Stompfest aspires to take show to ‘The Next Level’

For the first time, Stompfest opened its doors to the public for the dress rehearsal of Tuesday night’s show. With teams such as ‘Varsity’ and ‘Strong Women,’ this year’s Stompfest is focused on taking the show to ‘The Next Level.’ “We wanted to raise the level of Stompfest,” Stompfest Director Ashleigh Majors said. “We’re trying to make the show grow and make it better.” Majors said putting together a night filled with dancing and music was not easy. “It was stressful at times,” Majors said. “I had to make sure everything was ready for the dress rehearsal and main show, and always had to be in contact with the different teams.” Majors added that it is rewarding to see hard work pay off in the end and watching the show is always her favorite part. This is the sixth year that Stompfest has been hosted by the social club Kappa Iota Theta. The social clubs participating this year are Delta Omega, Delta Sigma, Sigma Iota Delta, Phi Sigma, Phi Nu, Pi Delta and Theta Psi. Phi Beta Sigma from Tennessee State University is also taking part in the event. The main Stompfest show will be Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in Collins Alumni Auditorium. Photo by Erin...
Women’s basketball team opens season with loss

Women’s basketball team opens season with loss

The Lipscomb women’s basketball team suffered a 57-52 loss in their first match of the season against Loyola Maryland Friday night in Allen Arena. The Lady Bisons headed into the match having won both exhibition games. Lipscomb defeated Freed Hardeman 63-0 and dominated Young Harris 100-61. Both teams started off slowly as they struggled to score in the early stages of the game. The Lady Bisons found their rhythm and kept a lead through the first half. The Lady Bisons led the Greyhounds 34-33 with senior Ashley Southern scoring 15 points and a school-record 20 rebounds. Junior Alex Banks also finished the first half with nine points. Southern, who finished with a double-double, proved to be an important factor in the Lady Bisons success during the preseason. Southern was voted in the preseason Atlantic Sun All-Conference team by the league’s head coaches. Last season she finished second in the A-Sun for scoring. Loyola raised the level in the third quarter with nationally ranked Colleen Marshall getting some play-time. Bri Betz-White had 14 points for the Greyhounds and five rebounds. In the final minutes of play, the Lady Bisons lost composure and started to miss a lot of shots. Loyola capitalized on this and found their rhythm, winning the tightly contested affair 57-52. “We did not perform very well offensively, and didn’t put ourselves in position to win,” head coach Greg Brown said. Marshall finished with 12 points, while fellow Greyhound Betz-White had 23 points. “We have to get a little bit better everyday and come out there with a quick turn around,” Brown said. “I have a tremendous amount of confidence...
Lipscomb Global Learning students safe during Paris attacks

Lipscomb Global Learning students safe during Paris attacks

Story by Erin Turner, Becca Risley and Stephanie Schiraldi Updated at 11:59 p.m. Several of Lipscomb’s Global Learning students are currently in France, near where over 150 people have been reported dead after a series of apparent coordinated attacks across Paris. Eight attackers involved are dead. Lipscomb’s Global Learning students are safe and accounted for, according to Lipscomb University’s Facebook. But the students may be stuck there as President Francois Hollande has closed that nation’s borders as a response to the terrorist attacks. Police evacuated roughly 100 hostages held captive in the Bataclan concert venue Friday evening, the site of one of the attacks. Two men dressed in all black entered the concert hall. Upon entering, the men started firing what appeared to be AK-47s. French reporter Julien Pearce said the shootings occurred execution-style. During a soccer game at the Stade de France, a dismembered body was found at the scene, according to a Western intelligence source. This attack was reported as a suicide bombing. Additionally, attacks occurred at restaurants Le Petit Cambodge and La Belle Equipe, Avenue de la Republique and Rue de la Fontaine au Roi. “This is an attack not just on Paris, not just on the people in France, but an attack on all humanity and the universal values we share,” President Barack Obama said at the White House during a live press conference Friday evening. A few Lipscomb students in the London Global Learning program are currently spending the weekend right outside Paris, France. Lipscomb Assistant Vice President of Communication and Marketing Kim Chaudoin said the students are staying in a facility away from where Friday’s attacks took place....
Lipscomb makes quality fitness classes accessible for students and employees

Lipscomb makes quality fitness classes accessible for students and employees

Since 2008, group fitness classes led by certified instructors have been available to all Lipscomb students and employees. Today, Lipscomb’s group fitness program has evolved from providing just basic step, kickboxing and Pilates sessions to offering unique workout classes like Afro-Caribbean dance, yoga and pound. “In 2009, Campus Rec started offering Spin classes,” said Steffani Davis, Campus Recreation Graduate Assistant. “Also during 2009, the crazy class that we all know as Zumba was introduced to the Lipscomb campus. This new Latin-style of dance spiked a lot of interest in the student body.” Shortly after a separate Spin room was built in the Student Activities Center, Zumba classes began and participation in Lipscomb’s group fitness program saw a sharp increase. “In fall of 2011, the Spin studio was moved and converted into what is today’s Group Fitness room,” Davis said. “With the new amount of space came a new amount of classes, such hip-hop classes, yoga, sculpting, PiYo, and much more.” All of the classes offered are considered all-levels classes and are designed to cater to students at any skill-stage. Yoga Two styles of yoga are being offered at Lipscomb this semester: Iyengar and Baptiste. “Baptiste Power Yoga is a fun, strengthening, playful style of yoga that will get your heart pumping and bring a smile to your face,” said yogo instructor Gabriel Poe. “It incorporates everything from pushups and planks to the more traditional downward facing dog and tree poses that most people associate with yoga.” An Iyengar Yoga class is also offered, which is a slower, more meditative style of exercise. Pound Pound is a cardio-intensive work-out that integrates...
Enterprise CarShare service provides cheap, convenient ride for students

Enterprise CarShare service provides cheap, convenient ride for students

One of Lipscomb’s best-kept secrets could be saving students money and providing a helping hand for those without a car on campus. Parked in a reserved spot in front of the Burton Health Sciences Center is a Nissan Altima part of the Enterprise CarShare. Seniors Jaime Pawlitschek and Emily Walker are brand ambassadors for the service. They are both in charge of promoting the program and getting new members to sign up. “[The car share] has been on Lipscomb’s campus for the past four years, but nobody has known about it,” Pawlitschek said. “We only had five members, but since August we’re up to 24 members here.” The car share requires a one-time application fee of $20, but is available at a discounted price of one dollar until the end of December. After the application fee, an annual membership costs $50, but the price is waived for the first year. “Once you have a membership, you get a card and that allows you access into the car and then it’s five dollars [an hour] to rent the car,” Pawlitschek said. “The five dollars includes gas and insurance on the car, so if something were to happen, you’re covered.” The car can be reserved online or through the Enterprise CarShare app on a mobile device. Senior Amanda Newbold is an international student from the Bahamas. She first heard about the CarShare concept while visiting a friend at a university in Virginia that uses the program. “I saw that it was a really convenient and cheap way for [my friend in Virginia] to get around, so when I saw the flyers...
Lipscomb excels as an accessible campus

Lipscomb excels as an accessible campus

During January of 2012, I was just like every other high school senior — searching for the ideal college. I had already toured three colleges, but they just weren’t suitable for me. I knew that if I couldn’t navigate Lipscomb easily with my wheelchair and scooter, I was out of luck. My spirits were lifted once I saw this campus. It is mostly flat; the sidewalks are smooth and there are ramps everywhere. My college-searching prayers were answered and the campus has served me well throughout my time here. Fanning Hall Grade: A I stayed here my freshman year. Overall, Fanning is handicap-friendly. I had no trouble moving around. My only suggestion would be to add an elevator so those with a handicap could access each floor. I was lucky enough to have a friend help me get up the stairs. She would scoop me up and off we went. Johnson Hall Grade: A I’ve called Johnson home for the past three years and have loved every minute of it. The size of my room is just perfect for me; I have plenty of room for my bed, sofa and places to park my wheelchair and scooter while still having space to move comfortably. One of the best things about Johnson is the large elevator, which allows me to go visit all of my friends. The openness of Johnson allows me to go wherever I please without obstacles, which is very nice. Bennett Campus Center Grade: A – The moment that I saw the big ramp leading into the student center, I knew that I would be heading to Lipscomb in the fall. The...
