The Lady Bisons have spent the last 265 days thinking about how their season ended short of their fourth straight Atlantic Sun Championship. This Lady Bisons team can’t wait for redemption. They are living this season by the team’s new motto, “Can’t Wait.” “After winning three championships in a row, we are in new territory this year with this idea of coming up short. ‘Can’t Wait’ came to me just in the sense of ‘I can’t wait to be with my teammates, can’t wait to practice, can’t wait to do weights, can’t wait to travel,’” said Coach Brandon Rosenthal. Last year was a different year for the Lady Bisons, as the team has claimed a seat in the NCAA tournament for four of the past six years. According to Rosenthal, there is something the team has to regain this season to get back to that level. “We have to get back that swagger. We had a tremendous year last year going 15-3 in conference, and then losing in the semi final. Some of the aura to playing us has diminished,” Rosenthal said. “There was a time we were untouchable. By no means is this a lesser team. I believe they need to find that swagger and believe in themselves.” “As a team we are definitely looking at winning the A-Sun,” said junior Lauren Ford. “Our main goal as a team is to win the Atlantic Sun conference and go farther into the NCAA tournament than we have before, which is past the first round.” Ford was one of three Lady Bisons named to the pre-season All-American team. Lipscomb’s first day enrollment numbers top over 4,500 students, which is an 81 percent increase in students from the last eight years.As Lipscomb began its 123rd academic year, more than 2,000 students have been added to the academic community since 2006, bringing this year’s record enrollment numbers to exactly 4,509. “To my wife and I, this is one of the most precious moments of the academic year,” Lipscomb President Randolph Lowry said at this year’s convocation ceremony. Lowry noted more Lipscomb accomplishments in his convocation presentation including the university’ record enrollment of 5,911 for the entire institution so far this year, a record 218 students expected to participate in global learning programs and 24 new university faculty members. Adding to the record enrollment are: Five new graduate programs including the Master of Education with an emphasis in collaborative professional learning, a Master of Business Administration concentration in strategic human resources, a master’s degree in software engineering and a Master of Film and Creative Media degree. Four new concentrations in the Education Specialist program. 148 nursing students, the largest enrollment in Lipscomb’s history. 695 freshmen. 553 Master of Education students and 73 Doctorate of Education students. 463 first-time graduate students. College Colors Day, a celebration of school spirit, will take place on Friday, August 30th, and universities across the nation, including Lipscomb, will be wearing their school colors to show their school pride. Many universities across the nation have participated in years past, but this year, the Lipscomb Alumni Association, Lipscomb Athletics and Lipscomb Dining services are partnering with the event to help students here at Lipscomb show school pride. Students are encouraged to wear a lot of purple and gold on and keep track of their school spirit on social media. Tag your photos during the day on the Lipscomb University Facebook page, or tag them on Twitter with handle, @Lipscomb. The Lipscomb bookstore is offering a 30% discount to anyone who wants to get some new Lipscomb attire to celebrate the day. You can download the coupon at www.lipscomb.edu. The year’s first Battle of the Boulevard is Friday night when the men’s soccer team takes on Belmont at 7 p.m. They’re offering free t-shirts and barbecue at the event. You can also decorate your own brick in Bison square to show your Bison spirit from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Friday. Free snow cones, cotton candy and other snack items will also be available at that time in Bison Square for anyone who wears their Lipscomb colors. Lipscomb’s Student Activities Board has been working hard this summer to create a full slate of events to entertain students during the fall semester, including some usual suspects and a concert with a noted local musician. Thanks to the partnership with SAB, SGA, Campus Ministry and Lipscomb Athletics, there is some sort of activities planned every day of the week throughout the fall. If you take a look at the schedule, you’ll recognize some of the main attractions that come up every year: the Dodgeball Tournament, Paint the Herd, and the Running of the Bison. In addition to the normal events, SAB added more events with the help of their on campus partnerships. SGA President Andrew Hunt has been working alongside SAB to create more events every week on campus. “Besides some new events, the only major difference for this semester is that we’re working a lot more closely with SAB,” Hunt said. “We hope that splitting the cost of events will help both of our budgets go further, so we will be able to have more, higher-quality events.” Local musician Dave Barnes will kick off Homecoming Week in concert on Oct.1 at 7 p.m. in Collins Alumni Auditorium. Director of Student Involvement Louis Nelms said he hopes that bringing in more musical talent can become a precedent for campus concerts. “I think live music makes everything better. University president Dr. Randy Lowry ushered in the new academic year with the annual Convocation Ceremony in Allen Arena on Tuesday. The event opened with a note of welcome from Dr. Jim Thomas, Executive Assistant to the President. Following his greeting, Board of Trustees member Harriet Shivers began the academic procession by carrying in Lipscomb’s traditional Mace, the wood of which was taken from an old oak tree that once stood on David Lipscomb’s original farm. Succeeding the presentation of the Mace, the parade of flags honored 100 nations and states represented within Lipscomb University and Academy. The Nashville Highlanders marched down the aisle next, playing customary tunes on bagpipes and drums. After recognizing and honoring the Lipscomb Board of Trustees, the Senior Leadership Team, the Academic Leadership Team, the University Faculty, the Academy Faculty, and the 17th president of Lipscomb, Dr. Lowry, Dr. Candice McQueen, Dean of the College of Education, gave a 4 minute keynote speech. Those in attendance enjoyed a time of worship, as well as scriptural reading from Jeremiah 29:11-13 before Lowry’s address. During his address, Lowry mentioned some noteworthy plans and hopes for Lipscomb University’s future. Such plans include the expansion of the McFarland Math and Science Center, the renovation of the Swang Business Center and the construction of a new Well-Being Center across from the School of Nursing building and a new Performing Arts Center for the theater department.
