Well, it’s that time of year again, folks.

2012 has been quite the memorable year. We’ve seen new changes around the student center, famous faces around campus, nail-biting Bisons match-ups and many more memorable events that have made for exciting and prosperous spring and fall semesters.

We here at Lumination have tallied up our top 10 stories of the year, varying from evacuated dorms to a free concert with a favorite of many.

Before we start our countdown, we want to remember Matt Deery and Kelcy Smart, two Lipscomb students who passed away over the fall semester. Both students will be deeply missed, and our thoughts and prayers continue to be with their family and friends.

A few stories that deserve some recognition that didn’t quite make the cut involve the Olympics, Batman, motorcycles and some bad weather.

In 2012, we saw swimmer Michael Phelps break the record for most metals earned by an Olympian. We also saw the final installment of the Dark Knight trilogy (a few of the caped crusader’s vehicles even made their way to Nashville). In February, we wrote about a group of Lipscomb’s psychology professors and their love of motorcycles. On top of that, we saw some nasty weather arrive in March that broke a window in the High Rise dormitory!

We’ll call these our ‘honorable mentions’.

10. SINGARAMA/ALL-AMERICAN DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT

Per tradition, Singarama, the variety show competition between social clubs, was held in March. Phi Sigma, Tau Phi and Gamma X were this year’s big sweepstakes competition winners for their act entitled ‘All Hands on Deck.’ The students in Delta Nu, Delta Omega, Delta Sigma and Delta Tau had their act, ‘The Land of Dreams,’ win in the theme category. In November, the annual All-American Dodgeball tournament took place in the Fanning courtyard, with ‘Team Belmont’ emerging victorious.

In May, the very first class from the College of Pharmacy received their diplomas. Also, Bethany Eldridge, a graduated senior, received a Fullbright U.S. Student grant that will help her continue her education in the Netherlands.

8. ON-CAMPUS ARRESTS

Two culprits were caught on campus over the fall semester, including one during the middle of the day while classes were in session. Lipscomb Security roped in these criminals, keeping our school safe.

7. MAT KEARNEY CONCERT

In March, local singer/songwriter Mat Kearney headlined SGA’s spring concert in Alumni Auditorium. He was a big hit with students, even offering a special shout-out to Lipscomb (over rival Belmont).

6. DON MEYER EVENING OF EXCELLENCE FEATURING BRAD STEVENS

In April, the annual Don Meyer Evening of Excellence was held, featuring Butler coach Brad Stevens as the keynote speaker. Stevens spoke about his ‘pyramid of character’ and his belief in the importance of commitment. Phil, Si and Miss Kay from the hit television show Duck Dynasty will host the next installment in the series in April 2013.

5. PRESIDENT OBAMA’S RE-ELECTION

In November, President Obama won his second term in office, besting former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney in a tight race. The Lipscomb community was quick to share their thoughts on the re-election.

4. ATHLETICS NEWS

This year in athletics, we saw a logo change, a new coach hired to lead the women’s basketball team and a potential change in the mascot’s name from Bisons to Bison (eventually, the Bisons name stayed).

3. NEW PLACES ON CAMPUS

The student center saw a massive overhaul during the summer, paving the way for new dining options. The bookstore also saw changes (moving to the bottom floor of the campus center, replacing the Sub Connection). The Nursing Building was also dedicated in October.

2. LIPSCOMB BASEBALL PLAYER MAKES SPORTSCENTER’S TOP 10

Chris Nunn, a former Lipscomb baseball player, made a big play during a Bisons game that landed on the number 3 spot on the top 10 list of ESPN’s SportsCenter program.

1. HIGH RISE EVACUATIONS

Lipscomb’s ‘story of the year’, so to speak, involved the three major evacuations of High Rise. Two different evacuations on two consecutive nights in March led to sleepless nights for HR residents. In October, damage to a sprinkler caused the third evacuation of the year. Needless to say, High Rise’s three evacuations were some of the most newsworthy moments on campus this year.

Well, that’ll do it for us. We hope everyone has a very happy new year, and we look forward to a great 2013!
