A battle took place tonight in Allen Arena as the Lady Bisons returned home to take on Kennesaw State University after being away during the Christmas break. The Lipscomb Women’s Basketball team is 0-3 in conference after tonight’s 82-78 loss to KSU. Kennesaw scored the first points of the game, but did not regain the lead until the 11 minute mark in the first half. After that point in the game, the Lady Bisons struggled both offensively and defensively. At the half, the Owls led 45-36. Lady Bison Assistant Coach John Wild said the team needed to change some aspects of the game to be successful in the second half. “We’re doing a bad job defensively just being active,” Wild said. “I think if we can get some touches and deflections and that sort of thing, it may take them out of rhythm.” The Lady Bisons had a shooting percentage in the high 60’s during the first half, but went downhill during the second half. As the first half wore on, Lipscomb struggled with rebounds and down low in the paint. One of the Lady Bison’s strongest players, forward Ashley Southern, had a hard time in the second half getting beat down low. The Lady Bisons did not give up and fought back for a lead. Redshirt Sophomore Danay Fothergill played in her first home game tonight and made herself known. Fothergill fouled out of the game at the end of the second half after scoring 18 points and winning seven rebounds. While most of Lipscomb’s campus had their scarves bundled around their necks to stay warm in Monday’s frigid weather, the men’s basketball team was neck-and-neck with the Jacksonville University Dolphins on Monday night in Allen Arena. The Bisons fell to the Dolphins in the closing seconds to lose 88-85. Redshirt freshman point guard J.C. Hampton’s three point attempt was tipped and misdirected, and time ran out as the teams chased the rebound. Although Lipscomb came up short, three players for the Bisons scored in the double digits. Freshman Josh Williams had his first career start on Monday. The guard from Jackson, Miss., scored 28 points to lead the team and collected nine rebounds. “It was a great honor to start. I just took the opportunity to step up and do what the team needed,” said Williams, who went 50-percent from the arc and made all of his free throws. Hampton put up 19 points, and sophomore guard J.J. Butler rounded out the double-digit scoring with 13 points. Jacksonville’s field shooting led them to victory, knocking down 15-for-25 in the second half while the Bisons shot 15-for-32. The Bisons and Dolphins also combined for 27 total turnovers for the game. Jacksonville took advantage of the Bisons’ turnovers, scoring 16 points from the changes in possession. Four Lipscomb Bisons scored in double digits in a 87-79 victory against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles at Allen Arena on Thursday night. Martin Smith, J.C. Hampton, Josh Williams and Malcolm Smith all broke the double-digit barrier. Junior forward Martin Smith led all scorers, putting up 24 points and going 12 for 14 from the free throw line. “I got to the free throw line, got my rhythm going and kept it going from there,” Martin Smith said. He credited his teammates on the evening’s accomplishments. J.C. Hampton had 19 points and was four for five from behind the arc. The redshirt freshman point guard said that that team wants to keep an up-tempo pace. “We want to play fast the whole game,” Hampton said. “We want to get out as quick as possible and get quick baskets. We practice hard to play fast.” Freshman guard Josh Williams had 20 points, a career-high for the new Bison. Malcolm Smith knocked down 11 points against the Golden Eagles and went four for five from the field. The win moved the Bisons to 4-4, while Tennessee Tech fell to 5-5. The game started out with a couple of fouls on each team, but the pace quickened, and with the fast pace, Lipscomb turned the ball over seven times in the first half, while Tennessee Tech had 11 turnovers. By Bridgette Begle and Brianne Welch The ninth annual Lighting of the Green brought rich tradition and holiday spirit to the Nashville community Tuesday night. Show regular Amy Grant was joined tonight by Ben Rector, David Phelps, Brenda Lee, Nicole C. Mullen, Hymns for Hunger & Friends (feat. Cindy Morgan and Andrew Greer) and the Stella family, including Nashville‘s Lennon & Maisy, for a night of music, merriment and plenty of bright Christmas lights. Fourth and fifth grade students from Lipscomb Academy, as well as the high school chorus, joined the University chorus on stage throughout the performance. The younger chorus tipped off the night with a medley of holiday classics, and the University chorus sang “Deck the Halls.” “We came here to hear one of our children sing in the chorus,” parent Heather Duncan said.” Our daughter is in the fifth grade at the campus school, so we’re looking forward to hearing everyone sing tonight.” About halfway through the show, Brenda Lee, singer of holiday classic “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” came onto the stage and ignited enthusiasm throughout the crowd. She asked for “eight really good singers,” and ended up with about 15 children, ranging from ages five to 20, to join her in the Christmas classic “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” Lee shared her delight in being a part of the night’s fun. “You know, when miss Amy Grant asks you to do something, it’s just awful hard to say no,” Lee said. “So I’m awfully proud to do this for Lipscomb. For this year’s Lighting of the Green concert, Amy Grant will be bringing along plenty of friends for a night of Christmas joy. On Tuesday, Dec. 3, Grant will be joined by Nicole C. Mullen, Brenda Lee, Ben Rector, Nashville‘s Lennon & Maisy, David Phelps and Hymns for Hunger & Friends (feat. Cindy Morgan and Andrew Greer), as well as a few of campus’ student choruses. The free concert begins on the Allen Arena Mall at 5:30 p.m., while other festivities will begin at 4 p.m. If there is rain, the event will be moved into Allen Arena.
