Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013 marked Lipscomb University’s 4th annual kickball tournament that puts the residents of each dorm in friendly competition. The tournament created a fun and engaging way for freshman to get to know each other as well as the upperclassmen. Several students and families made it out to the intramural field for the majority of the day, despite the sweltering heat and stifling humidity. Many of the freshmen expressed their anticipation to be able to enjoy a day of hamburgers, fellowship, and friendly competition “I’m excited just to be playing with my friends,” freshman Christina Calandro said enthusiastically, “And I’ve already met a new friend, so I’m very excited.” A few changes were introduced to this year’s kickball tournament that made the whole experience slightly different from tournaments in years past. “Last year we had a group stage and then we had a playoff, but this year, rather than having the group stages, we just did one big single-elimination tournament so that everybody would come out and play their one game, and if they won, they would advance to the next game and whatnot,” Evan McGee tournament coordinator says, “And then we had a huge slip-n-slide at 2:00 this year, which was fantastic.” McGee went on to emphasize how smoothly this year’s tournament was run and how well it was organized. Wednesday morning, the Gospel Music Association announced the nominations for the 44th annual Dove Awards in the Hall of Fame room at Allen Arena. The Dove Awards will be hosted on Lipscomb’s campus in Allen Arena for the first time after spending two years in Atlanta. Lipscomb President Randy Lowry welcomed the awards to the university, emphasizing the importance of the event’s ultimate goal of spreading the Gospel. Mayor Karl Dean also offered some opening thoughts, welcoming the award show back to Nashville, its original home. Artists Mandisa, Dailey & Vincent and Jason Crabb were among those present to announce the nominations. Notable nominees included Francesca Battistelli, Lecrae, Tamela Mann, Chris Tomlin, Tasha Cobbs, TobyMac, NEEDTOBREATHE and Matt Redman. After an off-season full of change, including the hiring of Casey Alexander as the new head coach, the upcoming 2013-14 Lipscomb men’s basketball team officially has its first schedule of the Alexander era, with tilts against conference foes and local competition filling out the slate. Following an exhibition match against Freed-Hardeman on Halloween night, Lipscomb opens the season against arch-rival Belmont in the first Battle of the Boulevard at Allen Arena on Nov. 8. The second round will take place down the street on Nov. 20 at Belmont’s Curb Event Center. The Bisons will take the court against two other Nashville squads in November as well. The Nov. 15 game against Vanderbilt will be the first between the opponents since 2009, and the Nov. 18 matchup with Tennessee State will be the first meeting of the Bisons and Tigers in over a decade. Lipscomb’s first out-of state trip will lead to the program’s first game against perennial heavyweight Georgetown in Washington, D.C. over the Thanksgiving weekend. “That will be an exciting time for our guys to go to the nation’s capital and play a premier program,” Alexander told Lipscomb Athletics. “It will be a dream come true for J.J. Butler to go back home and play in front of his family. There are a lot of really exciting parts to that game to look forward to.
