Women’s soccer was shut out, 4-0, by the Northern Kentucky Norse in the season opener Thursday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. The loss came after a strong pre-season slate in which they beat South Alabama and Middle Tennessee, outscoring those opponents 7-1. “We had a really good preseason,” coach Kevin O’Brien said. “We had two great performances and two great results.” That success didn’t carry over once the season began, however. The Norse scored the first two goals within the first 10 minutes of play. Both goals came within two minutes of one another. “I thought they started the game brighter than we did,” O’Brien said. “They took the lead pretty quickly and from then on, it was us chasing.” After the first 10 minutes, the Bisons turned things around by outshooting the visitors 8-6 during the half. But those shots didn’t make it past Norse goalkeeper Mimi Stines. In the second half, it was more of the same for the Norse goalkeeper, Stines as she continued to save shot after shot. She finished the game with nine saves and no goals against. The Bisons played two different goalkeepers: Melissa Gray in the first half and Hannah Parish in the second half. Both Bisons goalkeepers finished with two saves and two shots against. “It’s a really interesting game sometimes,because I didn’t think we played particularly poorly, but we gave up four goals,” O’Brien said. “I think someone from the outside would say we got smashed but in reality, we didn’t get smashed, it was a good competition.” The Bisons will host the battle of the boulevard against Belmont...

The NFL Draft is being held in Nashville this week for the first time ever. An estimated crowd of over 200,000 people attended the first round of the draft on Thursday. The NFL has taken over almost every inch of downtown. The main stage where the picks are announced is on lower Broadway, but the NFL is also holding a free festival across the Cumberland river in the parking lot of Nissan Stadium, called the NFL Draft Experience. The festival has photo opportunities with NFL memorabilia and trophies, chances to meet NFL players and free tours of the Titans locker room. On Thursday, the “NFL Draft Experience” had Titans players Marcus Mariota, Derrick Henry and Corey Davis along with several other NFL players. The full list of player appearances for Friday and Saturday’s festival can be found on the Fan Mobile Pass app. Attendees for the festival will need to download the Fan Mobile Pass app to be able to get access to many things. Nashville has become the epicenter for many national media outlets this week including ESPN and the NFL Network. ESPN’s popular show “College Gameday” broadcasted Thursday night from Broadway. Once the draft started on lower Broadway, the Arizona Cardinals selected Kyler Murray as the first overall selection. The hometown Titans picked later in the draft and selected Jeffery Simmons. Lipscomb baseball played the Kentucky Wildcats Wednesday night at Dugan Field in a game that came down to a tough fielding play and a rough eighth inning for the Bisons. A popup just beyond the infield in the fifth inning got lost in the lights and ended up bringing in two runs for the Wildcats. Then in the eighth inning, Kentucky was able to score four runs, all with two outs. Coming into the game The Bisons came into the game off a tough road trip that started with ASUN conference foe Florida Gulf Coast, who swept the Bisons in a three-game series, and ended in Knoxville where the Volunteers hit seven home runs to defeat Lipscomb 11- 2. Kentucky also came into the game on a rough stretch that had seen them lose seven of their past 10 games after starting their season with a 14-8 record. Senior Erik Gutierrez made his second start of the season for the Bisons on the mound, while Kentucky put forward freshman starting pitcher Dillon Marsh. Both starting pitchers have begun the season with rough stat lines. Gutierrez came in having pitched 10 innings on the season and earning a 4.50 era, while Marsh had pitched 24 innings and earned a 6.75 era. The Lipscomb baseball team fell to No. 6 Vanderbilt 15-1 on Tuesday night in the annual neutral-site meeting between the two teams. The game was held at First Tennessee Park in Nashville, which is currently home to local professional sports teams (the Nashville Sounds and Nashville SC). The first two innings of the game stayed quiet, while both starting pitchers got off to stellar starts. Lipscomb freshman pitcher Scott Elgin started off by getting out seven of the first eight batters he faced. However, in the bottom of the third inning Elgin seemed to lose control of his pitches; he walked the first two batters he faced in the inning before getting the next two batters out. Elgin was then one out away from getting out of the third inning, but a 2-2 pitch to Vanderbilt right fielder JJ Bleday was rocketed over the seats in right center field to put the Commodores on the board first 3-0. Elgin then gave up a walk after the home run, which prompted the Bisons to make their first pitching change of the game. The Commodores’ starting pitcher Mason Hickman was also able to get off to an amazing start as well; however, his hot start continued for his entire day unlike Elgin’s. Hickman only allowed one baserunner through his first five innings. Going into the sixth inning Hickman had a no-hitter on the line, but a hard hit two-out ground ball by Lipscomb catcher Chaz Bertolani forced Vanderbilt’s shortstop and third baseman to run into each other, giving the Bisons their first hit of the day. The Lady Bisons have been eliminated from post-season contention following their 69-53 loss to NJIT. Lipscomb turned the ball over 24 times which resulted in 36 points for the NJIT Highlanders. The Lady Bisons came into the game hoping to keep their A-Sun Tournament hopes alive by winning their next three games against ASUN opponents. However, this loss officially eliminates them from any chance of making it to the tournament. “It’s tough when you see how hard they work and then to see it not get rewarded is tough,” Lipscomb head coach Greg Brown said. The Lady Bisons lost seven players due to graduation last year. This forced them to play with a very young team that included six freshman players. “There’s always a learning curve,” Brown said. “We always try to tell them you don’t know when it’s going to click. You just have to get better individually which will make us better as a team.” Lipscomb is also without a single senior on the entire roster. “Without seniors you know that the journey continues and that you’re building for next season,” Brown said. “You’re going to see…growth out of these guys (next season).” The Game The first quarter of the game was dominated by missed shots for both teams. The Bisons and the Highlanders each had a field goal percentage below 32 percent during the quarter. However, the Bisons had a slightly better percentage than the Highlanders which allowed them to lead 13-12 at the end of the quarter.
