Burger Up Review

Burger Up Review

Want to try a new restaurant that isn’t too far from campus? Look no further than a mile down 12th Avenue  and you’ll find Burger Up. Now, don’t get me wrong, burger places like Five Guys and Cheeseburger Charley’s are good, but sometimes it’s nice to switch it up and try something different. Burger Up is more than a big hunk of beef, though. The trendy restaurant also has something for the health conscious out there too, offering up turkey burgers and black bean burgers. One of the most enjoyable aspects of Burger Up is the homey atmosphere and friendly servers. You don’t feel out of place and uptight like you might would at some “classy” restaurants. This modern-rustic restaurant with exposed brick and wood cladding is the perfect setting for a date, business lunch or family dinner. The servers at Burger Up interested me because they all put off an artistic vibe and were rocking the “hipster” look. Most of them wore deep v-necks and skinny jeans, including my waitress, Natalie Bryd. “I moved from Alabama to Tennessee to pursue the music thing,” Bryd said. “Most people think we are all trying to be hipsters, but 80 percent of us that work here are musicians.” Now, let’s get to what really matters — the food. Even though Bryd has worked at Burger Up for 2 ½ years and suggested The Woodstock, the most popular burger, I ordered The Marathon with truffle fries. The Marathon is a quinoa and black bean burger topped with lettuce, tomato, red onion, and cilantro lime crème fraiche. The truffle fries are tossed in mushroom...

The Fanning Hall 90 day renovation is now complete

The Fanning Hall 90 day renovation is now complete, and ready for students to make Lipscomb their home away from home. “Fanning has been patched and modified over the years, and after seeing many issues continue to rise, the senior leadership team decided to completely renovate the dorm over the summer, said Michael C. Green, The Vice president for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer. Though the framework of Fanning Hall is still intact, it’s the oldest female dormitory on campus to have a complete makeover. “The was a decision made to spend this summer redoing every room, every suite, and all the different amenities that are a part of that complex to do a total face-lift,” said Green. Fanning was renovated as part of the university’s Lipscomb: Next campaign, celebrating its 125th anniversary as a Christian institution.  Construction crews and group leaders have been working around the clock to complete the project in three months – normally, it should take double or triple that time. “It was an operation that ran into the wee hours of the night and early morning,” said Green.  “They pretty much ran everyday on a 24-hour schedule in order to meet the time frame.” Fanning will have completely new furniture, outside railings, air conditioning units, improved wireless internet connection, study rooms, state of the art exercise room and even a volleyball court in the courtyard. All this will take take those renowned Fanning Luaus to a whole new level. “As far as technology, I think it’s going to be as up to date as any of the residence halls on campus, “said Green....

Bernice King speaks to and inspires the Nashville community

In his legendary “I Have A Dream” speech, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said he hoped one day his four little children would be judged by the content of their character.  Last week, a little piece of that dream was passed on to Lipscomb students by his daughter, Dr. Bernice A King.  Speaking in Allen Arena, King wanted to instill the values of her father – mentorship, role modeling and equipping the next generation for greatness – into those in the audience. “How many young people were able to soar and step into greatness because you took the time to make a difference?” King asked. Following in her father’s footsteps, King has become a renowned speaker and an ordained minister.  She spoke at LU as part of the Youth Life Foundation of Tennessee’s (YLFT) Women and Girls Benefit Luncheon.  Girls from the Youth Life program were in attendance, but the event also attracted some of the state’s most prominent women, including the governor’s wife, Crissy Haslam; and Nashville mayor Karl Dean’s wife, Anne Davis. The next generation needs advocates, King said. “We have to look out for them and make a commitment.” “They want to know your struggles and that you have made mistakes too. Realness is what opens up their hearts.” Children who participate in mentorship programs like YLTF excel in school and are less likely to turn to criminal activity.  Of course, mentoring these children does require a  commitment, but King insisted it doesn’t take a lot of time to impact a child’s life. “It’s not the quantity of time, but the quality of time.” According to...

Titans’ Front Office working Relentlessly

Are you ready for some football? If not, get ready, because the NFL has rocketed back from the lull that was the NFL lockout. Just like the 80s movie, Spinal Tap, the NFL has turned it up to 11 and will not be looking in the rear-view mirror anytime soon. In fact, last week set a record for the most NFL transactions (players cut/signed/traded) ever recorded in one week, and the Tennessee Titans certainly accounted for many, posting 51. For the last several years, the Tennessee Titans’ front office has been beleaguered by claims that they act too slow and are inefficient when it comes to off-season activity. Fortunately, General Manager Mike Reinfeldt and his staff rose to the occasion and brought in several additions to offense and defense, all while doing a little housekeeping in the process. The week began with the Titans signing Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck to a three-year, $21 million offer. This will provide the Titans with a veteran quarterback ready to play immediately, leaving rookie Jake Locker a chance to refine his game for the foreseeable future. Following the signing of Hasselbeck, the Titans cut two players who have been staples of the franchise for the last several years. Vince Young, the troubled but talented third-overall choice from the 2006 NFL Draft, was cut after alienating himself from the team and front office. Defensive Tackle Tony Brown, who signed a three-year contract last offseason, was cut after being placed on injured reserve last season. Following the cuts were a slew of signings that included inking the entire Titans’ draft class to four-year contracts, as well as the...

Lipscomb Dems plan to re-emerge on campus this semester

On the day after an agreement has finally been reached to extend the federal debt ceiling, both Republicans and Democrats can rejoice the government has avoided a possible default. While congressional approval is still required, America has seen bipartisanship win once again. And bipartisanship is exactly what Thomas Whisenant wants on Lipscomb’s campus. Resurrecting the Lipscomb Democrats club, Whisenant is ready to give democratic students a louder voice on campus. “I felt like there was an absence on campus for students with a more democratic political view,” Whisenant said. “Being a student who is a democrat, it is nice to have a group of people there to get your voice heard.” It’s not just about promoting democratic views for Whisenant, though. While that is high on the list, there are more important things. “We want to present to people that politics are not a bad thing,” he said. “Politics is something that we need to be involved in. Just because Washington seems hostile and difficult doesn’t mean they have to be here [on campus].” As far as the group’s formation goes, this is not something new. For those that are seniors this year, you may remember the 2008 election. During that time and during the campaign, there were groups for Republicans and Democrats. However, since then, both groups have disappeared. With the reformation of Lipscomb Dems, Whisenant hopes to reach out to different groups and help the community at the same time. “I think that it’s important that we make sure that Lipscomb comes before the Democrats,” Whisenant said. “We want to be a group that gives back and...

Lipsomb in London: An Update from over the Pond

As part of an effort to recruit more students from David Lipscomb High School to Lipscomb University, the university offered a trip to London for any DLHS senior who chose to attend college at Lipscomb. The eight-day trip departed July 23 and will return July 31. Students are staying in the dormitories of the century-old Imperial College London, and as part of the trip, each new Bison will receive a three-hour humanities credit. This first-time program is part of an ever-expanding international curriculum Lipscomb has put together in order to broaden the cultural, communication, arts and business minds of students. Led by Randy Lowry, president of Lipscomb University; and Mike Fernandez, chair of theatre Department; students will be immersed into British culture through theatrical performances, religious services and local cuisine, among other activities. Students will witness the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, a trip to Oxford University, a workshop at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and a visit to the Houses of Parliament. Students will even have the opportunity to experience a local worship service with the All Soul’s Church and will be greeted each morning with a full English breakfast. Near the end of the week, students will have a chance to travel in groups to either Windsor Castle, the Natural History Museum, Tate’s Modern Art Museum or Cotswolds – the birthplace of Shakespeare. “We are having a great time in London,” said Mike Fernandez via email. “We have been many places and talked with some great people.Among them Dr. Michael Ward, considered to be a preeminent C.S. Lewis scholar.” “British people have been very receptive,” Fernandez said....
