Student athletes excel on the field, in the classroom

Student athletes excel on the field, in the classroom

For the first time, Lipscomb University proudly received the Atlantic Sun Conference All-Academic Trophy in 2010 with 185 of the 258 Bison student-athletes achieving All-Academic honors. Frank Bennett, now entering his thirty-first season as head coach of the Lady Bisons Basketball team, likes to believe that his players define the term student-athlete. “Some people think it’s one or the other—academics or athletics—but I believe they go hand in hand,” Bennett said. The Lady Bisons are an example of the success that Lipscomb sports teams are having on an individual and team level, competing in the classroom as well as on the court. This past season, the Lady Bisons ranked ninth in the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Top 25 Team Honor Roll with a 3.452 average GPA. The retention rate is also impressive.  Every student-athlete who completes their fourth year of eligibility graduates. It’s important to realize that academic success has not been limited to the basketball court. Lipscomb proudly had seven spring teams with at least 70 percent of the student-athletes achieving a 3.0 grade-point average or higher , earning the All-Academic trophy. To what does Lipscomb owe the successes of its sports teams? “It begins with recruiting good students,” Bennett said. “And we try to emphasize an attitude of excellence.” Athletic Director Philip Hutcheson likes to refer to the athletic department as the “front porch” of the University. “There are many people on campus excelling as students and achieving great things without any public recognition,” Hutcheson said. “Whether right or wrong, athletes are the ones receiving public attention.” Hutcheson went on to talk not only about academics,...

Lake Lipscomb pond, fountain under construction behind Ken Dugan field

Wondering what the construction behind the baseball field is for? Are you hoping it’s more on-campus parking? Well go ahead and let those hopes down, because Lipscomb is transforming the area into a pond with a fountain to enhance the look of the university. “I do a lot of visiting to campuses across the nation, and I noticed that a lot of campuses have water features, and we have a lack of water features on campus. So I told Dr. Lowry that I thought that it would make a great pond,” said Tom Wood, Director of Campus Enhancement. Walkways, picnic tables, an iron fence and landscaping will eventually be added around the pond to create a child-friendly environment open to the surrounding neighborhoods. The fountain will shoot 30 feet in the air, and administration is discussing whether or not to add fish. “It will be a nice gathering area for students and neighbors,” Wood said. “It will be a great enhancement to the university, so I think it’s something that we will be very pleased with.” The area is not officially named yet, but Wood suggests  holding a contest and letting students submit name ideas. “Right now I call it Lake Lipscomb, but maybe we should let the students decide,” Wood said. The pond will still meet 100 year flood levels, so Granny White will not be flooded if a heavy rain comes. Phase two of this construction will be adding a combined fountain and baptistry to the middle of Bison Square. Wood is hoping to break ground  by next summer. Students have been very vocal about what enhancements...
Lipscomb receives $1 million gift to endow chair in piano

Lipscomb receives $1 million gift to endow chair in piano

NASHVILLE (Oct. 4, 2010)–Jerome Reed, professor of music at Lipscomb University, has been named recipient of a newly endowed faculty chair, the Patricia and Rodes Hart Chair in Piano, President L. Randolph Lowry announced. The Patricia and Rodes Hart Chair in Piano was made possible by a $1 million gift from Nashville businessman Rodes Hart. “I wanted to give this gift because I am so amazed by the skill and ability of Jerry Reed, who is my piano teacher. I wanted to do something significant for him and for the department. I didn’t really know very much about Lipscomb University until I met him. I wanted to do something to support piano teaching specifically because of what he has done for me,” said Hart. “We believe strongly that supporting music and the arts is important in a well-rounded cultural city like Nashville.” “This generous gift from the Harts, creating an endowed chair, provides many opportunities for Lipscomb’s music faculty and students. The Harts’ passion for music, in particular piano, is being magnificently translated into a legacy in music education. It is fitting that Professor Reed, whose skills are internationally recognized, be the first to fill this chair,” said Lowry. Reed and Hart developed a friendship last year when Reed assisted Hart in selecting a Steinway for his office. Reed began to give Hart piano lessons during the summer, which quickly sparked a close friendship. Today, Reed goes to Hart’s Brentwood office once a week to conduct a piano lesson. The two share a passion for the piano and the arts. Hart and his wife, Patricia, and Reed and his...

Lipscomb students’ service hours among highest in nation

Lipscomb University ranks as Nashville’s highest in the state in Washington Monthly rankings of master’s universities Amount of student service hours ranked third in nation NASHVILLE (Sept. 30, 2010) – Lipscomb University has been ranked 65th in the nation, by Washington Monthly in its master’s universities category, the only Nashville master’s category university to make the top 100. Washington Monthly is a magazine that established its own ranking system six years ago as an alternative to the well-knownU.S. News and World Reports rankings.  The Washington Monthly rankings were designed specifically to measure how a university gives back to its community through providing social mobility to low-income students, providing volunteer service and research advancements. The 2010 rankings were reported in the September/October issue of Washington Monthly, now on newsstands, and Lipscomb’s rank can be found on the publication’s Website at: http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/college_guide/rankings_2010/masters_universities_rank.php. More than 550 universities across the nation were included in the master’s-level listing. The Washington Monthly rankings consider the percentage of students receiving Pell grants; research expenditures; the number of students who go on to earn Ph.D.s, apply to the Peace Corps or participate in ROTC; and the number of community service hours carried out by students and full-time staff to develop a ranking that shows “what our colleges are doing for our country.” Lipscomb’s high ranking was due in large part to the university’s large number of student service hours, which Washington Monthly ranked as the third highest in the nation in the master’s category. The number of hours was taken from Lipscomb’s application to the President’s Community Service Honor Roll, which reported 121,910 in student service hours in the 2008-09 school year. “The...
