A new class of alumni took the first step into the next phase of their lives this Saturday in Allen Arena. Over 200 students graduated, including doctoral students, masters students and undergraduate students. Lipscomb president Randy Lowry spoke at the ceremony, sharing his hopes for each graduate’s future. “It’s your job to out into the world and take the sense of confidence and take the sense of character that has been developed here, and literally go change the world,” said Lowry. Lowry also spoke about the community Lipscomb alumni are a part of. Even now that they have graduated, Lowry hopes they will be a part of future projects. “We want you to realize that you will always be a part of the Bison herd,” said Lowry. Concluding the ceremony, Lipscomb’s alma mater was performed by Christon Carney, a member of the graduating class. A few Lumination staff members received their diplomas, including Kage Sanderson, Travis Byrd and former editors-in-cheif, Logan Butts and Cory Woodroof. It took a little time, but the Lipscomb Bisons now have a Division 1 win in the W column. The team (3-5) defeated the Tennessee State Tigers (2-7) 77-68 Saturday at Allen Arena in an afternoon tipoff. Senior forward Malcolm Smith (22 points) led the Bisons’ attack inside the paint, where the team amassed 44 of its 77 points. In the first half, the Bisons and Tigers looked evenly matched. Both teams struggled early to generate any sort of offensive pressure. But, Smith helped spark Lipscomb with five straight to give the home team a 9-4 lead with 12:20 to half. The Tigers began to spark their own game from the perimeter soon after to get back in the game. After a quick lead switch-off in the low 20s, the Bisons took back momentum and led at half, 36-31. To start the second, the Tigers came out hot on a 7-0 run to get the 37-36 lead at 18:01, but a 3 from freshman guard Aaron Korn settled the Bisons down. After TSU led by 8, the Bisons got back into the game and inched their way to a strong lead late in the game. Lipscomb never let TSU back in and picked up their third win of the season. Smith led all scorers with 22 and all rebounders with 8, while TSU’s junior guard Marcus Roper was not too far behind in points with 21. By Brianne Welch and Logan Butts Potential rain may have moved Lighting of the Green’s tenth anniversary into Allen Arena, but the night only brought a downpour of festive cheer and a surprise fit for the season. Grant returned to be the evening’s emcee. The lineup consisted of Danny Gokey, Jon Guerra, The Willis Clan, Brother Parker and surprise guest Vince Gill. Outside of the night’s entertainment, Lipscomb University shared that a new scholarship will be created in Grant’s honor. Lipscomb’s presidential spouse Rhonda Lowry was on hand to announce a gift of $50,000 to start the scholarship. During the show, a painting was created and will be auctioned off. The proceeds will go to the scholarship fund. During the show, the Lipscomb Academy and Lipscomb University choruses also performed Christmas songs. Grant performed a number of her Christmas-themed hits throughout the night, including “Emmanuel” and “Tennessee Christmas.” “I’ve always grown up listening to Amy Grant Christmas [music], so it’s kind of a nostalgic thing for me to come and listen to her sing,” attendee Mallory Grady said. Vendors run by local businesses were set up in the arena for anyone in attendance to visit before the show began. Santa and Mrs. Claus were made available for pictures inside of the Hall of Fame room and free hot chocolate and cookies were offered to guests as they arrived to the show. “I just like the whole setup of everything with the booths,” sophomore Kasey Gibson said. “It’s very Christmasy, so I like that.” The night of holiday festivities concluded with the tradition of lighting of Lipscomb’s Christmas tree in the Allen...

A few familiar faces will be joining show host Amy Grant at this year’s Lighting of the Green. The tenth annual show will feature American Idol finalist and Christian artist Danny Gokey, Dove-winning gospel singer and actress Tamela Mann, singer/songwriter Jon Guerra, multi-talented family The Willis Clan, Brother Parker, Lipscomb student choruses and others. Walt Leaver, vice president for university relations, spoke to the impact Grant has had on the show. “Lighting of the Green has become a beloved tradition in Nashville, and we couldn’t have made that happen without the support and generosity of Amy Grant, who gives of her time and talent to perform and to schedule an exciting slate of artists each year,” Leaver said. The free. rain-or-shine concert starts at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2, on the Allen Arena Mall. Festivities will begin at 4, including the Merry Marketplace at the arena. Free photos with Santa Claus are also available. Food or cash donations will be accepted for the Second Harvest Food Bank at the event. The Lady Bison basketball team opened up the 2014-2015 season with one win and one loss. Lipscomb earned their first win of the season in the season opener against Georgia Southern. The Lady Bisons won 80-74 Nov. 14 in Allen Arena. Senior guard Sara Bliss led the way for Lipscomb with 22 points. Redshirt junior guard Danay Fothergill added 17 points, and redshirt junior forward Ashley Southern scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Lipscomb shot 46 percent from the field and 47 percent behind the three-point line. Freshmen guards Kennedy Potts and Emily Eubank made their first collegiate starts for Lipscomb. Back in action in Allen Arena on Nov. 16, Lipscomb fell 79-66 to Wright State. Fothergill led all Lipscomb scorers with 19. Bliss scored 13. Turnovers were costly for the Lady Bisons.
