The Lady Bisons softball team volunteered to work with the Boys and Girls Club at their annual fall picnic Saturday. This was the first year the softball team has worked with the Boys and Girls Club. The team assisted with a variety of activities including arts and crafts, face painting, hula hooping, kick ball and many other outdoor games. “We wanted to do something different this year,” said Head Coach Kristen Ryman. “We wanted to work with a different organization.” Ryman said the Boys and Girls Club is a great organization, especially since it gives older people the opportunity to mentor a younger generation. “It makes you realize there are people out there that are always looking up to people like us,” Ryman said. The girls on the team said they had a great time being around the kids and getting to play games with them. “It was good to just be a kid for a day ourselves and, at the same time, do something for them,” said junior Bridgette Begle. Begle and several other girls said they enjoyed face painting with the kids. Sophomore Gracey Aguirre was the celebrity of the day, doing the majority of the face painting. “My favorite painting was this little shark I did for this little kid,” Aguirre said. “He was having a blast with it, and I truly enjoyed it all.” Several team members said it was easy to connect with the kids by playing games with them. “I loved working with one little boy who loved to hula hoop,” said junior Kristen Sturdivant. “It was really fun getting to hang out with...

Lipscomb men’s golf hired a new coach, Will Brewer, a Lipscomb alum and NAIA Hall of Famer, to bring fresh leadership to the team this season. Coach Brewer is a Lipscomb graduate and was a golfer during college. Brewer was a three-time NAIA All American, the NAIA National Champion in 1976 and is a member of the NAIA Hall of Fame. The current golfers said they feel they’re benefitting from being coached by a Lipscomb legend. “It’s beneficial for us because he knows what it is like to be in our situation,” said junior golfer Dustin Wilder. “He knows what it takes to succeed at the college level.” Comparing last season to the current season, the golfers said they are excited and anxious for what a new coach with a new plan can bring to the table. “It’ll take a little bit of time for Coach Brewer to really get his system implemented,” said junior golfer Ryan Terry. “As far as the ways a coach can help a team, this year we’ll definitely improve a lot more than last year just because we’ll have someone who can solely devote his time to our team.” In past years, Buddy Harston was the head coach of both the women’s and men’s golf teams. For Kaycee Green, the Lady Bison’s volleyball game on Aug. 31 against Appalachian State was certainly one to remember. Entering that Friday’s game, Green was only two kills away from reaching the 1,000 mark. After finally reaching the milestone, Green recorded 12 more kills. Head Coach Brandon Rosenthal said he believes the achievement speaks volumes to Green’s talent. “There’s only a couple of girls at Lipscomb that have done that, and I’m happy Kaycee is a part of that,” Rosenthal said. “I love the fact that we’re able to add her to that group.” Green, a senior from Cookeville, Tenn., majoring in education, is number three in school history for the most kills in a career. “I didn’t think it’d take me this long; I was hoping I would do it earlier,” Green said light-heartedly. Green said she believes her commitment has led her to this point. “It took a lot of hard work, and I’m glad I finally got there,” she said. “I still want to get more. The work’s never done.” Statistics aren’t the only thing that has earned Kaycee Green recognition. The outside hitter is also the only senior on the Lady Bisons volleyball team. “It’s a little intimidating,” she said. “I have a lot more responsibility, and to take it on all by myself is kind of frustrating, hard at times. Some people are tired of the lack of spirit visible at Lipscomb athletic events, but this year a few students are stepping up with a new student-fan organization called Stampede. T. J. Ojehomon, a Lipscomb junior, proposed and received approval for a business plan to start a new student-fan organization that is entirely student-run. Older Lipscomb students might remember the short-lived success of the LUnatics, but this new organization has its sights for a long-lasting impression on Lipscomb’s campus. Stampede “seeks to be the student leaders of support for Lipscomb sports while continuously developing audience participation strategies for home and away sporting events.” Lipscomb’s culture has been shifting over the years including changes to academics and spiritual development. And some people think athletics needs a change as well. “The university is definitely heading into a new era with academic progress, spiritual development among the student body and overall campus growth,” Ojehomon said. “Athletics is making the same efforts to keep the pace, and Stampede will be a huge part of how far athletics can thrive.” Stampede is a members-only club with special benefits for joining. For $25 per semester, members receive exclusive T-shirts and hats, reserved seating at basketball games, travel costs covered, food and an experience they’ll never forget. Students are not required to attend every sporting event on campus, but this organization means business when it comes to raising team morale. Ojehomon said being a part of Stampede is one way that students can make their college experience more memorable. “You only get four years of a true undergraduate experience, and it shouldn’t be wasted,” he said....

Jake Locker was named the Tennessee Titans’ starting quarterback over veteran Matt Hasselbeck on Monday, Aug. 20. It was no surprise to many fans, as the Titans drafted Locker with the 8th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. Many thought that Locker might oust Hasselbeck for the starting job last season, but Hasselbeck kept the job. The veteran QB had a pretty good season in 2011, so Locker had to compete for this season’s head quarterback position – unlike most first round quarterbacks nowadays. The Titans have the 28th ranked schedule in the NFL, play four playoff teams from last season and face seven potential playoff teams. How Locker will play this year is a big topic of discussion leading up to the Titans’ opener against the New England Patriots on Sept. 9. As far as making progress is concerned, Jake Locker benefitted greatly from sitting behind Hasselbeck last season. In hindsight, sitting Locker during his rookie year was probably best for the future of the Titans organization because, thankfully for Locker, he wasn’t being thrown into a fire early on in his career. The skills Locker learned from Hasselbeck definitely showed in the quarterback’s second preseason start. During last Thursday night’s preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals, Locker completed 11 out of 20 passes for 134 yards and two touchdown passes – one to Kendall Wright and another to Nate Washington. Throughout the game, Locker showed great poise in the heat of pressure. ESPN NFL Analyst Trent Dilfer commented on Locker’s progress during the game.
