Lipscomb Volleyball is set to begin a highly anticipated season, and the Lady Bisons, despite a high preseason ranking, are looking beyond the honor to focus on the bigger task at hand, as coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “For us, the end goal is a championship,” said Rosenthal, who is entering his twelfth season as head coach of the Lady Bisons. He mentioned that while being voted as the top team in the Atlantic Sun conference is quite the honor, it is simply an honor. Lipscomb is returning six of seven starters from last year, and of those players, Bri McCombs, Jewell Dobson and Lauren Ford all won preseason awards. McCombs earned preseason Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Year, Dobson was voted Atlantic Sun preseason Player of the Year and Ford received a place on the All-Conference team. The Lady Bisons will get an opportunity to cash in on the predictions, as they face four top 25 ranked teams during the season. Their schedule kicks off with back-to-back ranked opponents, Creighton and Kansas ranked 23 and 22 respectively, on the first day of the season. Matchups with no. 15 ranked Missouri and no. 19 ranked Kentucky will be happening on Sept. 5 and 19. When scheduling these matchups, Rosenthal is only thinking about one thing: winning. He has great confidence in the team and thinks highly of its capability. “We’re [playing top schools] because I feel like that’s the group that we’re in,” said Rosenthal. After months of anticipation for prospects both highly regarded and barely known, as well as NFL die-hard fans, the 2014 NFL Draft has finally come to a close. Thanks to a 2013 campaign that saw a fifth consecutive playoff miss, the Tennessee Titans roster went through an overhaul in the offseason, leaving plenty of holes to be filled by the draft. Having been a Titans fan for the franchise’s entire existence, I can say that this draft, like many before it, had both highs and lows. Here are my thoughts on the Titans’ 2014 Draft selections. First Round, 11th pick: Taylor Lewan, Offensive Tackle, Michigan: Easily the most baffling selection in an otherwise solid draft haul for the Titans. With the team’s two most glaring needs being a quarterback and a defensive back, the Titans chose an offensive tackle despite having two starters entrenched in that position already. I, personally, was hoping for Texas A&M star quarterback Johnny “Football” Manziel. Even if he does not live up to his ultra-high expectations, he will be an entertaining player who draws crowds to the stadium. The Cleveland Browns sold 2,000 season tickets in the first 24 hours after selecting Manziel in the draft. Second Round, 54th pick: Bishop Sankey, Running Back, Washington: After a historic drought for running back selections, the Titans made Sankey the first back chosen in the 2014 draft. Sankey was an extremely productive player in college and will be a solid replacement after losing Chris Johnson in the offseason. Before the semester becomes too overloaded with events and calendars gets completely booked, Lumination would like to offer a handy guide to all of the events coming up during the fall semester. September looks to bring a full slate of men’s and women’s soccer games. Pledge week also kicks off in September as Bid Night took place Sept. 12. Some of Lipscomb’s most anticipated events begin in October starting with the Tau Phi Cowboy show on Oct. 5, Paint the Herd on Oct. 30 and Haunted High Rise scaring students on Oct. 30. The women’s volleyball schedule kicks into high gear during October as well. Lipscomb’s annual Dodgeball tournament will start November off with a bang. The men’s basketball team will open up their season against Belmont with the Battle of the Boulevard against rival Belmont on Nov. 8, followed by the women’s Battle less than a week later on Nov. 14. Everything from sporting events across all sports to special Student Activities Board sponsored events, to usual favorites like Wednesday Night We Eat are taking place throughout the next few months, making Lipscomb’s campus a busy place. The Lipscomb women’s basketball team has officially released their 2013-2014 schedule, which includes a December trip up to Knoxville to take on the Lady Volunteers. Nine of the teams in Lipscomb’s schedule are post season teams from last year. “We have set up a challenging schedule for our team,” Brown told Lipscomb Athletics. “It will give us some experiences in great environments while preparing us for the Atlantic Sun season.” To start the year, Lipscomb’s Women’s basketball team is scheduled to play in two exhibition games against Freed-Hardeman (Oct. 28) and Fisk (Nov. 6). The Lady Bisons jump into the regular season against Morehead State on Nov. 10. This year’s installment of the Battle of the Boulevard is set for Nov. 14 at Allen Arena. The Lady Bisons will look to avenge their 70-54 home loss to Belmont from last year. The Lady Bisons are also set to play three SEC powerhouses this seasons. They play Kentucky in Lexington on Nov. 21. Less than a month later, the team returns to Athens, Ga., to take on the Lady Bulldogs again this year on Dec. 17. Lipscomb then travels to Rocky Top to face Tennessee, a team that the Lady Bisons have never played, on Dec. 29. “It is always great to play the Kentucky’s and the Tennessee’s. They are great models of excellence and where we are working to get to,” Brown said. The team start their conference play in Johnson City, Tenn., against ETSU on Jan. 2.
