I like to catch up with friends at the end of the Christmas holidays. I often ask them, “What did you do over the holidays? ” With that question, my friends most often respond with the same answer. “Nothing much. Just spent time with family, you know.” They then follow up with the same question I asked them. I respond by telling them: “You know, I did the same thing. Oh, but I did do something a little different this year. I went to Peru on a mission trip.” I had been to Peru before– last June on vacation with a fellow Lipscomb student and great friend Joel Collao, who is also from Peru. I was privileged to be able to return on January 2nd with a group from Lipscomb on a mission trip to Lima, the capital of Peru that I had visited before. While the heart of Lima, the Plaza de Armas, retains its colonial architecture and is quite beautiful, outside of the colonial center is also outside “tourist country.” However, outside is where the real heart and culture of Lima lie. That is from where the real Peruvians come, but the real Peruvians are also often the people that need the most help both spiritually and physically. We went to Lima to create a VBS for the children and families that attend or live near the Iglesia de Cristo de Lucyana (Lucyana Church of Christ). Several members of the church welcomed our arrival with a large homemade sign and songs. The same members helped us throughout the week in breaking through the language and culture barriers....

Remember that talented duo that performed in Shamblin a couple months back, sponsored by our SGA? Well, that same duo will be on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno this Thursday night along with Cameron Diaz and Eric Stonestreet. The Civil Wars, featuring Joy Williams and John Paul White, will be playing the title track from their forthcoming album “Barton Hollow.” Their album is set to drop on the first of next month. For years now, AT&T has been the sole service provider for Apple’s coveted PDA, the iPhone. As of 11:06 a.m. EST today, that is no longer the case. In a press conference this morning, Lowell McAdam, Verizon’s President and COO, made an announcement that in February 2011, the iPhone 4 will be available for Verizon customers. “Today we’re partnering with a giant of the industry, and that’s Apple,” McAdam said. “Late in 2010 we started offering the iPad… today we are extremely grateful to announce that the iPhone 4 will be available early next month.” Tim Cook, Apple’s COO, also commented on the new partnership at the press conference. “I am incredibly happy, and I can tell you all [that] Apple is very very excited to bring the iPhone to Verizon’s customers,” Cook said. Apple representative Dan Dee explained how ready Verizon is to launch the iPhone on their network. “We’ve built our business on building the very best network, and now our customers have a choice for the iPhone 4 on the nation’s most reliable network,” Dee said. “We have advanced the capacity [of our network] and built margin into it. We’re ready for this launch.” Dee also announced exactly when customers will be able to order their iPhones. “On Feb. 3 our existing customers will have an opportunity to pre-order, and on Feb. 10, everyone will be able to order online, in stores or in Apple stores,” Dee said. With the recent release of the new and improved iPhone 4, which includes features like FaceTime, HD video and a five-megapixel camera (on the front and back of the...

While every elementary, middle and high school in the Nashville area has closed for today (and probably will tomorrow as well), Lipscomb University does not surrender to the white blanket covering the entire southeaster United States. Classes are still scheduled for the entire university, but keep an eye on your email for professors who might cancel individual classes. Because of this wintry weather we’re getting, the basketball game between the Bisons and the Ospreys of the University of North Florida have been moved up to noon today for the men’s game and 2:15 pm for the women’s game. There will be a free BBQ lunch for students and admission to the game is free to everyone. So, whether your classes are cancelled or you’re trekking through the snow to reach that academic building, stop by Allen Arena this afternoon for some Bison basketball, free food and a promised good time. Send us your photos of our campus covered in powdery snow and we’ll post them on Lumination with a credit to you, the photographer! Please upgrade your...

Voices mixed with French horns, trumpets, symbols and other instruments resounded in Collins Alumni Auditorium on Monday night. Lipscomb’s A Cappella Singers, University Singers and University Wind Ensemble collaborated to kick off the Christmas season. Everything from traditional holiday carols to Russian Christmas songs were performed. “The student’s didn’t miss a beat, they played like professionals and they looked and sounded like they had been practicing this for years,” said sophomore Taylor Geen, an English major in attendance. “I don’t know how they do what they do, but it was an amazing show and I’m so glad I got the opportunity to go.” Dr. Steve Rhodes and Dr. Gary Wilson, directors, wanted to present a program of holiday favorites and music for the season. The concert was free, though most would agree it would have been worth it to pay for the performance. “My favorite part of the night was when we performed the song ‘This Little Babe,'” said Lindsay Latimer, a sophomore voice performance major. “The song is sung in rounds, so there are a lot of different parts going on at once. It also just featured the women, which was really great and different. “The Russian piece was the most difficult piece we preformed because I’ve never sung in, or spoke for that matter, in Russian. Having one of our student conductors conducting it made it that much more fun and entertaining.” If you didn’t get a chance to attend this outstanding show, check out a recap of the performance here. A Celebration Of Christmas “My favorite piece was ‘Ñe imamï inïya pómoschi’ by Pavel Chesnokov,” said...
