For someone who eventually wants to get into historical restoration, Andrew Norman seems to be a part of history himself, after serving two tours in Iraq as a corporal in the Marines. Norman, a member of Lipscomb’s Yellow Ribbon program, began his service in October 2005. He said he has always known that he was drawn to the military but did not specifically know the Marines was his future destination. At 25, Norman is one of the younger members of Yellow Ribbon, which enables veterans who served on active duty after Sept. 11, 2001, to obtain an undergraduate degree with discounted or free tuition. “I love the Yellow Ribbon program,” he said. “Without it, I would not be going to an institution as prestigious as this.” The small community at Lipscomb is something Norman said he really appreciates. “The friendly atmosphere cannot be found in most other schools.” A Nashville-area native, Norman said his family is an important support system for him. “My parents are big supporters in everything,” he said. Norman said his younger sister Nicole, an Austin Peay graduate, plays a big role in helping him through his schooling. He said she is always there for him in his “why am I doing this?” moments. His whole life, Norman said he has had a passion for history. After graduating, Norman intends to go to graduate school and pursue a career in historical restoration. “I’m not gonna get rich in that field, so it shows you my like for it,” he said. NASHVILLE (Feb. 11, 2012) – The Bison bench may have been one man short on Saturday, but that did not stop the team from scoring 99 points in their overtime victory over Stetson. Lipscomb outscored the Hatters 25-17 in overtime to improve their conference record to 7-6. The Bison’s overall record is now 12-13. This was the first game since senior guard Jordan Burgason was suspended after he violated team rules. The team shot 3-of-15 from the 3-point line on Saturday. The 20 percent shooting performance is far worse than the Bison’s season-long percentage of 38.4 percent. Deonte Alexander, the team’s leading scorer versus Stetson (27), made two of the 3-pointers. The nine points that were accounted for from three is a season-low for the team. The second lowest total is 15 when the Bisons shot 5-24 from three against Austin Peay State and 5-13 versus North Florida. However, the team’s 99 points scored against Stetson is the second highest total recorded all season. The first was also against Stetson, a game the Bisons won 104-103. The Lipscomb Bisons (3-3) open a four-game home stand Monday at 6:30 p.m. against Austin Peay (0-7) of the Ohio Valley Conference. The Bisons completed a four-game road trip with a 79-77 victory Wednesday against Sacred Heart to win the Mayan Division championship of the Cancun Challenge. Jordan Burgason hit six 3-pointers in his season debut finishing with a team-high 20 points. Lipscomb and Austin Peay didn’t meet from 1962 until last year’s two meeting. The Bisons and Govs have met 68 times with Austin Peay leading the series 40-28. Last year the Bisons won 104-101 in overtime in Allen Arena on Nov. 18 and 73-70 in Clarksville on Dec. 7. Four Bison freshmen are from Clarksville – starting point guard Zavion Williams, forward Damarius Smith, and twins Malcolm and Martin Smith. Damarius’ brother, Amius, plays football for Austin Peay. The four combined to average 35.7 points per game. Last month it was announced that Belmont would be the leaving the A-Sun and becoming 12th member of the Ohio Valley Conference. While it was announced on the 13th of May, Belmont will not officially join the OVC until July 1, 2012. Belmont president Robert Fisher was intentional in explaining that the move was a strategic one that was made for the student-athletes and the budget of the university. Belmont will have to pay $200,000 to leave the Atlantic Sun Conference, however, the school’s travel costs will drop immensely. “You don’t have to get on a plane to go anywhere,” Dr. Fisher said. “And the students won’t have to miss as many classes.” Missing classes is something that Belmont and Lipscomb have dealt with in the past because of the long travels the two schools make to Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. This bodes even worse for Lipscomb now, since their travel partner will no longer be making the trips. Usually, Lipscomb and Belmont would share a plane when traveling to Florida to play teams like North Florida and Jacksonville. Now, Belmont’s longest road trip will be a six hour bus ride to Edwardsville, Ill. to play Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. All of Belmont’s current teams – other than men’s soccer – will be recognized by the OVC in 2012. And despite reports, Belmont does not plan to add football anytime soon. While many students took a break during the week, the athletic teams were very busy. During spring break week, the nationally ranked Lady Bison softball team traveled to Hawaii for the Spring Fling in Honolulu. The Lady Bisons opened up tournament play with a bang, defeating California by a score of 1-0. In that game, sophomore pitcher Whitney Kiihnl pitched seven scoreless innings for the win. Mollie Mitchell drove in Kellie Sirus to give the Lady Bison’s their lone run for the game. California was ranked twelfth in the nation. After defeating California, the Lady Bisons lost four straight, losing two apiece to California and Hawaii. The Lady Bisons record as of now stands at 20-7. The team returns to play on Friday, March 26, at Draper Diamond for a double header against ETSU. Game times are 4 and 6 p.m. The tennis teams were also in action over the break. The men’s team went 1-2 over the break defeating Florida Gulf Coast 4-3 and losing to Stetson and Georgia State. Winners for Lipscomb against FGCU were Daniel Hangstefer, Colby Shaw, and Tanner Brown in singles. In doubles, Chad Perron and Tanner Brown along with Colby Shaw and Mario Hernandez brought home two wins for the Bisons. Their record is now 4-7 on the year. The Bisons return home on Tuesday to face Austin Peay University. Matches begin at 2:30 p.m. On the women’s side, the ladies struggled going 0-4 against North Florida, Jacksonville, Florida A&M and FGCU. The Lady Bisons’ record now stands at 4-12.
