In the 135th iteration of the Battle of the Boulevard, the Bisons lost to their same-street rival Belmont for the sixth consecutive time 87-62. Sophomore Josh Williams was one of the few bright spots for the Bisons. He scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds. The Bruins started off the game scorching with a pair of quick baskets from Junior Craig Bradshaw and Senior Reece Chamberlain in front of the raucous Lipscomb crowd. The baskets helped spark a 19-5 to begin the game for Belmont. By the halfway point of the first half, the Bisons cut the lead down to single digits, 24-16 thanks to the trio of senior Martin Smith, sophomore J.C. Hampton and Williams. In what was a game of streaks, the Bruins responded with another hot streak of their own. Belmont held a commanding 40-26 lead with less than three minutes left to play before halftime. “When we go on a run, it just takes one simple thing like a missed rotation or a breakdown just to stop the run,” Smith said, “We just got to get the little things right.” Smith scored surpassed 1,000 points for his career on the night, joining his brother Malcolm who surpassed the milestone in the 2014 Atlantic Sun Tournament. “It feels pretty good, wish we could’ve got the win though.” Smith said. The Lady Bison basketball team opened up the 2014-2015 season with one win and one loss. Lipscomb earned their first win of the season in the season opener against Georgia Southern. The Lady Bisons won 80-74 Nov. 14 in Allen Arena. Senior guard Sara Bliss led the way for Lipscomb with 22 points. Redshirt junior guard Danay Fothergill added 17 points, and redshirt junior forward Ashley Southern scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Lipscomb shot 46 percent from the field and 47 percent behind the three-point line. Freshmen guards Kennedy Potts and Emily Eubank made their first collegiate starts for Lipscomb. Back in action in Allen Arena on Nov. 16, Lipscomb fell 79-66 to Wright State. Fothergill led all Lipscomb scorers with 19. Bliss scored 13. Turnovers were costly for the Lady Bisons. On a day that saw the Lipscomb men’s and women’s basketball, men’s soccer and volleyball teams all play home games, the Bisons almost finished the marathon undefeated. The men’s basketball team provided the nightcap for the day, taking down Berry College 91-70 in their season opener. Head coach Casey Alexander played everyone on the roster early and often, including the four freshmen and one transfer new to the team. Even with usual starter Malcolm Smith not dressing out, the Bisons had more than enough players to go around. “We went into the game with the intention of giving everybody as many minutes as we could and spreading those out, and we were able to stick with it” Alexander said, “it wasn’t nearly as pretty as we wanted it to be, but that [the subbing strategy] was by design.” With many players subbing in and out throughout the game, the Bisons were able to keep fresh bodies in the game constantly in an effort to keep their pace at a high level. Lipscomb was forcing turnovers and scoring off of fast breaks all night, especially during an 11-5 run to start the second half. Berry College was never able to recover from the Bisons run to begin the first half. Lipscomb continued to push the ball, and the quick pace resulted in two big breakaway dunks from Josh Williams, the night’s leading scorer with 32 points on 9-15 shooting. Another year, another successful season for the Men’s and Women’s Cross Country programs. The Women scored 21 points in the Atlantic Sun Championships to secure their fourth consecutive conference title. Madi Talbert, Paige Stoner, and Dani Walker swept the top three spots, taking first, second and third respectively. All three runners, along with Sally Larson who finished sixth overall, earned spots on the A-Sun All-Conference First Team. Stoner was also named A-Sun Freshman of the Year. Barbara Lee Ball, Kayla Montgomery and Minna Fields took spots on the All-Conference Second Team. Ball and Montgomery finished ninth and 13th in the A-Sun Championship. The Men’s team also had a stand-out day in route to winning their second A-Sun Championship in a row. Juan Gonzalez, Daniel Gardner and Christian Freeman took third, fourth and fifth place in the competition. All three also placed on the A-Sun All-Conference First Team. The Bisons fourth and fifth runners, junior Jared Wingerter and sophomore Jared Daedler, both set personal records in route to finshing ninth and 15th overall. Wingerter earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team. “Jared Wingadner had a great race,” head coach Benton Reed said. “He passed two Northern Kentucky guys in the end with an awesome finish. I knew Jared Dadeler was going to have a good race because he just kept on moving up throughout the race and by the end he was where he needed to be and it really made the difference for the team. The Lady Bisons soccer team just completed a record-breaking regular season, and look to take the season even further this weekend. The team finished regular season play Friday Oct. 24 against Northern Kentucky. The game ended in a 2-0 loss, but the team finished with a 10-6-2 overall record, and the no. 2 spot going into the conference tournament. This 2014 season is the first season the Lipscomb women’s team has had a winning record. The Lady Bisons have also only made it into the tournament one other year, and that was last year. A change in coaching staff back in the spring of 2012 is a huge part of the program’s turnaround. Junior Emily Shuler was recruited to Lipscomb before the coaching change, and said she would have looked elsewhere had she been aware of the programs record, but she is thrilled with the change. “When I looked at Lipscomb’s website for them to come watch [me play], I remember their record was like, two wins, maybe. I was like, what am I doing, like why did I ask them to come, and it ended up being awesome,” Shuler said. “Now we’re at a place where we’ve got five times that for wins if not more.” Senior Karli Crosby played on the team before head coach Kevin O’Brien was hired, and she has seen first hand how much of a difference he has made. “We’ve gotten better every single year ever since OB (O’Brien) got here.
