Dobson and Ford make memories at U.S. Olympic Volleyball tryouts

Bison volleyball players Lauren Ford and Jewell Dobson attended the U.S. Olympic Volleyball tryouts late last month and came home with memories and important lessons. The two juniors were selected to represent Lipscomb at the tryout and said the atmosphere was almost unreal. “It really didn’t hit me; it really didn’t set in with me until I walked in,” middle blocker Jewell Dobson said. The women said the tryouts were fast-paced and constant. Each session was two hours and consisted mostly of drills. “The style of play was just different. It was very intense. We were always running around playing [volleyball], so in a way that was fast paced,” Dobson said. “It seemed surreal to us that we were playing with the best of the best,”outside hitter Ford added. Through those drills, outside hitter Lauren Ford says she learned valuable lessons that she plans on taking into her senior year. “One thing I saw was just a passion from the defenders. They always had this ridiculous energy that you don’t normally see in a lot of defenders,” Ford said. She also explained that she wants to be more vocal with that passion as well. Dobson agreed saying she wants to carry that same passion into the aspects of her play and also highlighted the value of teamwork. “We both have more of this appreciation for our own team; more so than we even did before. The only way a team is great is if everyone’s connecting and working together,” Dobson said. Dobson and Ford also said that the presence of assistant coach Billy Ebel helped them stay comfortable at the...

Women’s golf team heads to Hawaii for tournament

The Lady Bisons golf team is taking its spring break getaway a week earlier than most students. The group is taking its third trip to Hawaii where they will play in the University of Hawaii’s Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational this week. “We [will] play The Klipper Course on the Kaneohe Marine Base on the island of Oahu,” said head coach Buddy Harston. The invitational will feature teams from the SEC, PAC 10, Big 10 and the Big 12. The team is looking forward to the nice weather Hawaii will provide. “Playing there with green grass and blue skies is going to be wonderful,” said sophomore Miriam Parker. While on the trip, Parker said she will focus on her time in the tournament while also enjoying the beauty of Hawaii. Senior MacKenzy Carter is looking forward to getting back to the tropical course. “We came last year and had so much fun, so getting to come back for my senior year is just icing on the cake,” Carter said. The Lady Bisons spent much of their offseason indoors due to the harsh winter. In their first spring outing, they placed fourth at the Time Warner Racer Classic hosted by Murray State. Parker was the top finisher for the Lady Bisons at the Time Warner Racer Classic. She finished at tenth overall with a score of 154 total. Besides participating in the University of Hawaii Donis Thompson Invitational, the team will take some time for sightseeing, including stops at the USS Arizona Memorial and the North Shore. “Golf is a different sport everyday, so we’ll just have to do our best...

Al Jazeera America correspondent Jonathan Martin shares advice with students at Media Masters

Al Jazeera America Nashville’s national correspondent Jonathan Martin likes the competition, creativity and spontaneity of his craft. “These three things really drive me to get up every morning and to work in news,” Martin said to a group of student communicators at Lipscomb University’s Media Masters event in Ezell. “Something is always going, always changing,” Martin said. “You’re competing against yourself. You’re competing against other stations and companies. I love that competition. “Second of all, I love the fact that there is creativity involved in this business,” he said. “You can make it your own. Finally, I think the spontaneity of things is really what drives me.” Growing up in Atlanta, Ga., Martin always knew he wanted to pursue a career in news. His passion started when he was only six or seven years old. “I always wanted to watch the news,” Martin said. “I was obsessed with the production, the anchors, the current events.” Martin began his career in the city of Augusta, Ga. Two years later, he got a call to be the morning anchor at WSMV Channel 4 in Nashville. From there, he was able to work his way up to a weekend anchor position. When he got the call to join Al Jazeera America’s Nashville bureau eight months ago, he said he was “all about it,” and has been working there for six months. Martin took some time to discuss the type of stories he gets to cover and showed a clip of one of his latest stories about undocumented immigrants qualifying for in-state tuition. “Today, I was covering another story at Vanderbilt Hospital and...

Lady Bisons take series against Florida Gulf Coast

The Lady Bisons softball team won its second conference series against Florida Gulf Coast University this weekend in Nashville at Draper Diamond. Saturday’s doubleheader was full of nail biting and clutch hitting for the Lady Bisons. Lipscomb won both games. FGCU scored one run in the first game off an RBI single from senior catcher Chelsea Zgrabik. Not much action happened again until the bottom of the fifth inning. Freshman infielder Mimi Cartwright singled to leadoff. Junior outfielder Brianne Welch reached on a fielder’s choice. Sophomore outfielder Brittany Elmore got a bunt single to load the bases. Junior infielder Paige Neely singled up the middle to score Mimi Cartwright and Welch to give Lipscomb the 2-1 lead. The Lady Eagles responded in the sixth scoring two runs off of senior infielder Brittney Garabedian’s single up the middle. Junior outfielder Kelsey Carpenter and freshman infielder Tori Van Camp scored to give FGCU the 3-2 lead. The Lady Bisons tied the game in the bottom of the inning off Elmore’s RBI single to center field. The Lady Eagles took the lead in the seventh after Garabedian hit a solo homerun. However, the Lady Bisons weren’t finished. Senior infielder Kelsey Cartwright knocked a solo homerun with one out to tie the game 4-4. With one runner on base, senior catcher/infielder Haley Elliott hits a pinch-hit home run to give the Lady Bisons a 6-4 victory in game one. Lipscomb senior pitcher Ashley Anderson went all seven innings giving up four runs on five hits while striking out five batters. In game two, Lipscomb got on the board first off an RBI single...

Jimmy Eugene, “The Heartstrings” and quartet of students share country music with campus

Four Lipscomb students took the stage Friday night and followed the footsteps of artists like Taylor Swift and Luke Bryan as they performed with local country artist and oral surgeon Jimmy Eugene in Shamblin Theater. Eugene’s band members “The Heartstrings,” or the “E. String Band,” are local musicians who have played with some of the best in the business. Leading off the night, Eugene agreed to let a few of Lipscomb’s talented artists steal the show before “The Heartstrings” took the stage. Jesse Taylor, a junior singer-songwriter at Lipscomb, started the evening off, followed by senior Kelly Dean, freshman David Austin Lowry and senior Lacy Printz respectively. They all performed one of their own original songs. “This was the first time I’ve played this song in front of people that I know, so I was a little nervous,” senior Kelly Dean said after her performance. “I was glad to have people I knew in the audience, though.” Eugene and “The Heartstrings” played several songs throughout the night, including a song Eugene wrote titled “West Bound Plane” about a young lady with cancer he met on a flight from Memphis to New Orleans. “Tonight when you’re going to bed, say a little prayer for that lady,” Jimmy said after performing his hit “West Bound Plane.” “I think about her often.” The night continued with the feel-good music from the band. During intermission, the artists from Lipscomb took the stage once more, only this time, playing covers from their favorite artists in the business while Eugene passed out t-shirts and CD’s. “The Heartstring” band took the stage one last time, singing...

Lady Bisons lose regular season finale to USC Upstate, trip to FGCU ahead for A-Sun tourney

It was a tale of two halves for the Lipscomb women’s basketball team Saturday at Allen Arena. After connecting on six 3-pointers in the first half, the Lady Bisons could not buy one in the second half, which resulted in a 91-71 loss to USC Upstate. The Purple and Gold kept pace with the Spartans for the majority of the first half, but a late 15-2 run for Upstate carried them to the finish. “I thought we played well the first 14 minutes,” head coach Greg Brown said. “But throughout the rest of the game, we did not match their physicalness or their intensity. With our size and depth, we can’t afford that.” It was evident that their lack of size became a problem as Upstate more than doubled their offensive rebounds and hauled in 20 more altogether. Redshirt sophomore guard, Danay Fothergill led all scorers with 21 points; however, it was not enough to slow down the Spartans. “We kind of changed our defense, they kept going downhill and getting threes,” Fothergill said. “They just kept getting offensive rebounds, and I think that’s what hurt us the most.” The Lady Bisons seemed to be very aggressive the whole game. They made several drives to the basket that resulted in 39 free-throw attempts, yet they could only account for 25. “We were trying to get to the foul line on offense, but we just couldn’t knock down those easy shots like we have been,” Fothergill added. Redshirt sophomore forward Ashley Southern was the only other Bison to score in double figures. She recorded 12 points and pulled down 11...
