Delta Tau’s fight night uses good competition to support YES

The 2014 Delta Tau Fight Night in the Student Activities Center Thursday night once again displayed competitive matches and raised money for inner-city children.  The annual boxing competition benefits Youth Encouragement Services (YES) by charging $5 for entry. The program, operating in Nashville, offers a safe environment for low-income children to learn and grow. Delta Tau President Blake Mitchell said that the event raised over $1,500 for YES. He also explained the benefit of bringing the event to campus. “I think it’s an important event because it’s something different for Lipscomb,” Mitchell said. “It gets a lot of the student body together, especially the Greek life. It’s something that Lipscomb kids don’t get to see very often.” During the event, there were ten matches throughout the night. In the opening match, Ryan Hood of Delta Tau beat Daniel Hutchinson of Delta Nu. The second fight was a late submission, and it pitted independent James Weaver against independent Phillip Brodnax. Weaver won the match, and he said that he had never boxed before. “I just didn’t know what to expect, but I enjoyed it,” Weaver said. In the third match, Zach Clemens of Sigma Iota Delta defeated Ryan Matheny of Sigma Omega Sigma by technical knockout (TKO). Tau Phi’s first win of the night came from Brian Warf, who defeated Hunter Allison of Delta Nu. Andrew Jordan, a Sigma Iota Delta member, pulled out the victory over independent James Tamburello. Matt Clemens, another SID member, followed up Jordan’s victory with a win of his own. Clemens won by TKO over Caleb Janelle of SOS. A knockout came from the match...

Seth Carey elected in SGA VP runoff, Jamie Keiser voted as secretary

Seth Carey and Jamie Keiser have been elected to the vice president and secretary roles for the 2014-2015 school year respectively in SGA’s runoff elections held Thursday.Carey said he is happy his hard work has paid off. “It feels great,” Carey said. For his first actions in-office, Carey said he looks to continue the work of the incumbent officers, zeroing in on an initiative to place water stations on campus. “The first thing I’d want to look to do is to see what the executives had in place from last year and just to see, kind of,  what they want to continue and what they kind of hit a dead end on,” Carey said. “A big thing that we’ve been working on is water stations across campus, so that’s the first thing we definitely want to take a look at just to see if that’s still possible.” Wednesday, Drew Watson was voted SGA president, and Melissa Parrish was voted as treasurer. Bisons and Bears baseball teams battle for first place in A-Sun

The battle is on at Dugan Field this weekend as the Bison baseball team prepares for a rivalry game against the Bears of Mercer University. The Bison’s enter the weekend 10-2 in the conference which matches the Bears’ conference record of 10-2. The first place battle begins on Friday night at 6 p.m. and continues again on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Dugan Field. Bisons head coach Jeff Forehand is excited about the opportunity for his team, and says he wants this series to have record attendance. “Home is one thing, but having a crowd and support behind you is another,” Forehand said about the big weekend ahead. “We have good crowds most of the games, but this is one I just thought we could have a chance to break the record, get some people out there,” Forehand said. “It’s supposed to be a nice weekend, so [we’re] just challenging all the students to wherever they’re going to be, bring whatever you’re doing and bring it out to the field.” Mercer has been a well-coached team for several years now and is constantly flirting with the Top 25 polls. The Bisons, on the other hand, are 19-4 in their last 23 games, and Forehand says the practices this week have been the most intense that they have had all year. Forehand and his group know all about the positives that come from the momentum that comes with winning. “Anytime you can win a college game, its a big win because everybody works at it just as hard as you do,” Forehand said. “But as...

The credits will roll in Shamblin Theatre on Apr. 11-13 at 7:30 p.m. each night for the first ever Five-Minute Film Festival. The event is presented by the Film and Creative Media Graduate Program, and SGA is sponsoring the event, so students’ tickets are free. Faculty tickets are $10 and $15 for individuals. Mike Fernandez, chair of the department of theatre, explained why the film festival was created. “We just launched the Film and Creative Media Graduate Program, and it’s essentially a film school,” Fernandez said. “We felt like if we were going to have a film school that’s worth anything, we need to have a film festival.” The winner of the film festival will be decided by seven judges, who are from the “professional scene,” according to Fernandez. The winning film will receive a $500 grand prize and a spot in the Nashville Film Festival. Second place will win $250. The victor will be announced on the last day, Apr. 13. There were 14 submissions, 11 fiction and three documentaries, for the film festival. Fernandez said that all of them will show. “We’ve gotten some really creative pieces, and we’ve decided, at the film festival, we’re going to show all fourteen,” Fernandez said. The screen time for each night will last for one hour, and the showings are split into two acts. The first act consists of seven films, and the second act will show the remaining seven. Students, and anyone interested are encouraged to come. There will also be concessions served at the showings. “For [our] first year I think we’re off to a really good start,”...
