The Lipscomb Lady Bisons fell to the Mercer Bears Saturday night 72-79, but topped the Atlantic Sun season record for individual player points. With the Lady Bisons playing with a limited roster for the night, redshirt sophomore Danay Fothergill topped her career high and set the new A-Sun season record at 34 for most points scored in a game. Four of the Lady Bisons saw over 37 minutes of play: Fothergill, redshirt sophomore Ashley Southern, junior Sara Bliss, and sophomore Kelli Smith. “Some of us had to play all 40 minutes, and that’s fine, but we just had to do what we had to do to get the win,” Fothergill said. The first half of the game saw six lead-changes and four turnovers per team. Although Mercer came out more aggressive in the beginning with 7 personal fouls, the teams were neck-in-neck at the half with the score at 37-38 Mercer. At the close of the second half, the Lady Bisons were within 3 points of the Bears with 9 seconds to go in the game. Strategic fouling sent Fothergill out of the game with her fifth foul and the Bears secured their win as junior Precious Bridges sunk both her free throws. Southern collected her eleventh double-double and was joined by Fothergill and Smith with points in the double digits. Mercer junior Teanna Robinson had six shot-blocks on the night and gave Lipscomb freshman Faith LeGate a challenging night at the post. LeGate, a starter for the Lady Bisons against Mercer, pulled down eleven rebounds against the 6’5″‘ build of Robinson. LeGate says she came into the game...

A battle took place tonight in Allen Arena as the Lady Bisons returned home to take on Kennesaw State University after being away during the Christmas break. The Lipscomb Women’s Basketball team is 0-3 in conference after tonight’s 82-78 loss to KSU. Kennesaw scored the first points of the game, but did not regain the lead until the 11 minute mark in the first half. After that point in the game, the Lady Bisons struggled both offensively and defensively. At the half, the Owls led 45-36. Lady Bison Assistant Coach John Wild said the team needed to change some aspects of the game to be successful in the second half. “We’re doing a bad job defensively just being active,” Wild said. “I think if we can get some touches and deflections and that sort of thing, it may take them out of rhythm.” The Lady Bisons had a shooting percentage in the high 60’s during the first half, but went downhill during the second half. As the first half wore on, Lipscomb struggled with rebounds and down low in the paint. One of the Lady Bison’s strongest players, forward Ashley Southern, had a hard time in the second half getting beat down low. The Lady Bisons did not give up and fought back for a lead. Redshirt Sophomore Danay Fothergill played in her first home game tonight and made herself known. Fothergill fouled out of the game at the end of the second half after scoring 18 points and winning seven rebounds. While most of Lipscomb’s campus had their scarves bundled around their necks to stay warm in Monday’s frigid weather, the men’s basketball team was neck-and-neck with the Jacksonville University Dolphins on Monday night in Allen Arena. The Bisons fell to the Dolphins in the closing seconds to lose 88-85. Redshirt freshman point guard J.C. Hampton’s three point attempt was tipped and misdirected, and time ran out as the teams chased the rebound. Although Lipscomb came up short, three players for the Bisons scored in the double digits. Freshman Josh Williams had his first career start on Monday. The guard from Jackson, Miss., scored 28 points to lead the team and collected nine rebounds. “It was a great honor to start. I just took the opportunity to step up and do what the team needed,” said Williams, who went 50-percent from the arc and made all of his free throws. Hampton put up 19 points, and sophomore guard J.J. Butler rounded out the double-digit scoring with 13 points. Jacksonville’s field shooting led them to victory, knocking down 15-for-25 in the second half while the Bisons shot 15-for-32. The Bisons and Dolphins also combined for 27 total turnovers for the game. Jacksonville took advantage of the Bisons’ turnovers, scoring 16 points from the changes in possession. In the Lipscomb men’s basketball team’s first game back in Allen Arena Saturday since their early December win over Tennessee Tech, the Bisons, now in conference play, kept it close with the visiting North Florida Ospreys, but despite a late run by Lipscomb, the Ospreys left victorious, 78-73. The Bisons are still searching for their first Atlantic-Sun win of the season. A staunch first half gave no wiggle room for either team to gain any momentum, with junior twins Martin and Malcolm Smith turning in strong efforts for the Bisons. North Florida led by one at the half. In the second half, the power struggle continued until North Florida went on a 10-0 run at 6:07 to take the game’s first commanding lead, 68-58, at 3:31 to go. The Bisons fought back with a flurry of baskets, narrowing the Osprey’s lead to two with the score sitting at 73-71 with a little over 30 seconds to go. However, the Ospreys held on for the win. Martin Smith led the Bisons in points with 20, with Malcolm Smith not too far behind with 18 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Josh Williams had 13 points and seven rebounds. When asked about the back-and-forth nature of the game, Martin Smith referenced the two different runs that each team went on. “You know, basketball is a game of runs,” Smith said. “We’ve just got to stick with what we’re doing.” Looking ahead to a quick turnaround for Monday’s game at home against fellow A-Sun member Jacksonville, Martin Smith says that consistency will be a key for success. “Our effort was there.
