California man predicts the world’s end… again

Worrying about finals? While they’re fast approaching, a religious group from California doesn’t think you should lose sleep over the end-of-semester tests, because the world is ending in less than a month. What’s that? You thought the world was supposed to end in 2012 like the History Channel and Nostradamus claimed? Well, there is a new group of people telling us that we are all wrong. The group WeCanKnow based out of California claims that “He will close the door on salvation on May 21, 2011, when He returns to take his elect children to heaven.” Harold Camping, founder of Family Radio Inc., made the prediction, and fans of the radio station paid for billboards that can be seen around Nashville and other cities. Their goal is simple– with the message “He is coming again!” nonbelievers are to change their ways and follow. According to Camping’s prediction, the second coming will occur exactly 7000 years between Noah’s flood and the rapture. Camping claims Noah’s flood happened in 4990 B.C., on May 21 in the modern calendar. God supposedly gave Noah one week of warning before the flood. And, stretching the made-up calculations even further, Camping says that one day equals a thousand years for God. So this obviously means that 7,000 years needed to pass between the flood and the rapture. And so, through the magic of improvable dates, algorithms and calculations, Jesus will come again on May 21, 2011, according to Camping. “We hope that anyone would get a Bible out and try and prove that this is wrong,” Camping said. Before I do that, I’ll tell you this. Camping predicted...

Virago offers food to satisfy any palate

Variety is a must for some, while picky eaters just want simple food and still others declare bold taste and robust flavor choices a necessity. At Virago, those concerns are a thing of the past. Their entrees range from every roll combination you can image for sushi lovers to shrimp egg rolls, fried wontons, edamame, new-style sashimi and even Thai lobster shooters for those with slightly more exotic taste buds. For the manly men or less exotic eaters out there, they serve hearty filet mignon, pork in lemon butter sauce, Wagyu Sirloin and “angry chicken” (which is grilled chicken with a little kick over coconut rice). Seafood lovers, Virago hasn’t forgotten about you. They offer Scottish salmon, truffle sea bass, crab and shrimp dumplings, king crab legs, wild-caught prawn and blackened Ahi, just to name a few items. One of Virago’s signature dishes is a sushi roll entitled “The Bomb.” With a title like that, what should you expect? I’ll lay it out for you. “The Bomb” consists of tempura shrimp, avocado and asparagus on the inside, baked jumbo lump crab and spicy mayo on top and a touch of unagi sauce and scallions. Yum Yum! Although “The Bomb” did sound delicious, “Yum Yum” is actually the next roll I’m going to touch on. The “Yum Yum” is a crispy tempura roll with tuna, smoked salmon, cream cheese and ponzu. I could go on and on about Virago’s never-ending, delectable menu all day long. Virago’s has two locations in Nashville. One is located in the Gulch on McGavock Street and the other is downtown on Division Street. The atmosphere...

International soccer makes appearance in Music City

Tuesday, March 29, 2010 is a date I will always remember. I won’t remember it for the weather, my classes, or for the Singarama practice I missed—I’ll remember it for being the day that I attended my first international soccer match. The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) played Paraguay on Tuesday at LP Field, and I was lucky enough to get a ticket and go with seven of my good friends who love both soccer and America. We ordered our tickets on the pre-sale, so our seats were pretty good—12 rows up around midfield—and we had been looking forward to the match for months. On game day, Trey Weatherly, Taylor Ezell, Casey Boyer, Drew Lewis, Alexander McMeen, Bryce Davidson, Garrett Crothers and I all met up outside of High Rise (wearing almost every scrap of USA apparel we owned) to head to McDougal’s for a little pre-game chicken. After filling up, we headed out to LP Field and joined the masses of red, white, and blue just before kickoff. Before I even entered the stadium I knew that this sporting event would have a different atmosphere from the Braves and Titans games I was used to attending. Never have I seen so many crazy costumes for a professional sporting event. Normally, you would just see people wearing a team jersey, shirt or jacket. Here, there were shirts, jerseys, shorts, pants, flags, bandanas and scarves galore proudly displaying the red, white and blue. Like I said before, our seats were fantastic. You could hear the players shouting and the ball hitting against them. It was incredible. The fans around...

Monell’s Southern home cooking is to die for

Are you looking for a restaurant to experience a great, southern home-cooked meal? Look no further, because Monell’s is the best spot in town for a delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner. The restaurant serves their multiple-course, made-from-scratch meals family-style, bringing all the food to the table in large bowls to pass around the table. As good as the food is, washing it down with their incredible sweet tea might be the best part of the whole meal. I went to Monell’s for dinner with my mother for the first time, and it was so impressive. My mother told me about the restaurant many times before, but I was a bit turned off by the family-style seating that I decided it wasn’t really for me. Finally, after months of my mother ranting and raving about the fried chicken, I just had to try it–and I am certainly glad I did. As soon as I entered the restaurant we were seated promptly and I was astounded by the tempting chocolate pie that was placed at the table right in front of me as soon as we sat down to eat. After quickly being seated, dinner was served within minutes. Not knowing what to expect I was taken away by the constant replenishing of all the food — from cucumber salad to the roasted potatoes, corn pudding, green beans, apples, fried chicken, meatloaf, chicken and dumplings, corn on the cob, topped off by the homemade biscuits and cornbread with peach preserves. So much food was brought out, I lost count of all the dishes! All I can say is everything was seasoned...

Rango, created using “E-motion Capture,” outdoes most animated movies

Despite the fact it’s an animated movie, this one stands alone, far from the rest. Rango. Where do I begin? Well, I can say it breaks a lot of typical boundaries you think would come with being an animated film. Rango is not by any means a “kid’s” movie. It is mature, and children will not be able to understand a lot of things in this film. I’ll tell you right now not to take your kids to go see it, unless you want to do a lot of explaining during or after watching. Okay, since I got that out of the way, I can now start my review. Holy guacomole! Rango was FANTASTIC! Ahem, excuse me, I could not find any other way to express how great it really is. It has everything. Not only is this a great animated film, but it could stand alone as a great western. A colorful cast did something for this film that no other animated film (as far as I know) before it has done. Rather than just stand in a booth and record audio, they actually acted out the scenes. Johnny Depp (the oice of Rango) himself said, “Instead of motion capture, it’s E-motion Capture, using the actors as a reference for the motion of the animated character.” And that really must have helped. Because it gave Rango zest that I haven’t seen in an animated film before. Rango is unique; it has a great way of telling the story. The narrative by itself could have been a book, but having such great visual aids made it even better. Rango is the story of...

From engagement to wedding: Lipscomb couples’ concerns addressed

You’re engaged. Now what? With the dozens of engagements that have happened and are happening around campus lately (are we in Searcy?), plenty of Nashville venues and vendors are being snatched up for dates this summer. Here are some things you should make first priority when it comes to planning your big day. First things first– decide on a date and a budget. You need to agree on who is going to pay for what, and how much you are willing to spend. The planning process will run much more smoothly if you know what vendors you should and should not be considering. The guest list should come next. You need to know how many people you need to fit into a venue and feed, right? Juniors Miriam Harding and Hayden Parish got engaged on top of Mt. Sinai during the Bible travel course offered over Christmas break. “I feel like what’s difficult for one couple can be totally different for another in planning a wedding,” Harding said. “For Hayden and me, it’s just setting a date. We have to work around our living situation for next year. It is frustrating in the sense that I could either have a year and a half to plan, or seven months, and I don’t know which.” If you are already overwhelmed with all the big decisions that you need to make, consider hiring a wedding coordinator or planner to help things run smoothly. Simply Stunning Events is one of Nashville’s top-notch and most affordable planning companies. If you can’t afford a planner, Studio Wed offers free vendor search services. They consider...
