By Sophie Kellerman and Aaron Schmelzer Memories filled Allen Arena on Sunday afternoon as the Lipscomb community celebrated the life of fan Chuck Ross. Ross passed away earlier this month at the age of 68, leaving behind a legacy of support for local sports. Through his fandom, Ross impacted the lives of the many, with a large group of local journalists, sporting figures and former Bisons lending their time to share a funny story and kind word about Ross. “Chuck was the roots that connected so many people and communities,” said Athletic Director Philip Hutcheson as he opened up the memorial. Orioles manager Buck Showalter, ESPN analyst Buster Olney and Voice for the Nashville Predators Pete Weber were among the multitude of people who recorded short anecdotes and well wishes that were shown throughout the service. Jonathan Seamon interviewed former Bisons basketball players Alan Banks, Richard Taylor, Chris Martello, Greg Glenn and Keith Edwards about their experiences with Ross. “I thought Chuck was somebody that we were doing something for,” Taylor said. “The reality is, as time passed, it was exactly the opposite. Chuck was such a role model for all of us.” “Describe Chuck in one word,” Seamon asked the former Bisons. None of them had to think about their answers very long. Laughter, compassion and unconditional love were just a few of the words that came to mind. Ross was not only a fan of the university sports. He also loved going to the Lipscomb Academy high school games and helping out any way he could. “For high school football games, Chuck’s job was to call and...

Not many students can say they are playing a varsity sport in college, and very few can say that they are playing two. However, Viktoria Bjork is one who can claim this title. Bjork originally came to Lipscomb to play tennis, but with a change that was made in her high school years, she is ineligible for her first year. “I’m not allowed to compete for my first year in tennis because I’m 20 years old, and they have a rule against that,” she explained. Bjork plays women’s tennis and women’s golf at Lipscomb. “I’m allowed to compete in golf because they don’t have a rule against my age. With practice I think I’ll be able to compete in that too,” she said. Bjork was introduced to both games at a young age and loves them both. “I’ve been playing golf since I was eight years old and I’ve been playing tennis since I was six,” she said. Bjork said she is practicing during the week with tennis, and she practices with the golf team on Fridays and through the weekends. However, playing two sports aren’t the only interesting thing about Bjork. She comes to Lipscomb from Sweden. “I grew up with my family in southern Sweden with both my parents and my older brother. I’ve always been involved in a lot of sports, but growing up in southern Sweden was very different than what it’s like here,” she said. Bjork likes being in the states and while there are no huge differences, she did discuss some of the ones that caught her attention. “The food here is really...

After the sudden leave of Assistant Coach Jada Mincy, former Lady Bison Anna Bowers will step in as Assistant Coach for the 2013-2014 season. The 23-year-old Bowers had been given the title of Director of Basketball Operations for the staff at the beginning of this year, but she has now accepted the title of Coach Bowers. She graduated two years ago and was a standout athlete for the Lady Bisons from 2008 to 2012. “Right now, I don’t have the experience of being a college coach, but I was just in the girls’ shoes,” Bowers said. “I’m young and know what they are going through; I really think I can use my skills to help them through this journey. Not only as good people for this community, but great basketball players as well.” There is definitely a great respect between Bowers and Lady Bison Head Coach Greg Brown. “Anna is someone that people look for to hire. She has great work ethic, and she buys into the values we have for this team. It’s always important to have someone that understands the culture of our program,” Brown said. “I was shocked with the whole situation,” Bowers said. “ My first reaction was I was flattered that he asked me. The fact that I get to work and learn under a coach that I respect so much is an honor.” This year with the Lady Bisons will be Bowers’ first year coaching at the collegiate level. Along with playing for four years in college, she has also coached at Ensworth High School. “I’m really excited to learn from all the coaches....
