By Brianne Welch and Jesica Parsley Four transfers and five freshman bring a new dynamic to the Lady Bison Basketball team’s 2013-2014 season. Beginning his second year as head coach, Greg Brown has seen great development in the young team during the pre-season while teaching the four transfers and five freshmen the Lady Bison dynamics. “We are teaching the basic dynamics and breaking habits of the new girls,” Brown said. “But we have seen all the players develop to what we are trying to do across the board.” With so many new faces on the court, the team dynamic is different, but the players are embracing the new team. “I think we’re definitely clicking,” redshirt sophomore Danay Fothergill said. “Coming from the summer to now we know each other’s tendencies and strong points. We are getting to know each other on the floor better.” The flow between the girls as well as the team connection will drive them through a season that has already deemed the Lady Bisons the “underdog”. “I think it’s cool to be the underdog,” Fothergill said. “Our mindset is, you all have no idea what we’re about to do.” Coach Brown says he is pushing the team to be a little better every day in order to be in the best position to perform well and come out on the winning side. “We always tell them we can prepare you but then competing is what you do in the game,” Brown said. “We have to get better every day, play hard and play smart. Before the semester becomes too overloaded with events and calendars gets completely booked, Lumination would like to offer a handy guide to all of the events coming up during the fall semester. September looks to bring a full slate of men’s and women’s soccer games. Pledge week also kicks off in September as Bid Night took place Sept. 12. Some of Lipscomb’s most anticipated events begin in October starting with the Tau Phi Cowboy show on Oct. 5, Paint the Herd on Oct. 30 and Haunted High Rise scaring students on Oct. 30. The women’s volleyball schedule kicks into high gear during October as well. Lipscomb’s annual Dodgeball tournament will start November off with a bang. The men’s basketball team will open up their season against Belmont with the Battle of the Boulevard against rival Belmont on Nov. 8, followed by the women’s Battle less than a week later on Nov. 14. Everything from sporting events across all sports to special Student Activities Board sponsored events, to usual favorites like Wednesday Night We Eat are taking place throughout the next few months, making Lipscomb’s campus a busy place. The Lipscomb women’s basketball team has officially released their 2013-2014 schedule, which includes a December trip up to Knoxville to take on the Lady Volunteers. Nine of the teams in Lipscomb’s schedule are post season teams from last year. “We have set up a challenging schedule for our team,” Brown told Lipscomb Athletics. “It will give us some experiences in great environments while preparing us for the Atlantic Sun season.” To start the year, Lipscomb’s Women’s basketball team is scheduled to play in two exhibition games against Freed-Hardeman (Oct. 28) and Fisk (Nov. 6). The Lady Bisons jump into the regular season against Morehead State on Nov. 10. This year’s installment of the Battle of the Boulevard is set for Nov. 14 at Allen Arena. The Lady Bisons will look to avenge their 70-54 home loss to Belmont from last year. The Lady Bisons are also set to play three SEC powerhouses this seasons. They play Kentucky in Lexington on Nov. 21. Less than a month later, the team returns to Athens, Ga., to take on the Lady Bulldogs again this year on Dec. 17. Lipscomb then travels to Rocky Top to face Tennessee, a team that the Lady Bisons have never played, on Dec. 29. “It is always great to play the Kentucky’s and the Tennessee’s. They are great models of excellence and where we are working to get to,” Brown said. The team start their conference play in Johnson City, Tenn., against ETSU on Jan. 2. After an off-season full of change, including the hiring of Casey Alexander as the new head coach, the upcoming 2013-14 Lipscomb men’s basketball team officially has its first schedule of the Alexander era, with tilts against conference foes and local competition filling out the slate. Following an exhibition match against Freed-Hardeman on Halloween night, Lipscomb opens the season against arch-rival Belmont in the first Battle of the Boulevard at Allen Arena on Nov. 8. The second round will take place down the street on Nov. 20 at Belmont’s Curb Event Center. The Bisons will take the court against two other Nashville squads in November as well. The Nov. 15 game against Vanderbilt will be the first between the opponents since 2009, and the Nov. 18 matchup with Tennessee State will be the first meeting of the Bisons and Tigers in over a decade. Lipscomb’s first out-of state trip will lead to the program’s first game against perennial heavyweight Georgetown in Washington, D.C. over the Thanksgiving weekend. “That will be an exciting time for our guys to go to the nation’s capital and play a premier program,” Alexander told Lipscomb Athletics. “It will be a dream come true for J.J. Butler to go back home and play in front of his family. There are a lot of really exciting parts to that game to look forward to. The Lipscomb Bisons men’s basketball team played their only exhibition game of the season on Thursday against Freed Hardeman, defeating the Lions 99-84 in a match-up that served as a preview for the upcoming season. This was the 99th meeting between the Lipscomb and Freed Hardeman men’s basketball teams. Former NAIA rivals, the Bisons now lead the Lions 76-23 in the series. The Bisons have played the Lions in an exhibition game every year since entering the NCAA (excluding the 2010-2011 season). Redshirt freshmen center Stephen Hurt led the Bisons in scoring and rebounds with 21 points and 12 rebounds. He also had two assists and was six for seven on free-throws. Hurt believes that the Bisons were dominant on the offensive side of the ball. “I thought we played a really good game offensively. We’ve been working on our offense since we started practice. I think it’s working really good.” Hurt said. Hurt also believes that the team still has plenty of room to grow as the season progresses. “Defensively, we’ve got a lot to fix, but I think, you know, it’s the first game of the season and we can’t expect too much,” Hurt said. “It will come together as the season goes along.” Junior center Oscar Garcia scored the first two points of the game and led the team in assists with 4. Senior Deonte Alexander followed Hunt in scoring with 17 points. Sophomore forwards Malcom and Martin Smith both had 11 points, as did freshmen guard J.C.
