Lipscomb’s Department of Business presented its Entrepreneurial Pitch contest this week for students to present their business ideas to local entrepreneurs. Dr. Joe Ivey reported a great turnout at the preliminary Monday night competition, as well as a good showing at the Wednesday night finals. “The students have some extremely good ideas this year,” said Ivey. “We’re going to give these students some opportunities to win prizes, and we hope they’ll use these prizes to fund their ideas.” Students presented ideas ranging from a housing development powered by alternative energy to a website called dormads.com, which functions like an on-campus Craigslist. Bethany Hertrick won the non-profit category with her “international doll” idea, and Nate Underwood won the for-profit category with his food truck park. Each finalist received a cash prize, with both of the first place winners receiving $1,000 to put toward their business endeavors. “Basically, a food truck park will help solve the problem of connecting the customer to the truck,” Underwood said. “I want to do that through an actual location that food trucks can buy into with a membership fee.” Underwood said he also wants to have a web service that will allow the customer to preorder food and walk past the line to the front of the truck to pick up their order. Eight different entrepreneurs and businessmen from around Nashville judged the contests. Jerry Cover, a Lipscomb alumnus and dot com entrepreneur, spoke highly of the participants. “I was really impressed with not only the quality of the products that were presented, but also the quality of the presentations,” Cover said. “I think there’s a...

With the season wrapped up and the the school year coming to a close, the Bisons say goodbye as they send off three graduating seniors: Mario Hernandez, Joe McArdle, and James Murrell Hernandez has spent 3½ years at Lipscomb and on the Bisons tennis team. A senior political science major from Vancouver, Canada, and captain for this season’s team, Hernandez made a name for himself in the Lipscomb tennis program. “Mario was nominated the team’s captain at the end of the fall because of his strong leadership on and off the court,” men’s assistant coach Mike Sherman said. “He was the perfect example of being a great ambassador for the Bisons, carrying himself with class and honor at all times. Because the guys respected him, he was able to effectively lead the team to the conference tournament. “On top of this, his drive to succeed motivated other team members to push themselves beyond their expectations. Mario will be able to use his attitude of leadership and humility to affect every one he meets in the future. I expect he will be a great leader in whatever industry he pursues.” Hernandez will graduate in December after completing his final semester at Lipscomb. Following his graduation, he plans to tend the States’ Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. When reflecting on his career as a Bison, Hernandez said he is proud to have helped the program improve. “I just loved being a part of the movement to improve the Lipscomb tennis program in all areas,” Hernandez said. “When I came in as a freshman, we didn’t really get any...

“I look forward to a time that I won’t get to experience, and you won’t either. But decades down the road where other people will look back and see that in this moment, this community did what it was called to do.” Those were Dr. Randy Lowry’s concluding words as he introduced the layout of Lipscomb 2016, his vision of what Lipscomb University will look like in five years, to the student body at The Gathering on Tuesday, March 29. “We’re going to call it Lipscomb Next: Vision for 2016,” Lowry said. “The essence of this entire plan is to invest $125 million into this institution by the time we get to our 125th anniversary, which is 2016.” Lipscomb invested about $54 million into their last plan, making the proposed $125 million dollar investment into their next plan “extraordinarily ambitious.” Notable additions to expect Lipscomb to make in their next plan include: three new colleges, fifty new full time faculty members and thirty new academic programs. Some of the changes that Lipscomb will be undergoing will take years to develop. However, Lowry stated a couple of significant changes are set to take place in the very near future. One change being the renovation of Fanning Hall. “As we think about residence halls, we realize that they are not at the standard that we would like,” Lowry said. “The city’s approval pending, Lipscomb is set to gut out and renovate Fanning Hall this summer. Thanks to a construction crew committing to working on the project 24 hours a day that summer, a renovation that would normally take nine months...
