Friday night, roadside rivals Lipscomb University and Belmont University kicked off their seasons in a “Battle of the Boulevard” match-up. The 17th meeting between the teams ended with the Bisons hoisting the Red Bull Trophy yet again after posting a 3-1 victory over the Bruins. The Bisons, in their white and purple striped uniforms, took the field around 6 p.m. to warm up. Ten minutes later, the Bruins, dressed in red, took the opposite end of the field in an attempt to win back the coveted title of ‘Battle’ Champions. From the beginning of the match, Belmont started off aggressive and pushed deep into Lipscomb’s defense multiple times. For the rest of the game, the Bisons’ defense was not so generous. Lipscomb held their own against a good opponent, taking 11 shots on goal and making 3, while the Bison defense allowed 7 shots on goal. Only one found itself in the back of Lipscomb’s net. The first Bison goal arrived when Josue Chavez, the sophomore midfielder from Colorado, took an open shot from 25 yards away to get the ball rolling on Lipscomb’s eventual win. If there wasn’t any other indication that these two teams are rivals, the seven cards — six yellow and one red — certainly said enough. From the 38th minute on, Belmont played a man down after Cody Stratton was ejected for a slide from behind. Of the other cards, Belmont and Lipscomb each had three cautions. The visiting team did not not make it easy for Lipscomb to nab the win, however. Trailing 2-0 entering halftime, the Bruins worked hard to get back...

The Lady Bisons have spent the last 265 days thinking about how their season ended short of their fourth straight Atlantic Sun Championship. This Lady Bisons team can’t wait for redemption. They are living this season by the team’s new motto, “Can’t Wait.” “After winning three championships in a row, we are in new territory this year with this idea of coming up short. ‘Can’t Wait’ came to me just in the sense of ‘I can’t wait to be with my teammates, can’t wait to practice, can’t wait to do weights, can’t wait to travel,’” said Coach Brandon Rosenthal. Last year was a different year for the Lady Bisons, as the team has claimed a seat in the NCAA tournament for four of the past six years. According to Rosenthal, there is something the team has to regain this season to get back to that level. “We have to get back that swagger. We had a tremendous year last year going 15-3 in conference, and then losing in the semi final. Some of the aura to playing us has diminished,” Rosenthal said. “There was a time we were untouchable. By no means is this a lesser team. I believe they need to find that swagger and believe in themselves.” “As a team we are definitely looking at winning the A-Sun,” said junior Lauren Ford. “Our main goal as a team is to win the Atlantic Sun conference and go farther into the NCAA tournament than we have before, which is past the first round.” Ford was one of three Lady Bisons named to the pre-season All-American team. According to Ford, she...

“He wears so many hats,” Linda Price said in kind reference to Dr. Lynn Griffith. Price, in her 10th year as the Kinesiology Department’s Administrative Assistant, has the privilege of working with Dr. Griffith on a daily basis, and says he’s what some may call “a man of many talents.” Dr. Lynn Griffith has had success in his years at Lipscomb University as the previous chair, former head tennis coach, current director of the tennis center, and a full-time professor; however, Griffith would tell you his greatest success is his son, Samuel. “I think Samuel is an example of what can happen when you have an opportunity,” Griffith said. Samuel, 11 years of age and a rising 6th grader at Lipscomb Academy, was adopted from Haiti by Dr. Griffith and his wife in 2009. “I’ve been to Haiti 25 times now, and Samuel and I actually went back to Haiti together and you could really see the wheels turning for him,” Griffith said. Samuel seemed to understand where he came from and where he is now. As Samuel grew older, he developed a love for sports. Baseball, which Griffith says, “stops at the border,” is something Samuel picked up on in his time in America. He has played organized baseball since 4th grade and is one of the better pitchers on his team. “Being the parent of a pitcher makes me nervous,” Griffith said. “Everything that happens out there on the field starts with him.” Besides baseball, Samuel also enjoys bowling. Griffith’s wife is the bowling coach for Lipscomb Academy, so bowling seems to run in the family. “Samuel...
