The Bisons and Lady Bisons track teams not only it the ground running – literally –to polish off their indoor season in February, they also set a new pace for smashing records. Since Feb. 2, the men’s and women’s teams have combined to break and re-break 13 school records. “This is not going to be a season of breaking someone else’s records,” freshman Tessa Hoefle said. “It’s going to be a season of making our own.” The teams’ first February meet, the ETSU Niswonger Invite, featured three of the 13 record-breaking races. Freshman Dani Walker stole two of Lipscomb’s records in Johnson City, taking down teammate Amanda Twigg’s records in the indoor 800 meter and mile races. The first day of the meet, Walker posted a time of 2:15.62 in the 800, beating out Twigg’s former record of 2:16.79. On day two, Walker claimed the mile record with a time of 5:08.97, nearly a second and a half quicker than Twigg’s previous record. Although she has made a name for herself in the Lipscomb record books in a short amount of time, Walker said her goal is not necessarily to break records. “My focus has not been on breaking the records of Lipscomb’s past,” Walker said. “Of course, I hope that records will be broken on the way, but it’s more important to me that I’m a part of the team of the present. The only person I focus on being faster than is the girl next to me and ultimately myself.” Freshman Tucker Peabody recorded the third school-best time of the meet for the Bisons. Peabody took down...

The much anticipated baseball season got underway on Friday at Ken Dugan field as the Dayton Flyers took on the Lipscomb Bisons. Vanderbilt transfer Richie Goodenow got the start for the Bisons but was overshadowed by Flyers pitcher Michael Hauschild. Hauschild pitched a complete game for the Flyers while giving up 8 hits, 3 runs and striking out 8 Bison batters. The Bisons struck first in the bottom of the first inning after Tennyson Dodd reached base off an errant throw. One batter later, Josh Chism singled to right field to bring Dodd home for the 1-0 Bison lead. The Flyers shook off the rust in the top of the second when Zach Stewart singled to right field followed by a Mike Coughlin single that defelcted off of Bison pitcher Goodenow’s foot. Robby Sunderman followed his teammates with a single to left field that loaded the bases. A base clearing double to straight-away center by Bobby Glover was just what the Flyers needed to get the ball rolling. Up 3-1, the Flyers never looked back. The Bisons struggled to get back on the board until the bottom of the sixth when Ricky Coleman hit a two run homer to tie the game 3-3. Senior Chad Fromm relieved Goodenow in the seventh inning. Fromm walked Sunderman to start the inning followed by an Ian Hundley double to right center. Bobby Glover sent Sunderman home off of a sacrifice ground out to put the Flyers back on top 4-3. With seven homeruns his junior year, Castine got off to a good start against the Bisons. In the top of the eighth...

A graduate student who played for Kansas State in her undergrad days is bringing her talents to Lipscomb’s volleyball team. Abby Fay, who was red-shirted her freshman year and sat out her last year, still has a year of eligibility to offer while pursuing her MBA at Lipscomb. “We’re really excited about her and the leadership style and ability she will bring to our team,” said coach Brandon Rosenthal. “We’re a completely new team, so we’re definitely looking for that leadership aspect.” A well-rounded player, able to contribute as a setter and libero, Fay brings leadership qualities gained from experience with a Big 12 program, the coach said. Fay says she “feels like a little kid again” by getting to come back and play one more year of volleyball. She played on the same club team as senior hitters Alex Kelly and Meghan Hinemeyer and senior setter Jake Pease. “Their club team was one of the most exciting club teams,” Rosenthal told Mark McGee, Lipscomb sports spokesman. “People gravitated towards them. They were the fiercest and the most competitive team around. They didn’t care who a team was, what the jersey said or how tall the players were they were. They were going to give everything they had.” Although Fay will not have the opportunity to play with her club teammates, the four still remain in contact as Alex Kelly inspired Fay to consider Lipscomb. “I was here visiting this past semester and really felt like this was a place where I could see myself,” said Fay. “It reminded me so much of club volleyball, and club volleyball for me...
