Lipscomb falls to No. 1 Vandy Boys in midweek matchup

Lipscomb falls to No. 1 Vandy Boys in midweek matchup

After winning their first conference series of the year, Lipscomb baseball returned to action Tuesday afternoon visiting crosstown rival Vanderbilt at Hawkins Field in an 11-3 loss.  Lipscomb got the action going early with an RBI-double from senior infielder Haddon Adams and a solo-HR from senior utility player Carter Smith. Meanwhile junior pitcher Dylan Bierman got the start for the Bisons and made quick work of Vanderbilt’s leadoff batters in two consecutive 1-2-3 innings. But Vanderbilt’s dominant batters got going in the third inning when two Commodores reached base and Bierman was pulled in favor of junior pitcher Noah Thompson. Thompson only lasted two batters before an injury forced him to retire for the night.  Both teams went through a rotation of pitchers, but it would not be enough for the Bisons, who allowed four runs in both the third and fourth innings, and offensively could not keep up with Vanderbilt’s stifling pitching. Adams led the Bisons in going 2-for-4 from the plate and scored one run. For the Commodores, freshman outfielder Enrique Bradfield Jr. went 3-for-4 on the evening and scored two runs. Thompson got the loss, his second of the season, and freshman pitcher Patrick Reilly got the win improving his record to 2-0. With the loss, Lipscomb moves to 7-8 and the top-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores move to 16-3. Photo courtesy of Lipscomb...
Lipscomb Softball takes series finale versus North Alabama

Lipscomb Softball takes series finale versus North Alabama

They say it’s not how you start but how you finish. This was the case for the Lady Bisons softball team after following up an 0-2 doubleheader day against North Alabama with a 5-2 victory on Sunday to close out the series.  The ASUN doubleheader day actually ended with Lipscomb out-hitting the Lions, but they just were not able to manufacture sustained rallies to win either game leaving more runners stranded than North Alabama. In the first game, the Lions bats were working early scoring two runs from freshman Sidney Bevis’s RBI single and senior Harley Stokes’s RBI single in the first inning. Lipscomb answered in the fourth by loading the bases and benefitting from freshman infielder Katelyn Belding’s sac fly to bring in junior outfielder Jessie Brown from third. In the fifth, it was more offense for the Lions with an RBI single from freshman Emma Broadfoot and a sac fly by junior Georgia Land. The Lady Bisons did rally in the seventh scoring two runs thanks to a sophomore Kamrie Rich RBI single, but the team couldn’t follow up with any more offense and lost the first matchup 4-3. Senior Megan Garst picked up the win and senior Breana Burke took the loss.  The second game seemed more promising in the early goings with pitching reigning supreme early on. Going into the top of the fifth the score was 1-0 Lady Bisons, with the only run being scored on a groundout RBI from sophomore outfielder Presley Leebrick that brought freshman infielder Makayla Alvey across home plate in the third. The complexion of the game changed in the...
Lipscomb wins rubber match against Kennesaw State Sunday afternoon

Lipscomb wins rubber match against Kennesaw State Sunday afternoon

After a tough Saturday outing for the Bisons, Sunday was a must-win as Lipscomb looked to grab the final game and win the first conference series. After a walk-off-winner on Friday night in extras from a sophomore catcher Chaz Bertaloni single along with 3.1 innings from sophomore pitcher Tyler Guilfoil, the Bisons won the first game. Saturday saw a crushing 15-2 win for the Kennesaw State Owls, but Sunday Logan Van Treek came out in dominating fashion with a seven-inning shutout performance.  The 6-4 left-handed freshman from Lincoln, Nebraska held #7 Georgia to only two runs in his last outing, and the one before that saw his offense pick him up in a win against Creighton. Van Treek brought the same energy he’s had all season to this point.  By the end of the game, Van Treek finished his second outing this season holding a team scoreless (the first against Murray State). Through 6.1 innings of work, the freshman was still dealing, even after seeing runners on first and second with nobody out in the very first inning. He was able to work himself out of trouble all game.  Lucky for Van Treek, the Bisons had all kinds of offense on the sunny Sunday afternoon, 14 to be exact. The Owls had no answer for the Bisons all game long as Lipscomb overpowered them in every way. One player who highlighted the weekend on the offensive side of the ball was Chaz Bertolani.  The sophomore catcher from Alpharetta, Georgia had a career day going 4-4 with 2 doubles, 2 singles, and a base on balls in his 5 at-bats...
Baseball drops game two against Kennesaw State

Baseball drops game two against Kennesaw State

Saturday afternoon, the Lipscomb Bisons fell to the Kennesaw State Owls 15-2 who bounced back after falling in extra innings Friday night.  Kennesaw State started quickly scoring two runs in the first inning, and the success continued for the Owls on the defensive side of the ball as starting pitcher junior Luke Torbert retired the first eight Bison batters for the second consecutive night. . Unlike game one, Kennesaw left very few runners stranded, scoring 15 runs off of 17 hits and 3 walks. Meanwhile, the Bisons had a quiet night totaling only five hits against the ace Torbert, who pitched seven innings before being relieved by senior pitcher Anthony Rodriguez, who pitched two scoreless innings.   Lipscomb’s only scoring came in the fourth inning off of singles by junior outfielder Maddux Houghton and sophomore catcher Chaz Bertolani bringing home freshman infielder Tiger Borom and junior designated hitter Chris Bashlor.  Kennesaw State, on the other hand, had five players with multiple hits, and nine Owls scored in the game. Junior pitcher Max Habbeger recorded the loss in his third start of the season bringing his record to 1-2 and Torbert got the win for his second of the season.  The rubber match will be played Sunday afternoon at 1 PM CT. Baseball wins extra innings classic against Kennesaw State in conference opener

After falling behind early, late-inning magic propelled the Bisons to a win in their first ASUN conference game in two years against the Kennesaw State Owls. Coming into the Friday afternoon matchup the Owls’ starting pitcher graduate transfer Jake Rice had worked 22 runless innings while holding his opponents to a 0.100 batting average.  Rice lived up to his reputation by retiring the first ten Bisons that came to the plate.  Meanwhile, Lipscomb’s starting pitcher freshman Ike Buxton held Kennesaw State to one run through as the first four innings, escaping a number of tight situations leaving eight Owls stranded. The fifth inning finally opened up the scoring for both teams, as the Bisons and the Owls both added three runs to their total.  For Lipscomb, their three returning second-year seniors, infielders Haddon Adams and Brian Moore and outfielder David Graves, all scored for the Bisons, breaking Rice’s scoreless streak. The Bisons kept the scoring going in the sixth inning with a two-run homer from junior Maddux Houghton that also brought home senior infielder Carter Smith and gave the Bisons their first lead of the afternoon. Lipscomb held this lead until the top of the eighth when sophomore infielder Jesse Sherrill singled to score senior infielder Jake Coro and tie the game. Sophomore closer Tyler Guilfoil came in to end the eighth inning and worked three and a third innings while not allowing any more runs for the Owls to get his second win of the season. But the Bisons themselves could not find an answer for Kennesaw’s ace closer, Jared Rine, until a walk in the eleventh put...
Lipscomb men’s soccer takes down soon to be conference opponents Central Arkansas 2-1

Lipscomb men’s soccer takes down soon to be conference opponents Central Arkansas 2-1

The Lipscomb men’s soccer team took down non-conference opponents Central Arkansas by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon. The midweek matchup pitted the Bisons against future Atlantic Sun rivals in the UCA Bears, who also played a fall season in the Sun Belt Conference this year. Despite the fact that this match didn’t count in conference play for either team, both sides wanted the win and fought hard to earn a positive result. It was the home side who would take the initial advantage, though, when Trinidad and Tobago native Tyrece Spicer tucked a shot into the near post, beating the keeper in the 7th minute. Spicer, a freshman left-winger, scored his third goal of the season to put Lipscomb ahead 1-0. In a statistically rare moment, goalkeeper Michael Sibley picked up the assist. It’s the sophomore keeper’s first–and likely only–assist this season. Lipscomb dominated possession of the ball and controlled the midfield from then on, but couldn’t find the net on their other six shot attempts of the half.  The Bears capitalized on the opportunities Lipscomb left behind when they scored an equalizer on the stroke of halftime. Substitute Masood Porsa scored against the run of play in a quick series of passes that left the Lipscomb backline undone, leveling the score at 1-1 after the first 45 minutes. The Bisons continued the narrative of controlling the game early on in the second half, but in the 59th minute, it looked as though Central Arkansas was going to nab another fortunate goal. Junior defender Louis Robinson bundled over his opponent inside the penalty box on a cross...
