Storied softball season ends in Tuscaloosa

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — There were tears. Lots of tears. Hugs abounded. There was a prayer circle and one last speech from Lipscomb Lady Bisons’ coach Kristin Ryman. And before they left the field Sunday at the Alabama Softball Complex there also were some smiles. The Lady Bisons didn’t win the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional, but they advanced to the finals, losing to Alabama’s Crimson Tide 6-0 in front of more than 2,100 fans. It was the first trip to an NCAA Regional for the Lipscomb softball team, which won both the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season and tournament titles. “Overall, I am extremely proud of our team with the fight and the resiliency they have shown all weekend,” Ryman said. “This is the closest any Lipscomb softball team has ever been, and I think that is in large part due to our seniors and what they have done in leading this team. “I don’t think we ever came into this postseason wanting to just be happy to be here. I think we came in wanting to win it. We knew that was going to be an extremely tough task, but that’s what we were here for. These girls never stopped from an effort standpoint and I couldn’t be more proud of them.” In the Saturday, May 22, 5-2 win over the Lady Bisons, Alabama relied on bunts and infield hits to produce runs.  The next day home runs made the difference with four of the six runs coming off of three home runs. “They beat us with their short game Saturday and today they came out and relied on the long ball,”...
Study Abroad: EU and You, London

Study Abroad: EU and You, London

Last Friday, students boarded United flight 9012 for London-Heathrow airport. What was originally scheduled to be a nine hour flight became nearly a twelve hours as a result of the volcanic ash lingering in the Icelandic sky. However, the 18 students on the trip used this extra time to sleep on the airplane and to aid in adjusting to the timezone differences. Upon arrival in London, students took a quick bus tour of London before checking in at the hotel, including a tour of the inside of Westminster Abbey. Friday proved to be a day of sight-seeing, souvenir shopping and the enjoyment of an authentic fish and chip dinner at a local restaurant. Sunday morning began with a worship experience at Westminster Abbey. The Anglican service was one most students had never experienced but were appreciative of partaking in. “The tradition was quite beautiful,” said one student about the worship. Later that afternoon, students traveled to Kensington Palace. Cheese plates, various teas, sandwiches, finger foods, and desserts filled the tables as students enjoyed the cultural experience of high tea at the palace. After tea, Dr. Charla Long recognized the three seniors who graduated this semester but were unable to walk as a result of going on the trip to the EU. Grace Biggs, Hayden Pendergrass Justin Harris, Anela Odzakovic and Bojana Zivak were all recognized. Biggs also received her SALT scholar medallion. Monday morning began with a lecture from Chris Bullivant, the Projects Director of The Centre for Social Justice. This lecture served to highlight the similarities in British and American approaches to poverty, education, and homelessness. The Centre for...
We Are Nashville

We Are Nashville

While the flood waters are receding downtown and across middle Tennessee, families and businesses alike are in the cleanup process. This story has come at a time when the national media are concentrated elsewhere, given the attempted terrorist attack in New York and an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that is now reaching the shores of Louisiana. This has not stopped some members of the national media, though.  Keith Olbermann had this to say about the flooding of Nashville in a recent segment of his show, “Countdown.” Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy Nashville has also been featured on the front page of  USA Today with an incredible story about how not only citizens got involved in the relief effort, but also inmates. Homemade videos were posted on YouTube within hours of the flooding.  This video in particular has received the most attention, and for good reason. One of the most inspiring posts came from an unlikely source, though. The following story came from a Nashville Predators hockey team blogging site.  Patton Fuqua is one of writers for Section303.com, one of the main news outlets for Predators fans.  During hockey season fans visit the site to read game recaps, signing news, rumors and anything else Nashville Predators.  However, on Wednesday morning, hockey took a back seat. Allow me a moment to step away from the usual voice of this website. What I am about to write has absolutely nothing to do with hockey. If you live outside of Nashville, you may not be aware, but our city was hit by a...
