Presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin to speak on campus

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Dr. Doris Kearns Goodwin will speak on campus Feb. 4 about the current presidential election. Dubbed “America’s historian-in-chief” by New York magazine, Goodwin has written several highly regarded biographies of American presidents such as Lincoln and the Roosevelts. Her book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln was the basis for Steven Spielberg’s Academy Award winning 2012 film Lincoln. Goodwin received the 1995 Pulitzer Prize in history for her biography of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt titled No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II. A former professor of government at Harvard, Goodwin appears frequently on television as a political commentator. Students may recognize Goodwin from The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, among other shows. Goodwin’s newest book The Bully Pulpit, released in 2013, focuses on the relationship between Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. The book also won the Pulitzer Prize and the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction in 2014. Steven Spielberg is currently working on adapting the book into another film. In addition to her writing career, Goodwin assisted President Lyndon Johnson in the last year of his presidency. After helping Johnson prepare his memoirs she wrote her first book, a biography titled Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream. The event will be held in Stowe Hall at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4. Men’s basketball loses to Atlantic Sun newcomer NJIT

The Lipscomb men’s basketball team fell 90-78 to NJIT Monday night in Allen Arena. NJIT pressed a hard defense and relied on sinking three-point shots. “The reason they were 16-of-29 is because we allowed them to get clean looks and they got in rhythm,” head coach Casey Alexander said. The Highlanders caused the Bisons to reach a season high of 23 turnovers. Throughout the night, senior David Wishon scored a team high of 24 points. Joining Wishon in the double digits was junior J.C. Hampton with 18 points, sophomore George Brammeier with 12 points and sophomore Nathan Moran with 11 points. “NJIT took our three-point shooters away and they just let us throw it in there [down low],” Alexander said. “Thankfully, our guys had nice games.” The Highlanders were led by Damon Lynn, who scored 26 points and added five assists. The Bisons’ next game will be at 1 p.m. Saturday against USC Upstate. Photo courtesy of Lipscomb...

Men’s basketball falls short of comeback against USC Upstate

Sophomore Nathan Moran sent Saturday afternoon’s men’s basketball game into overtime with a 92-91 loss against USC Upstate. “Nathan is a really tough kid,” head basketball coach Casey Alexander said. “You got to have a lot of positive memory to make shots like that. I will take him shooting free throws just as much as I will be confident with everyone else on our team.” Allen Arena was not only filled with Bison fans but also Star Wars fans for the annual Adoption Rally and Star Wars Day. The contest also marked the 17th meeting between the two schools with each team having claimed eight wins in the series. Lipscomb was down 30-29 at halftime. The leading scorer for the Bisons was junior J.C. Hampton, leading the Bisons with 17 points. Upstate’s leading scorer in the first half was Philip Whittington who scored 10 points. “He is a good player and he played with a lot of confidence,” Alexander said. “I believe this was his career high in scoring. We have got to guard him better.” Lipscomb did have a season-high in steals with 14, but it wasn’t enough to stop USC Upstate. The Bisons will take on NJIT in Allen Arena at 6:30 p.m. Monday. “If we do not play better we will see the same result against NJIT that we experienced with Upstate tonight,” Alexander said. “NJIT is a good team. We played with a lot of passion up there to get the win at their home court. Passion is the reason we won against NJIT. We did not have that passion in this game and it is the...

Then & Now with the Bisons: CareHere founder Ben Baker

Ben Baker, a 1987 graduate, was a computer science major who spent over 15 years working for General Electric. Baker is now an entrepreneur in the healthcare industry. In 2004, he and his business partner started CareHere, a business that brings healthcare services to employees by placing medical facilities in convenient locations for the employees. The services which CareHere provides to the employees are provided free of charge to the patients. Employers hire CareHere to provide these services, and, thus, employers are able to save on insurance expenses. He met his business partner, Ernie Clevenger, when Baker began attending Harpeth Hills Church of Christ. Since that time, Clevenger and Baker have started and grown CareHere into the company it is now. “You know, it was a big shift for me to move from corporate world to the entrepreneurial space, but it was pretty exciting,” Baker said. Clevenger, the experienced entrepreneur, and Baker, the seasoned corporate veteran, combined their efforts. While Baker has enjoyed being an entrepreneur, he said it does come with “trade-offs.” “You have to wear every hat that there is conceivable,” Baker said. But in return, he said this new path is rewarding. “We feel like what we do makes a difference,” Baker said. “People can get access to care.” Baker said he also enjoys the freedom being an entrepreneur offers. “That’s another freedom that you have — the ability to steer it and direct it, and guide it in ways that you feel God is leading you do that,” Baker said. Twelve years after its start, CareHere has grown into a company with over 1000 employees and with clinics...

Ethos Church brings future missionaries to Lipscomb with new chapel

Nashville’s Ethos Church has created a program specifically designed to teach aspiring missionaries. The program – entitled “Onward” – is something of a discipleship training course, according to Ethos pastor and Onward Director Aaron Etheridge. “Onward exists to make disciples who will plant churches,” Etheridge said. “It is an immersive church-planter training experience run in partnership with Ethos Church.” Currently, the Nashville-based Onward program is providing church-planting and leadership training to 12 young men from around the world. “Onward is trying to develop and train leaders and we don’t just want to fill their heads with knowledge, but we also want to give them opportunities to develop as teachers because they’re going to teach a lot of people, no matter what,” said Onward Coordinator Joshua Solowey. In order to give Onward students an opportunity to hone their teaching skills, Lipscomb’s newest breakout chapel, “Onward Chapel,” is embarking on a new semester of lessons that will revolve around studying who Jesus is. “Last semester this chapel was all me and my friend Isaac so that was amazing,” Solowey said. “This semester is going to be even more awesome because our Onward people are going to be teaching now, starting with Chris.” Chris Malone was the first current Onward student to have the opportunity to teach at the Lipscomb breakout chapel this past Thursday. “Onward has definitely stretched me spiritually in ways I’ve never experienced before,” Malone said. “This weekly chapel is a major opportunity to grow and I’m just super thankful to Lipscomb for opening the doors for us like this.” Malone plans to plant churches in San Diego, California after...
