” Lipscomb’s coach Jeff Forehand said. “But everybody knows the caliber of team that we were playing. And when you play one of the best teams in the country and you come out on top, it does give your team a boost.” The three-run hit in the fifth, courtesy of junior first-baseman Cade Sorrells, propelled Lipscomb headfirst towards victory, but there were other small details that helped Lipscomb keep momentum in their favor as well. In the third inning, junior left-fielder Tevin Symonette jumped and bounced off of the fence while he caught a fly ball to help keep the game tied at zero. “I think it helped us set the tempo of how the game was going to go,” Forehand said of the catch. Starting junior pitcher Kyle Kemp put in an odd performance for Lipscomb in four innings. On one end, he allowed no hits, struck out three, and allowed one run on a sacrifice fly. On the flipside, he posted seven walks, dragging innings out much longer than they needed to go. “To say I’m concerned about it, no, because it didn’t hurt us,” Forehand said. He also called Kemp “a strikeout guy.” The Commodores took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from...

Bisons baseball beats UNCG at home after losing three consecutive games

The Bisons relied on quality pitching and a seventh-inning-lead-changing home run to cap off their weekend, winning one-of-three against UNC Greensboro. The Lipscomb Bisons (9-11) began the weekend series against the UNCG Spartans (14-5) with a 9-3 loss on Friday and a 13-9 loss the following day. This came after an 8-7 loss at Belmont earlier in the week. But things finally worked out on Sunday. “Today we got in striking distance in the sixth inning,” Lipscomb coach Jeff Forehand said. “It took us a while, and Tevin had the big homer.” In the Friday contest, Spartans junior pitcher Matt Frisbee stayed in the game for all nine innings, allowing only four hits and striking out 13 hitters. The Saturday game lasted for 13 innings, with the Spartans outscoring Lipscomb 6-2 in the last inning. On Sunday, junior left fielder Tevin Symonette broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh with his first home run of the season. The Bisons won 3-2. Starting freshman pitcher Noah Thompson allowed six hits and two runs. “With every start, he’s becoming more and more poised out there,” Forehand said. “Still a freshman, but after a few more starts he’s going to be seasoned, and we won’t be calling him a freshman anymore.” The Lipscomb outfield also played remarkably well. The Spartans could never seem to hit the ball in the right spot. Thompson himself only pitched one strikeout. UNCG got things started in the top of the second with a home run from senior left fielder Dillon Stewart to give the Spartans the early 1-0 lead. In the top of...
Bisons baseball wins two-of-three in weekend series against Michigan

Bisons baseball wins two-of-three in weekend series against Michigan

On an overcast day with a wet field, gameplay started two hours earlier than originally planned. But just before the rain could interrupt the contest, the Lipscomb Bisons (8-8) pulled out a 4-2 victory to close out a weekend series against the Michigan Wolverines (4-10) with two straight wins. They did so by not allowing any runs after the first inning. “The story of this weekend was our pitching staff,” Lipscomb coach Jeff Forehand said. “They really just did a great job.” The Bisons began the weekend with a 16-11 loss on Friday in which senior shortstop Blake Thomas and junior first baseman Cade Sorrells each tacked on three runs for the Bisons. The Bisons pitching staff played three, including starting freshman pitcher Max Habegger (0-1), who threw for just over two innings and allowed five runs. Lipscomb followed the loss with a 7-4 victory on Saturday. Starting junior pitcher Chris Kachmar (1-0) pitched six innings and allowed four runs, while junior pitcher Robbie Knox finished off the final three innings allowing zero hits and zero runs. Senior catcher Jeffrey Crisan ran in a team-high two scores. “We didn’t put ourself in a bad spot like we talked about on Friday,” Forehand said of both Saturday and Sunday’s games. “We corrected those things.” On Sunday, the Wolverines began with two runs in the first inning. The first occurred on an RBI double by senior first baseman Brock Keener; the second on an RBI single by senior third baseman Hector Gutierrez. Junior left fielder Miles Lewis and Keener each were credited with a run. The Bisons responded in the bottom...
Jonathan Seamon’s rich history with the Lipscomb Bisons goes beyond ESPN3

Jonathan Seamon’s rich history with the Lipscomb Bisons goes beyond ESPN3

You might recognize Jonathan Seamon as one of the ESPN3 reporters who sits on press row during Lipscomb men’s home basketball games. But the talented broadcaster’s history with the NCAA tournament-bound Bisons extends beyond his play-by-play work. If you head a little ways south of campus, you’ll find Brentwood Hills Church of Christ. Within one of the administrative offices sits the Executive Minister, Seamon himself. The former Lipscomb student and sports administrator’s office is decorated with posters, photographs, bobbleheads, basketballs, baseballs, mugs and everything in between. The common theme with most of his relics is the purple and gold. His current church position is an offspring of his Lipscomb tenure. “I was thinking about going into adult education,” Seamon said, “and I was attending Brentwood Hills already, and they wanted me to teach a college class. “So when I told them my interest, they came back and said, ‘Well, would you consider doing part-time youth work?’ So I spent several years as a youth minister, and then that kind of grew into a family minister and then later into administrative.” Seamon, a Mocksville, North Carolina-native, made his college decision back during the 1970s, thanks to his closest friend from childhood. “We were part of Church of Christ,” Seamon said, “and my brother had gone to Lipscomb.” Seamon primarily studied public administration, as well as government and minored in speech. He also held governor and presidential positions in different clubs at different times. But the sports world could only wait for him for so long. “I did coverage for the Babbler, the paper, at the time, and also doing public address...
