“Drop,” the second show in this year’s Singarama’s On Fire performance, looks to provide a different take on the usual Singarama act. The show’s plot revolves around main character Dan, played by senior Sigma Iota Delta member Drew Watson. Dan has been struggling with fear his whole life, and when he gets an invitation to a college reunion, he must drop his fears. In the show, Fear is portrayed as an actual character, only perceptible to Dan. Senior Sigma Iota Delta member Rainey Lankford plays the role of Fear. Lankford also co-wrote the script with senior and fellow SID member Scott Bledsoe. Lankford has been involved with Singarama for the past three years, hosting the show for two years in a row. “This show is something different from the way things usually go,” Lankford said. “We tried to step away from the typical love story. There’s love in the story, but it’s more about something that goes deeper, which is the way that our fears control us.” Director Aaron Joseph, a senior and SID member, has been involved with Singarama for the past three years as music director and a lead. “Directing’s been a whole different ballgame,” Joseph said. “It has been nice to form my show the way I’ve envisioned it and to see my vision come to life. “I’ve been trying to kind of teach a lesson to people that sometimes, you have this fear and sometimes, it can hold you back, but you find a lot of freedom when you face your fears,” Joseph said. The cast and crew of “Stop”, one of the three segments in the 51st installment of Singarama, have been working together almost every day and night for over a month. With only a few days remaining until one of the biggest events on Lipscomb’s campus, the members of “Stop” are anxiously awaiting opening night. The overall theme of Singarama this year is “Singarama’s On Fire” and the individual segments of the show are titled “Stop,” “Drop” and “Roll.” The first of the three shows, “Stop,” will be put on by Delta Omega, Delta Xi, Phi Nu, Sigma Omega Sigma, Theta Psi and friends. “Stop” revolves around Rick and Louis, two crossing guards, who encounter an unexpected theft while on their morning shift. The theft causes the two guards to embark on a twist-filled mission for justice and love. “Throughout the story, they are going from place to place and finding different clues, trying to figure out who stole from the jewelry store,” show director Makenzie Kanyuh said. Kanyuh has participated in Singarama all three years that she has been at Lipscomb, but this is the first time she has held the position of director, a position that she says has both its perks and problems. “I’m just really excited to see it all come together,” Kanyuh said. “As director, it’s so much fun, but it’s really stressful to see it all piece-by-piece and have some holes still in it as you’re a week away. Circle Players, partnered with Lipscomb’s Department of Theatre, will open Shrek the Musical this Thursday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Collins Alumni Auditorium. Show participants has been rehearsing music and preparing for the production since January. “It’s a blast,” said sophomore theatre major Jonah Jackson, who plays the main antagonist in the musical, Lord Farquaad. “I’ve had more fun with this character than any other character I’ve done.” Shrek the Musical runs March 6-8, 13-15 at 7:30 p.m., and March 9 at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for Lipscomb faculty, $5 for students with ID or free, with SGA providing the free tickers. Although the weather kept some students from class, it did not keep them from attending Monday’s SGA Spring Concert featuring Judah & the Lion in Shamblin Theater. To get the evening started, Footlight Parade, Lipscomb’s own indie-folk trio, opened the show with a few cover songs and a few songs of their own. After the opening band performed, students waited in anticipation for Judah & the Lion to come on stage. Judah & the Lion, an Americana-folk band based out of Nashville, got started in December of 2011. Because the band’s lead guitarist and vocalist, Judah Akers, was a Belmont student, some students had previously heard of the band. “My sister goes to Belmont, so she’s friends with them,” said freshman Mandy Durose. Judah and the Lion performed a few crowd favorites such as “After All” and “Sweet Tennessee” while incorporating a few new songs. The open space in Shamblin encouraged students to clap along, stomp their feet and even dance. “In Alumni, everyone is sitting down, but in Shamblin everyone is up – up on the floor, dancing,” said senior Kelli Blackshear, SGA’s social committee chair. SGA had high hopes of bringing in not only more Lipscomb students to the spring concert this year but also non-Lipscomb students. SGA also concluded that having the spring concert in Shamblin, instead of Collins Alumni Auditorium, changed the outcome of the concert. “It’s a more intimate environment in Shamblin,” said Brandon Carver, senior SGA member. Social Clubs held their 2014 Bid Night in Collins Alumni Auditorium to kickstart pledge week. “Big night is the most exciting night,” said Pi Delta member Sarah McFarlin. Sigma Iota Delta member Cade Morgan calls bid night, “everything.” “It’s where we introduce who we are taking into our club and who’s going to be the future of it,” Morgan said. Each group did a roll-call activity and each pledge introduced his or her self on stage. The most memorable act of the night was by the pledges of Theta Psi, who inhaled helium before introducing themselves.
