‘Lion King,’ ‘Frozen’ animators inspire future artists at animation seminar

Aspiring animators learned from the careers of veteran Disney animators during ProWeekend Animation and Illustration Weekend Artist Seminar on Saturday in Lipscomb’s Shamblin Theater. Headlining the event were three Disney animators, Tom Bancroft, Ruben Aquino and Claire Keane. Their experiences represented different periods of Disney animation as Bancroft and Aquino designed and animated characters from 1990’s films like The Lion King, Mulan and Beauty and the Beast, while Keane has worked on more recent films such as Tangled and Frozen. The event consisted of lectures by each of the three artists, a character design contest and a question-and-answer session with the artists. Attendees particularly enjoyed learning from the artists’ experiences. Gene Fayne enjoyed hearing how classic Disney characters evolved during the design process, but the most important part of his experience was being inspired by the artists’ success. “The biggest thing I’m taking away from it is to just be inspired and just continue to draw and practice, and hopefully I can get to where those guys are,” Fayne said. Lipscomb sophomore Elena Stewart said about her experience, “The most important thing I’ve learned about animation just this weekend is how important it is to do research and to tell a story.” Stewart is particularly excited about Bancroft’s new position as artist-in-residence at Lipscomb’s new animation department, a part of the College of Entertainment and the Arts. She has lofty ambitions for her career; her dream is to work at Pixar. “I can’t believe that I’m going to be working with Tom Bancroft. I just can’t wait to learn from someone who is so knowledgeable in the field. I...

Bisons earn third win in a row

The Lipscomb men’s soccer team won for the third time in a row Saturday night in a 3-1 victory over Longwood. This was a bye week for Lipscomb in terms of conference play, which offered the Bisons a chance to experiment with different strategies in preparation for the end of Atlantic Sun play. “I think a bye week is not a bad thing,” Bisons head coach Charles Morrow said. “For us it is an opportunity, you have questions arise halfway through the season, things you aren’t willing to risk in a conference game.” Morrow believes having the non-conference game scheduled allows them to try things that they cannot in a conference match during the season. “With the substitutions being the way they are it just doesn’t lend itself to try new things. Being able to try something new or switch personnel around in a bye week is good,” Morrow said. Lipscomb struck first in the match when freshman Jonathan Ramirez kicked in a left side goal off of a cross from fellow freshman Ivan Alvarado in the 38th minute. Just 15 minutes later, Lipscomb Junior Anthony Cedano scored his third goal of the season with a persistent play from the right side. Cedano was assisted by junior Josue Chavez. In the 54th minute, less than a minute after Cedano scored, Longwood was called for a foul in the Lipscomb box and senior Luke Gearin was able to capitalize on the penalty kick, tallying his eighth score of the season and putting lipscomb up 3-0. Longwood made it onto the board at 73:24 when Dan Campos took a free kick...

Lumination’s Gemikal Prude details Paint the Herd experience

Good music, the people I love and a reason to cause a mess and not have to worry about it. Lipscomb’s annual Paint the Herd was in full swing, and not just with the usual paint, but also glitter and zombies. This event allows students to come together and have a good time. Before even seeing the parking garage, where Paint the Herd was located, I could clearly hear blasting music. Before actually entering the “rave” area — covered in tarps from top to bottom — everyone was given a white paint suit. And upon entering, I was greeted by strobe lights, music that you couldn’t help but dance to and the most important component of the night: paint. “I look forward to Paint the Herd every year,” said senior Kenny Smith. “It’s definitely a tradition for myself and my friends.” You could tell that many others had that same mindset, and why wouldn’t they? This event occurs on the hill end of the semester, and allows students to have a break from strenuous studying for an evening. “It’s an amazing event,” said senior Joe Sanderson. “So fun. Glad I made the decision to finally go and get the opportunity to be carefree.” Paint the Herd was a hit, and will be something that will stick around for the long haul. Freshman Ravyn Rowlett said that it is something she will be looking forward to next year, and is sure that many others feel the same as well. Created with Admarket’s flickrSLiDR. Lady Bison soccer team comes up short on senior night

Senior night for the Lipscomb women’s soccer team did not go as planned as they were shut out by Northern Kentucky Friday. Lipscomb attempted more than twice as many shots as NKU, but in the end had nothing to show for it, resulting in a 2-0 loss. Prior to the game, the Lady Bisons honored their three seniors: Karli Crosby, Baylee Linnell and Brittany Rupple. With conference tournament implications on the line, the stakes were very high. NKU’s Aubrey Muench opened the score in the 30th minute to give the Norse a 1-0 lead, then scored again in the 49th minute to seal the win. The Purple and Gold finish the regular season with a 10-6-2 record overall and 4-2-1 in conference. As it stands now, the Lady Bisons will likely head into the Atlantic Sun Tournament as the No. 2 seed, and will have a first round bye before taking on the winner between the No. 3 seed Jacksonville and No. 6 seed Kennesaw State. The two weekend, single-elimination tournament begins next Saturday, Nov. 1, and will conclude Sunday, Nov. 9 at Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Meyers, Fla. Phi Sigma Date Auction provides fun, charitable night

90s singers, gods and goddesses and even Miley Cyrus were present on the Lipscomb University campus the night of Oct. 23. Phi Sigma hosted its 10th annual Phi Sigma Date Auction, and students were excited about the night. The event is hosted with a charity in mind, and this year the proceeds from the event went to Thistle Farms. Thistle Farms is a social enterprise group that is run by the women that stay in the Magdalene House. The women create natural body and bath products and sell them. They create products that are both good for the environment and for the people that use the products. “We were able to do a great thing for a great cause,” Sarah Robertson, the date auction director, said. Robertson was in charge of the event, and is very involved with the mission of Thistle Farms. Thistle Farms ultimate goal is to give women who are on the streets a second chance by providing a healthy place to stay and work. The money made on the products goes directly back to the women who made them. Thistle Farms products are now sold in over 200 stores around Tennessee. Phi Sigma puts on the date auction in hopes of raising money to help other women be added into Thistle Farms. They do so in a fun way, with each group dressing up in a different theme, and then members of the audience bid on the participants. “Date auction is fun because all of the social clubs come out and support,” Savannah Pickens, the host for the evening, said. “The process of being host...
