University wind ensemble fires up crowd for spring concert

The University Wind Ensemble played with fire in Collins Alumni Auditorium on April 21 with a professional Dixieland Jazz Combo for the ensemble’s spring concert.  The seven-piece jazz combo, along with the University Wind Ensemble, performed a set of pieces called “Playing with Fire.” The pieces were “A la Bauduc,” “Shades of Blue” and “Polyphonies and Riffs.” The Dixieland Jazz Combo was made up of Sam Levine on the clarinet, Alan Suska on the cornet, Creighton Miller on the trombone, G.R. Davis on the double bass, Chris Nelson on the drums, Mark Godwin on the banjo and Kevin Madill on the piano. The wind ensemble prepared all semester for the show; however, the students were only able to rehearse with the jazz combo the night before. Despite the adversity freshman trombone player Robert Glenn said the experience was a good one. “Playing with a Dixieland Jazz Combo is fantastic. They’re just great musicians, and I’m very glad I got the opportunity to play with them,” Glenn said. The wind ensemble opened the night by preforming “Lassus Trombone” by Henry Fillmore, then followed that with “Watchman, Tell Us of the Night” by Mark Camphouse. The first two songs were conducted by Dr. Stephen L. Rhodes. The final piece before the jazz combo played was the “English Folk Song Suite.” The first piece, “Seventeen Come Sunday,” was conducted by J. Elliot Bowman. The second piece, “My Bonny Boy,” was conducted by Bailey Werner. The third and final piece, “Folk Songs from Somerset,” was conducted by Grace...

Caleb Pickering receives Mary Morris award for service

Caleb Pickering received the Mary Morris Award of Exemplary Service to Society in a ceremony at Thursday morning breakout chapel in Collins Alumni Auditorium. Pickering thanked his family, his church and his mentor, Richard Goode who won the award last year, and he urged students to use their time at school wisely. “At the simplest level, service to God and to man is the sacrifice of your time so that you can give that time to others,” Pickering said. This award is given every year to a member of the “Lipscomb family” who demonstrates a high level of service to the community and to the church. “The criteria for the award is they exhibit a spirit of volunteerism, they engage in meaningful activities in the community to help spread God’s light. They demonstrate a commitment to Christian missions wherever they may be and that they are an advocate for Lipscomb University,” Phillip Camp said before he handed the award to Pickering. Pickering helps Green Street Church of Christ’s ministry to the homeless. The Nashville church’s congregation recently decided to allow homeless people to sleep on its property and sometimes even let them into the sanctuary to sleep. “Even at times when the local government and others are opposing them, they have decided to stand and fight for this,” Camp said. “They try to meet the needs of their homeless guests while also maintaining their dignity and offering them real friendship and real relationships.” Beginning in 2000, the church started partnering with a group of Lipscomb students called “Fools for Christ.” According to the Green Street website, “Every Wednesday hundreds of college students and...

Singarama’s On Fire hands two wins to ‘Just Drop It’; other acts net one apiece

Entering the last show of the three-day production of Singarama’s On Fire, the “Stop,” ‘Drop” and “Roll”  groups were all tied up with one win a piece. That changed when university president Randy Lowry announced the show “Just Drop It” as the Sweepstakes Award winner at Collins Alumni Auditorium Saturday night. The show, consisting of members from Sigma Iota Delta, Delta Sigma, Pi Delta, Kappa Chi and friends, made its way to the top, something that director and senior Aaron Joseph said was unforgettable. “It was a fantastic feeling,” Joseph said. “I’ll never be able to forget the feeling [of winning].” Joseph also spoke on one of the key elements of the production. “Scott Bledsoe and Rainey Lankford wrote the script for me, and they did a fantastic job,” Joseph said. “I think that’s what pulled the whole show together.” The story of “Just Drop It” is about a man named Dan, who is constantly assailed by his fear in life. Eventually, he drops his fear and becomes a happier person. The act won its first honor, the Theme Category Award, on Thursday. The “Drop” group sang and danced to “I’m So Excited,” “Bad,” “More,” “Love on Top,” “Higher and Higher,” “Any Way You Want It,” “I Know Where I’ve Been” and “Goodbye.” Joseph admits that he did not walk the path to success alone. “I got so much help from so many different people,” Joseph said. “I couldn’t have done it without those people.” “Don’t Stop Me Now,” directed by junior Makenzie Kanyuh, won the Music Category Award on Friday night. The show consisted of students from Delta...

‘Just Drop It’ takes Sweepstakes Award at final Singarama show

In the last night of Singarama’s On Fire, “Just Drop It” picked up the Sweepstakes Award to give the show two total awards for the 51st annual Singrama. Participants from Delta Sigma, Kappa Chi, Pi Delta, Sigma Iota Delta and friends sang and danced their way to victory at Collins Alumni Auditorium Saturday night. “Drop” group director Aaron Joseph said that, once the sweepstakes was awarded to “Just Drop It,” he didn’t believe it at first. He said that his feelings of winning are beyond words. “It’s an indescribable feeling,” Joseph said. Joseph said that having a front-seat view to watch the show grow from an idea to a sweepstakes winner has been a fulfilling reward. “As a director, that’s all I needed,” Joseph said. The Sweepstakes Award, an honor given to the best overall show, came two days after the “Drop” group won the award for the Theme Category Award. The other shows, “Don’t Stop Me Now” and “Roll With Me,” also won awards. “Don’t Stop Me Now” won the Music Category Award on Friday, while “Roll With Me” won the Staging Category Award at Saturday’s matinee showing.
