In the eighth week of the 2013-2014 school year, Joe Sanderson and Madeline Smith are behind the news desk to update you about what is happening on campus and around the Nashville community. Savanna Schubert fills you in on the week’s top world news headlines, Ariel Jones give the scoop on all things with Nashville entertainment, including an extended look at winners of the 2013 Dove Awards. Aaron Schmelzer gives you the weather forecast and Carter Sanderson brings you up to speed with sports. This week, we’ll bring you all the details on the 44th annual Dove awards including words from some of the night’s top winners, a look at the red carpet and what Lipscomb students thought of the event being held on campus. Most people keep original pictures for nostalgic reasons, but Joshua Dildine works with photographs and paints over them on a large scale. At Lipscomb’s John C. Hutcheson Gallery in the James D. Hughes Center, eight pieces of Dildine’s work are part of the visiting artists program. Dildine is an artist based out of Los Angeles. Dildine grew up in the California area, and the original influence of art in his life was his grandmother, a water color painter. “She would babysit me, and she would point into the sky and say ‘what colors do you see in the sky?’, and I would say ‘blue’, and she would say, ‘wrong’ and I would think she’s crazy,” Dildine said. The art background his grandmother inspired propelled Dildine to pursue his passion in art. “Having that constant influence throughout my whole life has been amazing, but now that I’m much older and in the contemporary art realms my influence has changed. I look at art and I’m inspired by everything,” Dildine said. The core of his artwork looks into how society views images. “I wanted to make it more personal, but also in some ways I wanted to investigate the power of image and photographs,” Dildine said. Dildine has three base steps to his work: construction, deconstruction and re-construction. “The construction part is the context that we give images. The meaning behind them. Deconstructive aspect is the act of painting over it and removing that context,” Dildine said. Dildine believes that removing the face of mother on a photograph, the power of it is lost. Before the semester becomes too overloaded with events and calendars gets completely booked, Lumination would like to offer a handy guide to all of the events coming up during the fall semester. September looks to bring a full slate of men’s and women’s soccer games. Pledge week also kicks off in September as Bid Night took place Sept. 12. Some of Lipscomb’s most anticipated events begin in October starting with the Tau Phi Cowboy show on Oct. 5, Paint the Herd on Oct. 30 and Haunted High Rise scaring students on Oct. 30. The women’s volleyball schedule kicks into high gear during October as well. Lipscomb’s annual Dodgeball tournament will start November off with a bang. The men’s basketball team will open up their season against Belmont with the Battle of the Boulevard against rival Belmont on Nov. 8, followed by the women’s Battle less than a week later on Nov. 14. Everything from sporting events across all sports to special Student Activities Board sponsored events, to usual favorites like Wednesday Night We Eat are taking place throughout the next few months, making Lipscomb’s campus a busy place. All sporting events take place at Lipscomb University unless otherwise noted.
