Lipscomb’s Student Government Association gathers every other week to hear proposals, vote on events, discuss student involvement on campus and partake in other matters. On the off-week, SGA members meet in their separate committees (academic, student life, spiritual) to plan and prepare for events.

Senate meetings are open to students who are interested in learning more about SGA. Meetings are bi-weekly on Mondays at 7:30 p.m.. The next SGA senate meeting will be Sept. 23.

It is Lumination’s intent to attend the SGA senate meetings this year to inform Lipscomb’s student body about the ongoing decisions that SGA makes.

Notes from the Sept. 9, 2013 meeting 

Lipscomb’s Student Government Association met on Monday, Sept. 9, at 7:30 p.m.. Roll was called and all members were present.

Four student groups submitted proposals for funding to SGA. The proposed funding will be voted on at the next senate meeting on Sept. 24. The following groups asked for SGA to sponsor their Lipscomb-based event:

Relay for Life – Cece Ramsey proposed that SGA partner with Relay for Life with a $8000 sponsorship. The funding will cover t-shirts, Relay materials, and ETS. Relay for Life has set a goal to raise $37,000 this year. The theme is Olympics, as the relay is set for one week before the winter Olympics in Russia. Relay for Life will be Friday, Jan.24 – Saturday, Jan. 25 in Allen Arena at Lipscomb University.

LU Department of Theatre – Will Miranne and Brooke Ferguson proposed that SGA fund up to $16,500 for student ticket sales for the department’s four upcoming shows. The shows include two fall events: Les Misérables and a choreographed dance show, and two spring events: Shrek the Musical and a film festival.

Delta Tau – John McAlister and Morgan Risley proposed that SGA fund $400 for Delta Tau’s alumni golf scramble and reunion. The event, which is for alumni and current members of Delta Tau, will be on Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. at the Highland Rim Golf Course in Nashville, Tenn.. All proceeds will be donated to the Neverthirst charity. SGA’s sponsorship will pay for sign advertisements and event snacks. Participant fees will pay for the reunion dinner.

Stampede – TJ Ojehomon, joined by Carter Hilliard, proposed that SGA sponsor Stampede with $2700 for the year. The funds will cover the costs of student road-trips, event supplies, food for monthly meetings, gas, printing fees and other miscellaneous items.

Melissa Parrish, Treasurer, gave the budget report. After factoring out costs for the proposals, along with the cost for the upcoming Paint the Herd event, SGA has $28,500 for the semester.

Vice President Drew Watson took the floor and opened discussion for voting on previous proposals, including the Cowboy Show and Open Table chili cook-off.

SGA voted unanimously to sponsor the Cowboy Show with $4500.

SGA voted to sponsor the Open Table chili cook-off with $3665. One vote abstained.

President Andrew Hunt reminded members of the impending HerdComing, which will be Oct. 1-7. SGA will be in charge of hosting the elections for class ambassador.

SGA has moved to their new office in Johnson, and they are currently in the process of cleaning it out.

Hunt asked committees to meet together to draw up specific proposals for the year.

Lauren King announced that the spiritual life committee gave $5000 to Campus Ministry to help with the cost of the spiritual retreat on Sept. 6-8.

Upcoming events include Paint the Herd on Friday, Oct. 25, Dodgeball on Friday, Nov. 11, and Running of the Bison on Thursday, Nov. 7.
