Softball intramural sign-ups end Wednesday, season begins Sept. 3

Briefly: As a reminder for all those looking to get involved with intramural softball this season, the deadline to sign up for a team is Wednesday, Aug. 28. The mandatory captains’ meeting is the day after, Aug. 29, and all teams must pay a $20, refundable fee.   The actual season begins on Sept. 3, and if you wish to register, visit  imleagues.com or speak to Matthew Abplanalp or Evan McGee of campus recreation for further information. Kickball tournament brings competition and fun

Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013 marked Lipscomb University’s 4th annual kickball tournament that puts the residents of each dorm in friendly competition. The tournament created a fun and engaging way for freshman to get to know each other as well as the upperclassmen. Several students and families made it out to the intramural field for the majority of the day, despite the sweltering heat and stifling humidity. Many of the freshmen expressed their anticipation to be able to enjoy a day of hamburgers, fellowship, and friendly competition “I’m excited just to be playing with my friends,” freshman Christina Calandro said enthusiastically, “And I’ve already met a new friend, so I’m very excited.” A few changes were introduced to this year’s kickball tournament that made the whole experience slightly different from tournaments in years past. “Last year we had a group stage and then we had a playoff, but this year, rather than having the group stages, we just did one big single-elimination tournament so that everybody would come out and play their one game, and if they won, they would advance to the next game and whatnot,” Evan McGee tournament coordinator says, “And then we had a huge slip-n-slide at 2:00 this year, which was fantastic.” McGee went on to emphasize how smoothly this year’s tournament was run and how well it was organized. At the end of the day, spectators and players were able to sit back and enjoy free burgers and brats as they watched the championship game take place between the Sidewalk Sprinklers from Sewell Hall and the Mama’s Boys from High Rise. “It went really smooth this...

The first list of off-campus dining locations was revealed Friday afternoon by Lipscomb Dining via their Twitter account (@LipscombUDining). The list included the Subway on Granny White Pike, the Sweet Cece’s on Hillsboro Pike, the Copper Kettle on Granny White Pike, The Well Coffeehouse on Richard Jones Rd., the Pizza Perfect on Granny White Pike, the Which Wich on Richard Jones Rd., the Kalamata’s on Portland Ave., the Sunset Grill on Belcourt Ave., the Nomzilla Sushi on Villa Pl. and the Jam Coffeehouse on Wedgewood Ave. It was indicated that more restaurants and locations will be added soon . Campus Notes – June 20

Here are some newsworthy links making their way around campus this week. ACADEMICS The Andrews Institute’s Leadership Tennesee program has announced its first students. A variety of camps are being hosted over the summer at Lipscomb. ATHLETICS Baseball player Hunter Brothers was recently drafted in the MLB  Draft’s 24th round by the Colorado Rockies. Madi Talbert was recently named honorable mention All-America for her accomplishments. The women’s basketball team has added a new transfer student from the University of Florida to the program. Cheerleading tryouts will be held on August 20. Construction has begun for a new golf short-game facility in Brentwood for the men’s and women’s golf teams. Five have joined the men’s soccer team. The men’s and women’s track and field teams have announced their team awards for the season. Five members of the track and field team will be competing in the U.S.A.
