The Postgame: October brings success for Bisons

The Postgame brings you up-to-date on all of Lipscomb’s sporting events. Fall sports are in full swing, and the Bisons are finding success in October. WOMEN’S SOCCER The Lady Bisons soccer team is 3-1-1 in the month of October. Lipscomb tied with North Florida 0-0 after two overtimes. On Oct. 5, the Lady Bisons defeated Jacksonville 1-0, then traveled to Stetson to pick up a 4-2 victory on Oct. 10. Two days later, Florida Gulf Coast got the best of Lipscomb 2-1. However, the Lady Bisons bounced back getting a 4-0 shutout against USC Upstate. Junior Anna Lail has scored five goals in October, which has earned her two Atlantic Sun Player of the Week honors. Freshman Elizabeth Ashwood recorded her first goal as a Lady Bison against USC Upstate. Lipscomb has clinched a spot in the A-Sun Championship tournament for only the second time in program history. The Lady Bisons will play their final regular season game Oct. 24 against Northern Kentucky at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. The seniors will be honored as part of Senior Day. MEN’S SOCCER The men’s soccer team sits in third in the A-Sun with seven points. The Bisons posted a 1-0 win over North Florida on Oct. 18. Junior Reece Holcombe scored a goal in the 56th minute off a pass from redshirt junior Matt Kerridge. On Oct. 11, Lipscomb fell 3-1 to Stetson. Senior Luke Gearin scored the Bisons lone goal. The goal moved Gearin into a tie for third place on Lipscomb’s career goal rankings. Freshman goalie Nate Davis earned A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week honor for the week...

Lady Bisons 2014-15 schedule includes matchup with Lady Vols

Lady Bison basketball released the competitive 2014-2015 schedule on Aug. 20. The highlight of the schedule for fans will be the game on Dec. 7 against the Tennessee Lady Vols at Allen Arena. “Hosting Tennessee at home is exciting,” red-shirt junior Danay Fothergill said. “We want to look at it as just another game. We want to use our advantages to be competitive and just have fun.” The regular season tips off Nov. 14 with Georgia Southern and Nov. 16 against Wright State. Both non-conference games will be played in Allen Arena. The highly anticipated Battle of the Boulevard matchup will be played Dec. 2 at Belmont. Before ending the non-conference schedule, the Lady Bisons will travel to Ohio to face Xavier on Dec. 20. After the Christmas holidays, Lipscomb takes on Georgia Tech in Atlanta Dec. 29. On Jan. 5 in Allen Arena, Trevecca will be the last team the Lady Bisons play before Atlantic Sun Conference play begins. The last 14 games on the regular season are A-Sun matchups. “We just want to make sure we end non-conference play after Christmas with energy going into conference,” Fothergill said. Jan. 10 starts conference play against Northern Kentucky in Allen Arena. The Lady Bisons are ready to show they belong in the stacked A-Sun conference. The first real A-Sun test may come on Jan. 29 against Florida Gulf Coast in Allen Arena. “Florida Gulf Coast brings a lot to the conference and are always a tough matchup,” Fothergill said. “We have something to prove and are ready to show what we have been working on.” The last three out...

Games against Texas, Colorado highlight 2014-15 men’s basketball schedule

The 2014-15 men’s basketball schedule has been released, and several high profile matchups dot the early portion of the season. The Bisons kick off the season at home on November 14 with a game against Berry College, followed by the home slate of Battle of the Boulevard on November 17. The team will travel down the road to Vanberbilt on November 20 and finish up the Battle of the Boulevard 2014 series at Belmont on November 24. Lipscomb’s first game outside of Nashville will be on November 30 against Colorado of the newly-minted Pac-12. After three straight games in Tennessee at Tennessee Tech, at home against Tennessee State University and on the road with Austin Peay on Decemeber 3, 6, and 13 respectively, the Bisons will travel to Austin for a matchup with Big-12 powerhouse Texas on December 16. SEC newcomer Missouri will receive a taste of the Lipscomb game on January 3 in Columbia in the last road game before A-Sun Conference play kicks off on January 10 at home against Northern Kentucky. Key conference tilts include two games against recent March Madness darlings Florida Gulf Coast, one on the road (January 31) and one at home (February 14), as well as a home (January 13) and away (February 25) slate with USC Upstate. Bisons defeat Jacksonville on extra inning walk-off in A-Sun tourney

Freshman infielder Hunter Hanks hit a walk-off single to give Lipscomb a 2-1 win over Jacksonville in the Atlantic Sun tournament in Fort Myers, Fla. The Bisons won in the 10th inning. Junior infielder Grant Massey led off the 10th with a single to left field. Junior outfielder Jonathon Allison bunted Massey over to second, followed by a Hanks single through the left side to score Massey. Lipscomb scored one run in the third. Allison tripled to right field. Senior outfielder Drew Adams singled to score Allison to give the Bisons the 1-0 lead. Jacksonville scored their solo run in the ninth. Lipscomb baseball heads to A-Sun Tournament with series win over Florida Gulf Coast

The Lipscomb baseball team ended their season with a three-game home stand against the first place team in the Atlantic Sun, Florida Gulf Coast. With the number one seed in the Atlantic Sun Tournament in sight, the Bisons won their first game against Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday 11-6, keeping their hopes alive for one more day. Junior center fielder Jonathan Allison led Lipscomb with three hits in the game. Junior left fielder Josh Lee was one of many Bisons with two hits during the explosive offensive outing. Due to expected inclement weather on Saturday, the Bisons and Eagles played a doubleheader on Friday. Needing to win twice to have a shot at first place in the conference, Lipscomb split the games, dropping the first game 3-2 and winning the second match-up 7-1 to take the series. Junior shortstop Grant Massey led the Bisons in the first outing by batting 2 for 4, while junior designated hitter Griffin Moore paced Lipscomb by going 3 for 4 and belting a home run in the second game. The two victories helped to solidify the Bisons’ fourth place finish for the season in the Atlantic Sun, a position which matches them up against fifth place Jacksonville (13-13 conference record, 20-31 overall record) in the opening game of the A-Sun Tournament. Lipscomb defeated Jacksonville at Dugan Field in two out of the three games that they played in March.
