The Lipscomb Bisons (14-12, 3-3 ASUN) swept Kennesaw State with a 13-2 victory at Ken Dugan Field Sunday. The game got off to a hot start for Lipscomb, as the Bisons hit four RBIs to take a quick 4-0 lead in the second inning. First baseman Cade Sorrells started the scoring spree by hitting a single that allowed a runner to advance to third base and then score on the next at-bat. But the scoring did not stop there. Third baseman Zeke Dodson launched a home run over the left field wall to start off the bottom of the third inning, and the Bisons added four more runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the eighth. Senior pitcher Joshua Colon earned his first win of the season, throwing four of Lipscomb’s seven scoreless innings. Kennesaw State rotated through pitchers Jake McLinskey, Monty Horn and Devenir McCray by the end the fifth. Sorrells (3-for-5), Haddon Adams (3-for-4), Brian Moore (2-for-3) and Chris Bashlor (2-for-3) all had multiple hits for the Bisons. Terrence Norman (2-for-5) and Alex Carballo (2-for-5) had multiple hits for the Owls. Lipscomb’s defense played well, employing a bend-but-don’t-break strategy. The Owls had the bases loaded, but the Bisons were able to get the outs they needed to escape the inning without much damage. By the middle of end of the fifth inning, the Owls had stranded more than 10 runners on base and Lipscomb led 5-1. On Friday, the Bisons beat the Owls 6-3 for their first ASUN win of the year. Scoring came in the form of a series of RBI in...

Lipscomb men’s tennis suffered a 5-2 loss in their second conference match at the Huston-Marsh-Griffith tennis center against Kennesaw State on Thursday. Due to one of their players’ being ill, the Bisons’ lineup had to be changed, which caused them to make a rough adjustment. “We had a sickness with Jorge Ortegon (player No. 3), so we had to take him out of the lineup, which obviously doesn’t help,” Lipscomb coach Geoff Hernandez said. “But you want your team to be ready to take the chances when they have them.” The Bisons (1-1 ASUN) started the afternoon losing the doubles point against the Owls. In line one for Lipscomb, Victor Chaw and Pablo Caffarena got the job done and defeated Kennesaw’s Drew Lahey and Bryan Triana 6-3. However, the Bisons were unable to win the doubles point in lines two and three, which allowed the Owls to begin the match with a 1-0 lead. “Our one and two, Victor and Pablo, played great in doubles and in singles,” Hernandez said. “The rest of the team did not step up.” In line two, Lipscomb’s Jake Penny and Francesco Tacconi lost 6-3 to Lucas de Torres Curth and Kevin Patel while Pedro Uribe and David Skrabut lost 6-0 to Jack Sorel and Fermin Calvo Barcelo in line three. “Today’s match was not our best performance,” Hernandez said. “It was one of those where our team was divided.” The Bisons were unable to take away the Owls’ lead. Penny, playing in line four, lost 6-1 in both sets to Kennesaw’s Sebastian Osorio, which put the Bisons down 2-0. Chaw gave hope when...

Michael Buckland will play the fourth postseason game of his Lipscomb career Wednesday night when the Bisons take on North Carolina State in the NIT quarterfinals. And, conveniently, that will allow the North Carolina native to play in front of his family and friends yet again. Buckland, who hails from High Point, has family scattered across the state, so each postseason game has offered a slightly different group of people a chance to see him in action. “Every time that we’ve had these games, it’s been in a different place in North Carolina,” he said. “I’ve had friends and family at all of them, but I’ve had different people at every game.” Lipscomb played North Carolina in Charlotte in the 2018 NCAA tournament, and the Bisons played two more postseason games in the Tar Heel State last week when they beat Davidson and UNCG in the first two rounds of the NIT. UNCG is less than 20 miles from High Point, so the Buckland family opened their home to the Bisons last Friday for a night of food, ping-pong, pool and March Madness. The arrangements were made on short notice because Lipscomb did not find out the date and time for the UNCG game until Wednesday afternoon. When Lipscomb Director of Basketball Operations Adam Notteboom asked Buckland for restaurant recommendations, the Lipscomb junior offered his house as an option. Big THANK YOU to the @MBuckland23 family for hosting us tonight. #OurTeam #HornsUp pic.twitter.com/SRdXb9giaB — LipscombMBB (@LipscombMBB) March 23, 2019 “I was like, ‘I’m not sure how my family feels about this, but they’d probably be [happy] to have us...

The Lipscomb baseball team fell to No. 6 Vanderbilt 15-1 on Tuesday night in the annual neutral-site meeting between the two teams. The game was held at First Tennessee Park in Nashville, which is currently home to local professional sports teams (the Nashville Sounds and Nashville SC). The first two innings of the game stayed quiet, while both starting pitchers got off to stellar starts. Lipscomb freshman pitcher Scott Elgin started off by getting out seven of the first eight batters he faced. However, in the bottom of the third inning Elgin seemed to lose control of his pitches; he walked the first two batters he faced in the inning before getting the next two batters out. Elgin was then one out away from getting out of the third inning, but a 2-2 pitch to Vanderbilt right fielder JJ Bleday was rocketed over the seats in right center field to put the Commodores on the board first 3-0. Elgin then gave up a walk after the home run, which prompted the Bisons to make their first pitching change of the game. The Commodores’ starting pitcher Mason Hickman was also able to get off to an amazing start as well; however, his hot start continued for his entire day unlike Elgin’s. Hickman only allowed one baserunner through his first five innings. Going into the sixth inning Hickman had a no-hitter on the line, but a hard hit two-out ground ball by Lipscomb catcher Chaz Bertolani forced Vanderbilt’s shortstop and third baseman to run into each other, giving the Bisons their first hit of the day. Hickman was able to get...

It didn’t take long for the Lipscomb men’s basketball team to get over the disappointment of being snubbed from the NCAA tournament. Following the NCAA and NIT selection shows, the Bisons held practice late Sunday night to prepare for their Tuesday-evening battle at Davidson. The first round NIT game is set for 6 p.m. CT and will be carried on ESPN3. “We knew no matter where we were playing that there was a 50 percent chance that we’d have a Tuesday game,” Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander said. “There’s enough software out there now that you can get yourself ready [quickly].” The Bisons (25-7) were in consideration for an at-large bid to the Big Dance, but multiple losses to Belmont and Liberty and an upset defeat at Florida Gulf Coast were too much to overcome. Liberty took the ASUN’s automatic bid after topping the Bisons by a score of 74-68 in the conference championship game on March 10. “We were disappointed after the Liberty loss,” senior forward Rob Marberry said. “We kind of kicked ourselves for maybe a day or two, and then afterward we had to get back to work because we still have games to play.” Lipscomb is doing its best to take the NCAA snub in stride and focus on the NIT, which ends with the Final Four on April 2 and 4 in New York City’s Madison Square Garden. “We’re obviously disappointed we’re not in March Madness, but it’s still great for the program to be playing [in the NIT],” Marberry said. “We’re trying to increase the size of the [Lipscomb] name. Any time a team is...
